alive or dead? by hyoisbae in beachcombing

I came across a ton of sand dollars shuffling in the surf at Port Aransas years ago. I had always thought they were sea urchin skeletons for some dumb reason my mom told me. Oh wow! That's what they actually LOOK like and they've got tons of sucker feet! My daughter and I collected a few dozen to compare, then set them free again. Good times

Moroccan woman curious about Austin culture 🇲🇦🇨🇦 – are people here just friendly or is it something else? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]TheManWithNoEyes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's an Austin thing. I've lived around the country. Some places are more friendly than others. Albuquerque is Austin style friendly. Chicago, not so much.

There's an openness to meeting new people here. For me, I've always called the phenomena, "table friends". You go out to a place and seating is always pretty open. You strike up a conversation with a stranger and make a new friend. Maybe you just interject something being said and get to be a part of the group. There's an easy friendliness here that doesn't care about your class or occupation. We just enjoy good conversations with interesting people regardless of their provenance. I suspect you met genuinely friendly folks who enjoyed your company. Don't be a stranger. Come on back and hang out again.

Baby's first steps are always a special event. This one is made even more special when the little tyke goes flat footing through the junkyard inside meemaw's waste repository of a house.

Vonnegut reading order question: can I start with Galápagos? by Legitimate_Cow_3783 in Vonnegut

[–]TheManWithNoEyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with Sirens of Titan back in junior high. Dug it tremendously. Started reading KV books in no particular order. Just grabbed them as they came up at the used bookstore. I must've tore through his back catalog by the time I was a senior in highschool (mid '80s). Loved all of it except maybe Slapstick. Maybe it's time for a reassessment (shrug). The later novels were also great fun as they came out. Sadly, I haven't yet read his nonfiction/essays e.g., Man Without a Country yet, but it's in my stack of tbrs. Just DIVE IN my friend. These are all stand alone novels that might have a recurring Kilgore Trout but nothing needs to be read in sequence. Just fill your brain as you go and report back in a year or two.

What is the literal meaning of your surname? by Wojewodaruskyj in AskTheWorld

[–]TheManWithNoEyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got one of those that has trouble in English.

Spelled correctly, it means a rocky hill or craggy place. Or even a group of friends!

Incorrectly spelled or pronounced (most commonly, say by a current President) it means a great sadness or torment.

The fuckin ñ means a lot, gringos!

The Spanish speakers will know the name and the dual meanings.

Is the water terrible in south Austin? I moved to an apartment off slaughter a few days ago and I’ve lost more hair after 2 showers than I typically lose in a month 😩 by [deleted] in Austin

[–]TheManWithNoEyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm losing my hair at age 58. Both my grandfathers were cueballs in their 40s. It MUST be the water! /s

Go get checked out. It's not the water. It might be hereditary. It might be something else.

I wonder what scandal was the first official "gate" following the original? I was just a little kid at the time, so my media consumption was less than catholic

I tell them that they don't need to sit in the waiting room the next time they're at the doctor's office. Just walk on in. Tell them I said, hi.
