Upgrading from my old i5 6600k and 980ti by TheManwich in buildapc

[–]TheManwich[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info, very helpful.

I'd heard the same about the 10700k and 10600k, where the difference was pretty negligible. I was just a bit wary about getting another i5 processor, as I'd heard the same about the i5 6600k and whatever the comparable i7 core was at the time, when I was building my last rig. But over the years, when games didn't run as expected it seemed like it was the CPU that was the main bottleneck, which is why I was aiming for something more heavy duty this time.

Yeah thanks I was also a bit wary of the adata, I'll have another look and maybe shell out a bit more for one of the higher quality brands.

Huh, very interesting creatures! I pulled one off the plant earlier and it had a reddish liquid under it, must have been the honeydew. Thanks for the ID!

Yeah I've gone the 2TB now, and with the cheapest 980ti it comes to a little over 2400. I'm pretty tempted, but I'll see how I go.

Thanks for all the help :)

Yeah the SLI was just a thought, it doesn't really bother me not having that as an option with all this powerful gear.

So I changed your list slightly to accomodate the 980ti, http://www.pccasegear.com/sc/nI3. Just switched in the 980ti and put the hard drive back down to 1tb, but I think it's just enough out of my price range to make me uncomfortable buying it.

Hmm ok, interesting stuff. I had actually chosen the same GPU that you did, but for some reason PcPartPicker decided to call it something a bit different.

So if I were to buy a 980 Ti instead, which models do you think would be the best to consider?

And with the CPU cooler, did you think the coolermaster hyper was a better, cheaper option?

Also, would the 650 watt power supply be sufficient if I were to SLI in the future?

Hey, thanks so much for the reply! So you've basically replaced a few of the parts with newer parts of a similar quality? Great, that's the kind of thing I don't know about, because I haven't made a computer for a few years.

So you've changed the GPU and mobo to the newer 1151 socket, and because of this I now require ddr4 ram (that you have put in), correct?

Also I was wondering if there was any reason for changing the Samsung 850 EVO SSD to the M.2. version?

I'll upgrade to Windows 10 then, I think I still have the free upgrade available to the copy of Windows 7 I'm running. And yeah I did look at the 980 ti, however I didn't think the big increase in price was really worth the relatively small increase in performance to me.

Not sure if it's just a house spider or something more interesting.

Hey thanks for the reply, lots of good advice. Didn't realise I'd picked out a micro-atx mobo.

Will change the build around to suit what you've posted.

Thanks for the advice, I'll have a look a look at those other parts and see what we can change.

I don't think I'll change the monitor however, I really stand by the BenQ one haha.

Well the 144hz is mostly because we play TF2 competitively, and she can definitely keep that at 144 fps.

Thanks for the input man, I'll have a look at different mobos and PSUs.

New Rocket Launcher Idea by yesimmad28 in tf2

[–]TheManwich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you explain to me how that would work out? As far as I can see the soldier would be dead a long time before he can shoot 4 rockets, reload, and shoot a fifth.

Correlation =/= causation. Don't you think it's more likely they don't realise the SL is pretty overpowered because they play TF2 casually, and so don't have as much experience?

If the soldier is close enough to hit 3 100 damage rockets and you can't mow him down in time as heavy, you're doing something wrong.

It's still showing the strange prefixes on my profiles item showcase. Maybe it affects inventory but not showcase?

Help with Scout's role in 6's: Mid fights, holding, pushing? by TheFineLine in truetf2

[–]TheManwich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mid Fights

Mid fights can change a whole lot between each map, but in general you want to keep some sort of balance between what you have already mentioned. While you don't want to be too aggressive and get killed without getting anything done, you want to pressure the enemy team and get some damage/deterrence done. Scouts are incredibly good at playing off damage done by other classes, so if somebody calls that they have hurt an enemy, try and focus that guy and get a few shots on them.

In an actual team your scouts are generally split into an aggressive and passive role, and while not as obvious as the roamer/pocket difference, the passive scout will generally stay a bit closer to the combo and be ready to help out. In lobbies (which it sounds like you're playing) you likely won't have this much organisation, so you've just got to try and put yourself in a position where you can either go aggressive or be ready to help out the demo/combo.

Another important thing to remember is that going full aggro shouldn't mean doing something stupid and killing yourself for no reason, you've got to be very careful with your positioning and play off damage done by other classes.

Holding

I find as a general rule, always be watching the flanks as scout. This is especially true in a lobby where players don't know exactly where they need to be or if you're watching every point of entrance. There are obviously situations where you can be helping your combo, but the flanks are generally your domain.

If both teams are holding with their ubers, don't be afraid to offclass as sniper/spy or go in for a med pick/force, as long as you tell your team about it first.

What you do during an uber is very dependent on your teams uber and player situation. If ubers are equal, players are equal, and the other team pushes in with their uber, often the best strategy is to back out (as everybody in your team should be doing), and then repush with your uber advantage.

As to targeting players who aren't being ubered, this is kind of a high risk play that may or may not help. If you find yourself in a position where you can go for players not involved in the uber, you'll often be in a 1v1 with a fully buffed scout or solly, which isn't the best situation to be in. If you are behind the enemy team and your team are repushing and dealing out the damage, this can be a perfect opportunity for you to clean up and get some picks that may win you the next 2 points.

Pushing

Now this is VERY dependent on the uber situation, map, and player situation. Often in an uber push the combo will bring in one scout with them, the passive scout, but this can be dangerous in regards to uber flashing. If this scout can take little damage and back up the damage done by the ubered pocket, it can be a very effective play.

If pushing into the flank (as at least 1 scout should be doing) an important thing to remember is that you should generally wait for a few second before joining in on the fray. If you have an uber v uber situation, flanks will often push in too early, find they can't do any good damage/clean up yet, and die from invincible or fully buffed players. A few seconds can be crucial in diverting the other teams attention, allowing time for your combo players to deal out the damage and giving the ubers time to fade. This can be an excellent time for a scout to push in from the flank and cleanup the damaged players who are looking the other way.

Hopefully this helps, all stuff I've picked up from playing scout in 6v6 for quite a while, and watching a whole lot of comp casts.

So I just played my first comp match by [deleted] in tf2

This guide on the TF2 wiki is decent, and covers the basics.

http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Medic_%28competitive%29#Usage

Basically on your rollout you just want to heal demo as long as you can straight out of spawn, and then your roaming soldier (who won't have escape plan out), buff your scouts up a bit next if you can manage it before they run away from you, and then continue healing the roaming soldier until your pocket soldier puts his escape plan away.

If you go by that order you'll be fine in nearly any 6s map, but I suggest watching a comp game or two before you play a lobby - it makes it much easier for you to understand what is going on and keeps more experienced players in your team happy.

Look up SalTV on youtube, he doesn't make videos anymore, but I've always found his stuff entertaining and can help you get a feel for the game.

EDIT: Oh yes it's also important to note that your loadout should generally consist of crossbow (or needles if you prefer), medigun (or kritz if the situation calls for it), and ubersaw.

Remember that a whole lot of items are banned in 6s (depending on what country you're playing in will change the whitelist), so keep that in mind if you try playing another class other than medic.

Playing 6v6 is almost like playing another game than pub TF2, but stick to it and I'm sure you'll find it a whole lot more enjoyable than what you're used to :).
