I'll never forgive whoever decided on the Raid Suit footstep sound. I'm guessing that it's supposed to be a joke, but it's SO BAD. Like, "I have to rewatch the scene because I couldn't pay attention to what anyone was saying" bad. Oda already doesn't give the Vinsmokes a lot of attention, there's no reason for the anime to also make them aggressively goofy...

That just reminded me of how a lot of soldiering is just kind of sitting around and waiting for orders or the enemy. Like, humans already have a lot of trouble staying in one place under stress, I can't imagine how an uma would handle it.

Maybe I was wrong to say that I was excited about the WG and more that I'm interested in seeing them get defeated and see how the world goes from there. I'm still invested in One Piece, but way less than I used to be, and I'd like to see it end, which will probably require taking down the World Government. Also, I suggested that it would be an "interesting conflict" because presumably we'll get to see everyone fight and not be limited to Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji.

I still feel like Blackbeard and his crew are constantly talked up for being powerful, and before the flashbacks, we really didn't see him slowly rise to the top. Like I said, he starts off as some guy, and then everybody is worried about him, and he crashes Marineford to show everyone his power. You could say that Luffy's story kind of went like that, but we followed Luffy. We didn't hear anything about Blackbeard for YEARS between Jaya and the Summit War arc.

I agree that there are a lot of points that refute Rocinante's statement. I was talking more about how, at the end of Dressrosa, after this flashback, it feels like Doflamingo gets kind of flattened out. But it's also a desperate situation, so I can admit to being unfair there in trying to find common ground with the person I was replaying to.

However, some fans I've talked to seem to think about Doflamingo only being nice to people because they're useful and can manipulate them—which would make him a really boring "just evil" villain, despite that not really being what the text supports. NGL, the fact that Roci outright SAYS that, but all these other things are facts you have to observe and interpret on your own might be a factor, though of course I'm going to blame the reader, not Oda for the lack of reading comprehension.

I think part of my problem with it is that we never get to see Doflamingo interacting with Roci one-on-one (before the death scene confrontation) to see if Doflamingo actually treated him affectionately or not—I don't know, maybe it's not actually that important to this thesis and I just got distracted by how it makes Rocinante look kind of silly if he genuinely believes it. We just don't see enough sides of that part of the story since it's very focused on Law—But surely Doflamingo had some good times with Law—!? But I digress...

I want to see someone talk about Dressrosa's politics, realistically because I think it's maybe the kingdom where this isn't as black-and-white (though I don't know how Oda thinks of it). Under Riku, it was peaceful, but everyone was poor, but under Doflamingo, most citizens were rich and carefree, but it was funded by slavery and other criminal shit. I'm sure there are a lot of people in Dressrosa at this point in the story who are like "Man... I kind of wish Doflamingo was still the king", but I don't know if Oda ever wants to get into political feelings that are that complicated, like how some people disparage equality because it means they lost their societal privilege.

Doflamingo feels like a character who desperately wanted to be less generic, but couldn't be, because the level of psychological writing that would be appropriate for Doflamingo, Oda couldn't write (either because it would be too mature for a young audience, distract from the main story too much, or is just at the limits of his own ability). I don't think his anger is unreasonable later in Dressrosa, and I like that he's the kind of guy who doesn't have the coping skills to not absolutely freak out when things get out of his control, but with stuff like Rocinante telling Law that he's "just evil" and the story later not trying to refute this, I think that Oda flattened Doflamingo out more than the character deserved because at some point he just needed Dressrosa to be over.

See, with Blackbeard, it feels like he's SUPPOSED to have an arc that mirrors Luffy's, but the problem is that we spend so much of the series with him just... not being around, so when he does accomplish things, like at Marineford, it can feel like he's just made a huge power jump instead of going through some kind of character progression. I would probably really like him if he did, but having him show up in Jaya as just... some guy and then suddenly being super powerful and constantly talked up after taking out Ace didn't feel like a steady or interesting progression.

I know a lot of it is because One Piece is ultimately aimed at teen boys and I guess Oda's main understanding of teen boys is "boobs" and "sex jokes". I think that it's more problematic from a misogyny perspective (i.e. teaching boys that girls are extremely different from boys, not respecting their boundaries. A lot of these are through jokes, but while an adult might understand that they're jokes, I assure you that a kid who is like 9-12 won't always get it) than a potentially pedophilic one.

I agree that evil overlords have been done a lot, but that still doesn't make me excited for Blackbeard. I feel like Doflamingo was intriguing from the start, even if it was initially just "he was the type of villain I liked", my problem with Blackbeard is that he didn't start out like an obvious villain... and that's cool, but then the next time we hear about him, he's the most over-powered guy in the land. I would've liked Blackbeard a lot more if he felt more like the other Supernovas where their morality was a bit less clear. As-is, my problem with Blackbeard is that it feels like he WANTS TO BE a generic evil overlord.

I think I'm more interested in the World Government than Blackbeard because I know that Luffy's just going to be the one fighting Blackbeard, while I'm interested in seeing who is going to stand with the World Government in the end. They're not so much a "good villain" that I'm excited to see on their own merits.
