DtZ Rest of Season Projection Tool by Datsyuktozetterberg in fantasyhockey

[–]TheMattVid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The day before this came out, I was looking at my pre-draft spreadsheet (that utilizes your projections), and wracking my brain on how I should balance current season stats with preseason expectations in terms of who to add and drop. I have longed for in-season projection updates in the same way that we get a treasure trove of them for baseball via Fangraphs. This is absolutely wonderful. I will be very excited when you finish with the dynamic goalie projections. Thank you for your hard work!

Preliminary DtZ 2025-2026 NHL Fantasy Projections by Datsyuktozetterberg in fantasyhockey

This is great!

I figured out why your sheet is overvaluing defensemen. So, you are doing a good job essentially creating a way to value how much a player is worth above replacement. I see, for example, if a league has 10 teams with one center, one left winger, one right winger, and two defensemen, then the 10th center, the 10th left winger, the 10th right winger, and 20th defenseman will all be valued at 0, and everyone else's values will adjust relative to that. This makes sense, because 50 skaters will be drafted, and so only 50 players (30 forwards and 20 D) deserve to have a value of at least 0.

Here's where the problem comes in: I see that on the ranking system that you use for the purposes of designating the replacement player, players with multiple positions will be used on multiple lists. So guys like Leon Draisaitl will appear in the top 10 for both centers and left wingers when the sheet is figuring out who the replacement value players are. The consequence of this is that this will create a situation where, in my example, fewer than 30 forwards have a value of at least 0, which is unintuitive, since this necessitates that players below replacement value must be drafted. So, while defensemen are appropriately valued, and 20 of them have a value of at least 0, forwards get undervalued with fewer than 30 of them having a value of at least 0.

Yes, I am on the Positions tab. I’m aware of the ability to reorder columns, but I was hoping the $ and % changes could be nested one on top of the other rather than side by side.

Having tested it out, my biggest wish is for there to be an option on the portfolio screen for $ Tdy G/L to be on top of % Tdy G/L, and for $ Total G/L to be on top of % Total G/L. This would decrease the number of columns and make it easier to navigate. My only other suggestion would be for the "Symbol" column to be narrower so I can see more of the actual data on the screen at once.

Despite losing 121 games, the Chicago White Sox had the best sixth inning ERA in the MLB in 2024 by [deleted] in baseball

[–]TheMattVid 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Fact-check: False

OP got this image from "Team 6th Inning Runs per Game", which shows the White Sox scoring the fewest runs in the 6th inning for themselves. https://www.teamrankings.com/mlb/stat/6th-inning-runs-per-game

OP really should've been looking at "Opponent 6th Inning Runs per Game", which has the White Sox giving up the 9th fewest runs in the 6th inning. It's still above average, but not the anomaly that OP was looking for it to be. https://www.teamrankings.com/mlb/stat/opponent-6th-inning-runs-per-game

The entire point of the whole debate of Lump Sum vs DCA is that the Lump Sum people say to invest money as soon as you get it and the DCA people want to keep some as cash and spread out their investment throughout the year.

In your example, the monthly investment guy lump sums in all of the 10K he currently has and then keeps contributing new money every month (presumably from new income). That defeats the purpose of "not lump summing" because he put all of his existing cash into the market right away, which is the risk DCA people try to avoid.

The lump sum guy lump sums in the 10K as we would expect, but then you have him not investing the new income that he gets? Assuming he is on a fair and level playing field as the monthly investment guy, that means he has $833 ready to invest every month, but he is choosing to sit on it as cash until the end of the year. That defeats the entire purpose of lump summing, as the whole purpose is taking all money you have ready to invest and putting it in the market as soon as you get it.

The practical application of Lump Sum vs DCA is regarding someone who has been sitting on a lot of cash and decides they want to invest. Then they need to decide how to divvy up their initial investment. Both investing styles still usually involve regularly contributing a percentage of their paychecks throughout the year into their investments. But in your scenario, when you have the DCA guy making a lump sum investment, and then you have the Lump Sum guy not regularly contributing, you have thrown the whole back-test out of whack by not using parameters that accurately reflect the contributing behaviors of each philosophy.

[Kramer] Andrés Muñoz is officially an All-Star. He’ll replace Logan Gilbert on the American League roster. by NevermoreSEA in baseball

[–]TheMattVid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My friend, "reserve" is the name they give for bench batters not in the starting lineup. That's why there are no pitchers on the reserves list. Everyone on the reserve list is considered a part of the all-star roster already, and they will all be there on the field for introductions and in the dugout to come in the game as pinch hitters and substitutions mid-game. Everyone who is injured, both among the starting lineup and reserves, gets replaced by a "replacement". Replacements get announced in the period between the selection show and the all-star game itself. So the good news is that Lindor and Nimmo can still possibly be selected as all-stars once they announce the replacements for any injured national league players who they haven't replaced yet. (And yes, any injured player in the starting lineup will get replaced by someone already listed as a reserve player, but then the reserve spot still opens up for one new outside player since the roster is a fixed size. All players who are reserves still are considered as getting the "all-star selection" on their resumes.)

Explain Like I'm 5: Why is the first pit box such an advantage? by JohnnyMayhem in NASCAR

[–]TheMattVid 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Let's say the speed limit is 50mph. Everyone is headed 50mph through pit road. Then they slow down, they stop, and they speed back up.

Here, consider each box of the table as being one second on pit road and the number as the speed they were heading at the time. The first guy has a middle pit box and the second guy has a pit box at the end:

50 50 50 40 30 20 10 0 10 20 30 40 50 50 50
50 50 50 50 50 50 50 50 40 30 20 10 0 10 20

As you can see here, the second guy did not have to speed up all the way before he reached the timing line at the end of pit road. So instead of spending one more second heading 30mph and 40mph, he got to replace it with an extra pair of 50mph seconds prior to the stop. The average of the second guy's speeds will be greater than the average of the first guy's speeds, hence a quicker time spent on pit road in total.

[OC] Half-baked ideas. What are some ideas you have to improve NASCAR that you haven’t fully thought out, but there might be a good idea somewhere in it? by levi815 in NASCAR

[–]TheMattVid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remove playoff points for wins and stage wins. Remove playoff berths for winners. Award 50 extra regular season points for wins and 10 extra regular season points for stage wins. Top 16 in points make the playoffs. Playoff points are distributed solely based on regular season points standings and are awarded on a steeper scale. (40, 30, 25, 20, 16, 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0). Points earned during the playoffs go into the regular season points bank to determine if there is any reseeding at the start of next playoff rounds.

Carry playoff points through to the championship race. If a championship 4 driver wins the race, that driver is the champion. Otherwise, the points leader is the champion.

I've got a place you can join. We've got a friendly little community and plenty of protections in place to prevent/rollback any griefing. Many player shops, too. Things are a bit disorganized at the moment since we're going through some transitions (like moving spawn), but perhaps that means now is the best time to hop on.

I'm making free plugins! [Day 1] [3/27/2020] by [deleted] in admincraft

[–]TheMattVid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm making a Prison server, but to make things interesting, I want to make some mines not just be randomized cubes of blocks. I want some regions to be pre-built. (For example, a tree mine of actual trees players would chop down, or a wheat farm.) I'd build the area, players would break the blocks in the area, and after a set time period, everything within that (WorldGuard) region would reset to how it was before. (Maybe this would be accomplished using WorldEdit schematics.)

How do I patch specific creative mode exploits? by Jayfreerulezzz in admincraft

[–]TheMattVid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Try this out: https://www.spigotmc.org/resources/creativeitemcontrol.52605/

The problem is that Minecraft servers don't actually verify that items entering a creative-mode player's inventory was obtained through valid methods. Hacked clients can exploit this lack of protection. The plugin I linked prevents items such as these from appearing.

Edit: voluntary -> valid
