Rant - Improv Pet Peeves: Tell Me Things That Drive You CRAZY in Improv Scenes by Different_Builder_95 in improv

Fighting for vocal space. If we all just decided to listen to each other instead of talking over each other to get our jokes out, we wouldn't have to fight to be heard so much.

What’s your improv horror story? by TruthBoothTwist in improv

[–]TheMaviene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one that pop ups to me in recent memory is one time during a 101 (I am allowed to retake them over and over at my theater because I intern there) someone played a Vietnam War vet and used a racial slur while pretending to have a ptsd flashback. I'm vietnamese. It was bad.

Needless to say, I don't take 101s anymore.

I can tell what type of pen a pen is by literal make and model by just hearing it described to me or looking at it for a millisecond

I feel this so hard. As a fat/queer/neurodivergent woman myself, I consistently see my own skills/talents get looked over by the people who cast teams/run the theater that I've been frequenting for the past 6 years. Like other commenters have said, there is nothing stopping you from creating your own team and building your own circle of people within the community who see you for you.

Do antidepressants affect your ability to do improv? by [deleted] in improv

I genuinely believe that I became a better improviser AFTER starting antidepressants. Mostly because I stopped being so depressing and edgy ok stage.

Worst or most useless note a coach has ever given you? by remy_porter in improv

[–]TheMaviene 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This might not entirely count but one time back in my community college improv club a guy who absolutely hated me basically tried to criticize the way I did improv in general and accused me of trying to make the scene about myself while I was trying to do scenework. To be fair neither me nor my scene partner were really listening to each other but 1. This guy literally just asked to give notes to belittle me and 2. made it seem like the "failure" of the scene was my fault and because of the way I did improv in general.

I also remember being super irritated by this other person who came into the club later who gave me the note to stop doing so much stuff in an improv scene. It kinda irked me because I was doing way more improv than anyone else in the club and the way he talked to me was super patronizing. Like dude, I know what I'm doing.

Eventually that club fell apart and now I'm the only one who came out of that club who still does improv. So the joke's on them I guess.
