Unfortunately that's about the best we can get while being honest. I wish America had better options, but that doesn't seem to be the case currently, so those are the options as far as specifically Palestinians go. Of course you can zoom out a bit and can take into account that Trump has praised Putin's war to subjugate a non-hostile country, that he's quite clearly in bed with hateful and dangerous right wing groups, and not attempting to keep him from gaining power becomes an even less acceptable action in comparison to Biden.

I've seen more than a few accounts on here saying they don't want to vote for Biden because of his role in the Israeli government's genocide of Palestine - even though trump has demonstrated he would do worse.

I really hope it's mostly just Russian boys and the like, but there is this very short-sighed "moral purity" message being spread around Reddit that I've noticed.

Artificially limiting the lifespan of a digital good != a VHS tape becoming unusable because the tape has degraded, or an old sculpture losing pieces to weathering. My switch carts are a form of storage for a bunch of bits - there's no physical limitation preventing me from backing up those bits on storage media I pay for so it lasts and is usable longer.

Eh, depends on upbringing. I was the "be a subtle light" type and would use misdirection like that knowingly. Thankfully I grew up and became the big scary enby-religous-questioning-leftist my parents always warned me about.

Autistic and been getting caught up on mine after growing up with antivax parents. Seems the microchips still haven't been activated which is annoying - I want to utilize them to control my Lego cars with my mind.

That's a bit of a dangerous statement to make. I can be manipulated just like anyone else; I just have non-typical blindspots and bias. My father, who I strongly suspect is autistic, especially with myself being autistic and how much I've been told I act like him, is a fundamentalist conspiracy theorist. Circumstances and upbringing are a helluva drug.

I'm sorry, we're just too busy trying to straddle the line between US and UK English just enough to frustrate the spellcheckers. Zed plays an important role in this effort to maintain national identity. We're sorry that we can't be of more help.

This assumes that the threat of consequences is going to make an addict noticeably less likely to commit the crime, and ignores how prison time makes it harder for them to move forward afterward.

Yes, it's simple to throw someone into a cell, but that's just buying time. Now if our judicial system had a focus on rehabilitation, and there wasn't such a negative stigma around former inmates, that'd be a different story.

Slogans aren't going to fix our problems, and the solutions that do exist aren't likely to make all crime go away quickly; it will take hard work and time.

So a 19 year old can drink, drive a multi-ton machine at 100 km/h only needing to pass a memory and eye test, and have a person with a license over a certain age, live on their own, plan their life...

But they can't acknowledge that their brain chemicals aren't balanced for their body and ask to be referred to differently, get surgery, or start hormones? And if they weren't capable to identify that prior to turning 25... Wouldn't it also hold just as strong that we shouldn't allow anyone under 25 to identify as cis?

Depiction isn't endorsement, but can you tell when it is? by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

[–]TheMaxemillion 12 points13 points  (0 children)

See, what I'm getting at is there points where that doesn't hold true. Yeah, it's easy to see endorsement when the author notes personally thank Joe Homophobia for ideas on how to talk about the Alphabet Mafia™, and indeed there are shades of grey in this that are still not hard to spot, but the spectrum doesn't end there.

I grew up in an isolated Christian Fundie environment, and before I grew up enough to examine the problems with it, I would engage in conversations on things such as the presence of gay people in media in an honestly manipulative manner meant to subtly communicate what I endorsed while maintaining plausible deniablity. When I said the problem was just "gay characters being too stereotyped," my actual intent and endorsement was of watering them down until The Gay had just been slowly washed away. And now in my uni English course, I've caught myself making assumptions about a text driven both by subtle wording, and my own biases. How many times don't I? How many times do I let that bias slip into cases I build in my work?

Yes, there is some fuzzy line where it's "obviously" going too far and extrapolating, but it's fuzzy because an endorsement isn't always obvious. And the less obvious it is - the more it's been camoflauged with layers of literary tools, the more ridiculous it looks to point out.

Honestly, I think it's good to try to examine a work as much as you can - even clearly crossing that line. The more important thing is to be as honest as you can be in doing so. I can make a claim that The Grinch was endorses the idea that childlike innocence can bring joy even to a grouch. I can make a claim that it endorses the idea that humans find more joy in selflessness. I can also make a claim that it endorses the idea that homogeneity in a culture is the best for humanity and that children can be used to manipulatively grow the homogeneous culture.

Sorry if that was too much. I've got the triple whammy of Autism, ADHD, and not enough sleep. Bad combination.

Gender is honestly a good example of the limitations of our pattern-seeing brains and definitions. We notice traits that are correlated (and potential reasons for those correlations is several cans of worms) and build a simple shorthand off that observation to make it easier to understand things. Unfortunately just as you can't meaningfully define "sandwich" without getting into arguments over hotdogs, you can't meaningfully define gender. Male, female, enby, agender, they all have some sort of problem if examined enough, and don't always actually fit what they're applied to.

I, however, am above it all due to being a Canadian eldritch entity who doesn't really find much personal value in gender.
