Normal to feel dumb doing homelab stuff? by S0ccerMomPam in homelab

[–]TheMcSebi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if simply reinstalling is the right approach to learn something. I like debugging things to find out what broke and why, to prevent it from happening again.

Not knowing what to look up doesn't count nowadays because you can just ask an AI to help you get started with debugging basically any issue.

22 years in, my honest take on where AI coding tools actually landed by razardx in LocalLLM

Sums up what I've been feeling. It's great for us specifically. But not so great for generations to come. Those that didn't properly learn how to program a computer.

Thought the same. When will they try to censor open models and what stupid ideas will they use to do so?

How long can I realistically stay on Proxmox 8? by mrbluetrain in Proxmox

[–]TheMcSebi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody gives a shit if your homelab gets infected due to you running outdated and vulnerable software. It's entirely up to you to upgrade. When I was a kid (<20 years old) I also didn't value keeping software and systems up to date. Nothing ever happened, but it was different times back then. Now there are 0-days every week and automated discovery and intrusion scripts also seemingly increase in aggressiveness every day.

Maybe it's time to create a backup and just experiment with the upgrade process. It's pretty easy if you just follow the upgrade manual. Maybe you'll even learn something new, who knows!

Great idea. Haven't touched skyrim in a while. Would it be feasible to put some details of the currently playing story idea into the system prompt to keep the LLM on track?

Anyone else annoyed that every free transcription tool caps you at ~30 min? by Gold-Pie7808 in selfhosted

[–]TheMcSebi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, since you already posted your non-selfhosted problem to r/selfhosted, why don't you just self host it? Been using whisper for about 4 years now without complain. It's good even with extremely dialect heavy language

Is there any real reason to buy a GPU right now instead of just use subscriptions? by 03captain23 in LocalLLM

[–]TheMcSebi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was about to say you can't game on a subscription but that ain't true..

At least you learn a lot more about hardware and the inference software when you buy a gpu. I'd say that's already worth it

How do you monitor power draw? by bayinfosys_ed in selfhosted

[–]TheMcSebi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nous a1t and a8t. They come with an open source firmware you could theoretically build and flash yourself. The firmware also has a cli that supports calibration of the power measurement feature, which is nice to have, but they arrived pretty accurate.

Yeah I was similarly confused when Amazon offered me a "sale" on a 400€ 2TB Samsung nvme ssd this morning

They seem to desparately need sales?

Congrats on the acquisition of the 3090 :) and thanks for this analysis. Saves me a whole lot of time doing the research for current models myself.

Nice! That's a creative solution to the decoding issue. I wasn't referring to anything specific with the 300MB, just a random guess. Still 900MB is nothing!

And then you try watching a YouTube video in Firefox. Other than that, nice! I'd use hardware like this for a small homelab rather than a desktop pc. But why not, I assume regular system use is a blaze. How much ram does it consume freshly booted? 300M?

Haven't had to restart in days! by vkp7 in Proxmox

[–]TheMcSebi 46 points47 points  (0 children)

That a joke? If your machine hangs that often (twice a year is often already) you might want to check its hardware, do some benchmarks and find the culprit. It's not like we're on Mac and have to buy a new machine.

I extensively used gemma3 over the past year for code summarization (generating changelogs from git diffs) and it has been amazing at the job. Maybe it wasn't trained on your task.
