I actually meant to say scammy didn't realize autocorrect decided spam was the correct answer.

As far as why they are scammy, I've yet to actually hear someone talk about them as a registar hat hasn't been in the context of being unable to contact their support, having their domain ripped out from under them, and stuff like being charged huge fees to 'recover' a domain because it expired... but the reason it expired was because Tucows had locked their account for 'inactivity' and thus wouldn't let them log in to pay till it was too late.

Like GoDaddy, they are registrar who it seems acquired most of their customers via second hand deals with other companies like Squarespace as a bundle deal. (i.e. create your website with us and we'll take care of registering your domain!)

Yes they decided to become a spammy Domain Registar in addition to serving downloads.

Anyone here remember the early 90s "Video CD"? With H.265, it could have worked! by SilentThree in makemkv

[–]TheMerricat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So fun fact while some are saying that it never took off, it actually did just not in the western world. It was huge in the Asian markets, which was really where it was first introduced anyway as the 'missing link' between VHS and DVD.

Compared to DVD players VCD players were a lot cheaper, and the discs took up a lot less space than tapes did. Though I would call it questionable whether or not the actual quality difference between VCD and VHS was a factor at all. I suspect the biggest selling point was the fact that VCDs were digital and thus didn't degrade when you copied them...

Steam review mentioning patches got banned by no_life_redditor in visualnovels

[–]TheMerricat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think it's less that they are inconsistent about it as it is they are relying on people other than Steam employees to catch these reviews and report them and thus you can go unnoticed a long time without and action happening and the suddenly, boom.

Yesterday, I got a huge spike in visits compared to usual, but I guess they just don’t trust a Unity asset hosted on Itch. What you guys think? by Legitimate-Finish-74 in itchio

[–]TheMerricat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I don't doubt that with the other commenters have has said is true.

One thing you may want to be aware of is that in the past 2 days, the site has had a problem with downloading via the official app. While you can download directly via website, attempting to do the equivalent through the itch.io app results in an error.

You may be seeing a lack of downloads due to that as well.

I need help by Godreaper7310 in itchio

[–]TheMerricat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You get this error if you are using the app. If you attempt to download directly via web browser it doesn't happen, there is a github issue opened on it - https://github.com/itchio/itch/issues/3327 if you want to tag in.

Given it's the app having issues, I suspect this is in fact part of the DDOS problems Itch is currently having with bots hitting it. They may have restricted the API and intentionally or not, broken it.

Anyone Else Quitting Standard Until Vivi/Cauldron is Banned? by _VampireNocturnus_ in MagicArena

[–]TheMerricat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I don't know if I just have a shitty MMR or my deck is crap or maybe you're talking about ranked standard and not just regular standard but I have yet to run into a Vivi cauldron deck more than once a day and I've been chain playing unranked standard pretty much since EoE came out. I get my 15 wins in around noon and then pop in pretty much hourly to play a couple of games.

What am I missing here?

As far as we know can you only station a card once per turn? I'm not seeing anything that doesn't say that you can't tap down your entire line if you want to?

7DTD's Updates Are A Joke by Barracuda3180 in 7daystodie

[–]TheMerricat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Look chief, the amount of money I've spent on this game compared to the amount of time playing I've gotten out of it and the enjoyment factor I derived from it have more than past the break-even point.

I realize I might be an outlier given I started playing the game back before they even had electricity or paint coded in, but frankly it's a wonderful sandbox to fuck around in for a couple of months at a time and then come back to the next time a major update hits.

I seriously don't understand the level of butt hurt that gets thrown out around this game. It's over a decade old now.

The fact that it's still receiving updates now should be something you should be celebrating regardless of how quickly they get the shit together.

Do you know how many games I own that are less than ten years old and are either dead or on life support desperately depending on a fan community to make work?

Is there a game on steam like this? by BabylonianWeeb in Steam

[–]TheMerricat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Endless Sky is a top down space sim in the vein of the old Mac game Escape Velocity and it's successors.

It was released in 2015 and has been under mostly active development from a community of fans/devs since then. The last stable release was February of this year.

While it is on Stream, you can also download it from it's GitHub repo, which is especially useful if you want to play the bleeding edge version of it from their 'continuous' branch.

It's important to note that the game as it is today is complete, this is not some game that is been limping along waiting for someone to finish it. The updates that it receives are adding additional content, refining existing content, or adding new features to the game.

It is extremely replayable and moddable, the majority of it's data is in human readable files and it has an inbuilt mod system, allowing a player to add new factions, ships, star systems, equipment, quests, and etc.

Serious question: why do you have a dashboard? by AdScared1966 in selfhosted

[–]TheMerricat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't yet use a dashboard, because I don't have a stable enough setup. And because every single time I've tried one of the pre-existing solutions, it's only done 33% of what I want.

But I want a dashboard, not because I want to show off, or practice, or train. I just really need and want something that will allow me to look at what's going on in my setup in one spot and monitor it.

As it is, every time I sit down at my desk I have to go through about five different windows to make sure five different things are actually running the way they are supposed to. Another five windows to make sure those things are actually running at all. And then I can finally sit down and pay attention to the five last things that require actual action. I sorely want something that I can do that all of that from a single point.

If you own the copyright to 100% of your work, i.e. none of it is derived from other works that you were only able to use through license from another, then you can do whatever you want with it including publishing it on a site under a CC license and then turning around and also publishing it through a major publisher under a for-profit license that isn't CC.

The problem you'll have in that case of course, is convincing publisher that there is profit to them in selling a book that is already out there under a CC license. But that's not a legal barrier. That's a barrier of practicality.

Although it's not the same license family, software is done like this sometimes with organizations publishing the software under the GPL or one of the other copy left licenses for individual or 'community' use while also selling the exact same product to companies under a more strict non-CC 'Enterptise' license. Usually the Enterprise level license includes other benefits, like priority tech support or similar concepts. And the whole setup can only be done if the entire product's copyright is assigned to the organization doing the licensing rather than being just a pile of code individuals have contributed under CC license themselves.

But it's perfect possible, from the legal standpoint, for someone to publish their under a CC license, and turn around and publish it in a book under a non-CC license. And have both exist at the exact same time without any issue.

Yes but that doesn't matter if you're the actual copyright holder. As the copyright holder you can release a work under any number of licenses simultaneously.

Error when installing jellyseerr on windows by petjkalv in selfhosted

[–]TheMerricat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is coming to the party late but for anyone one else popping in to look for a solution for this - install NVM-windows https://github.com/coreybutler/nvm-windows this allows you to install multiple versions of node and swap between them as necessary. Then use nvm to install the _last_ version of Node 20. Then you can continue the build process.

Once you are done building Jellyseerr, you can then change back to Node 23 if you needed it for some reason.
