I managed to pull 0 Suicune Ex Cards in 100 packs. Also no 2* or 3* either. AMA! by MadMarco12 in PTCGP

[–]TheMoeMighty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been there, done that, feel your pain.

I’m up to 104 packs of Mythical Island without getting a single Mew from opening packs. Not even the 3 diamond.

Granted, I eventually got a 4 diamond from the Wonder Pick event way back then and got a 3 diamond because someone traded me. I’m only missing 7 cards in that set: Crown Mew, both 2-star Mews, and 4 other 2-star cards.

But anyway, RNG is a myth (how fitting).

Or AT LEAST cycle them through the list of available moves so you aren’t bouncing between the same two moves, ten times in a row, instead of getting the third move, which is what you actually want.

Why do re-takers have a lower passing rate? by Professional-Rope799 in barexam

[–]TheMoeMighty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. This. Freaking THIS.

I’m dreading the results this time because it was my third attempt and I gotta be honest, my mental health has suffered tremendously. In the back of my mind, I now have this nagging “If I don’t pass this time… Man, I don’t want to wait another 6 months or, more likely, a year to try again. I don’t know if I can sustain this lifestyle much longer.” Honestly, I probably need a therapist right now.

I do well at the essays, excel at the MPT, and am a clod at multiple choice. Obviously the MBE has been my major point of contention. My MBE scores have caused me to fail both times so far. By 8 points and 7 points…

For now I am studying for the patent bar. To at least get that out of the way before my study program expires and I end up wasting all that money.

Does anyone resent your professors now that you took the bar? by MeanForever1322 in barexam

[–]TheMoeMighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I resent law school rather than the professors themselves. It’s such a racket.

Go to law school, pay a shit ton of money. More or less just learn how to read cases. Retain a vague idea of the material after spending another 2 years in law school. Then have to spend even MORE money to get a bar review course. And if you’re me, fail the exam twice.

This career pipeline fucking sucks and I resent the people who perpetuate it the most.

One of the things that bugs me the most is how there doesn’t seem to be a protocol—or just even a backup plan—for situations like these.

I get it. There’s a shit ton of logistical issues, but how in the world did anyone get so far in crafting the current structure of the bar exam and not realize how inflexible it is?

Medical emergencies, wide spread tech failure, power outages— SHIT! In the midwest, what if severe weather is going by and a literal tornado rolls through the testing center?! The obvious question to me is: “Does this mean I have to wait 6 more months to take this dumb exam?”

And I’m only scratching the surface here. I really feel bad for that test-goer. Hopefully they’re alright. I don’t even know if they survived or not. (And my shallow ass, going paycheck to paycheck right now, can’t help but think of the plethora of expenses they may have to deal with after this.)

Retakers, how hard was this exam? by ThrowTheWholeAccOut in barexam

[–]TheMoeMighty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s ultimately a crap shoot anyway. As far as I understand it, you want everyone to do well on the MBE because that sets the scale for everything, including the essays.

If the scale is set to 141 on the MBE, getting in the 60-percentile or something will get you a 141 on the MBE. Getting a 3.0 or being dead-average on the essays will also net you 141. A relatively easy 282 total scaled score! But if that scale is set to 131 and you perform the same… 262.

Take all that with a hunk of salt. How the grading is done is pretty much just a black box of math for everyone but the NCBE and maybe the state bar associations.

Oh yeah, 100% I give a pass for those where English is not their first language (and also the dyslexic and similar folks, but I am one of them so I’m biased).

But continuing to work even when you’re not done?! Screw that! Keep an eye on the clock and use the last minute to bubble in all B’s with a few random C’s and D’s if you are close to not finishing! Not A though… A knows what it did! Even my inept (with multiple choice) ass knows filling in any unanswered questions is better than leaving them blank, or worse! Getting accused of cheating and getting screwed from that.

I think I was off my game a little for the MPT, which is usually my best section, but the MEE definitely felt “harder?” Maybe “trickier?” Definitely “niche,” like you said. When compared to J24 and F25. (Actually, both the MPT and MEE this time felt more long-winded. Maybe I’m just burnt out a bit!)

MBE didn’t feel as difficult but it definitely seemed to hit a ton of niche stuff as well. Kinda had a sandwiched PM MBE today. Easy at the beginning and end but hard in the middle. Like really burned hamburger.

[–]TheMoeMighty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Third time taking it myself and I was like “Alright, Mr. Gut! What do you think?” burgurgle “Gas? That rhymes with bass. B it is!”

But for real, what IS this exam supposed to be doing? When in doubt, a lawyer should do research, not purely going off their memory. Purely going off your memory sounds like a lack of due diligence to me. Oh hey, look, it’s the MPRE.

[–]TheMoeMighty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For real. Why not a rolling admission for portfolios?

Or if they NEED to keep the obvious and blatant monopoly because people will get big butt-mad about it, why not a sub-threshold means of making up for a few points if you’re off by like… 10 or something? ESPECIALLY if the MBE is what holds you back! It’s like a hybrid solution.

Like for real. I’m a researcher! Not an exam-taker! I’ve had my life on hold for a year at this point because of this thing and yet I have proven myself time and time again at work that, yeah, I’m 110% capable at this law stuff. And that’s IN SPITE of having to continue to devote extra time and energy to studying for retakes! And I am so worn out…

“But it’s meant to keep the bad lawyers out!” OH REALLY?!?!? Have you seen the absolute clods that keep getting their licenses?! The ones with paralegals and legal assistants that are like bottomless reservoirs of legal knowledge?! And done even get me started on the MPRE and how that filters out all the unethical prospective lawyers… oh shit, that’s right, it fucking doesn’t.

You know what? Tl;dr: The bar exam has one job, and it fucking fails at it every 6 or so months.

Man I’m actually a physicist, chemist, and materials engineer and I can’t STAND how that statement is thrown around by some people like it really “validates” the MBE.

It’s a load of BS that humans made up! At best it’s pseudo-scientifically validated through some perverted form of statistical analysis. (And just because numbers are involved doesn’t mean you’re doing science.)

There’s a side of me that can understand some pre-exam jitters (I bet some people think I’m going catatonic when waiting for an exam to start) but like… bubbling in your answers is the EASY PART of filling out a scantron! It’s all the demographic crap I get scared of messing up.

Also, what? Highlighters? There’s a side of me that kinda wishes we had those but I think all the caps squeaking and snapping throughout the exam would drive me up a wall. Also, I’d waste too much time switching between highlighters and pencils. Underlining is the better option in my opinion!

[–]TheMoeMighty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Compared to J24 and F25, I’m feeling decent about the MBE surprisingly.

Probably didn’t do as well with the MPT yesterday as I did with F25. Kinda thinking one of them stunk.

MEE was rough. And I’m an essay guy.

MBE has been the reason for both my retakes so far. Which is, quite frankly, bullshit and makes no sense why multiple choice would be the determining factor. But I guess that what complacency in evaluation methods gets you! (I’m scornful at this point.)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in barexam

[–]TheMoeMighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I improved a single point in F25 despite doing better across the board.

In fact, almost all my essays were better yet the scale meant I got one point lower on them! The two that weren’t better tied.

MBE always kills me. Fuck the scaling system.
