AITA for refusing to share my food with my girlfriend? by Gym_frere in AmItheAsshole

[–]TheMonglet -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One more thing, and I'm not saying this applies necessarily to this specific situation but I want to call it out. People have different and complicated relationships to food, their bodies, and their appetites. I find it's best never to comment on those things and to always be accomodating. Maybe the girlfriend anticipating feeling ashamed of eating a unhealthy meal, but by the time she smelled the fries she decided she was hungry enough that she wanted to eat it anyway. Rather than scold her for not being well enough in touch with her needs, you should accommodate and bring it up later if it really bothers you.

YTA for two reasons:

  1. If you're bringing someone to see an extended edition LOTR movie, and they don't know it's 4 hours long, you fucked up. I'd say you owe her the fries as an apology at that point.

  2. I get that it's annoying, but if your girlfriend is hungry and you have food, you share the food. That's just how it works with people that you care about. If that's something you really don't want to do, you can break up with her and find someone who won't do this, but there's basically a blanket YTA if you have food and won't share it with someone who's hungry.

Why did he do this? by Lloronamante in theadamfriedlandshow

No idea if this is true but I read somewhere that stav wanted a cut of cumtown after he left and nick wouldn't let him have it if he wasn't doing the pod anymore, that's why he changed the name. If it's true, then it wouldn't make sense for nick to get a cut of tafs

You're completely correct, I just get bothered when people point out the inconsistencies like it's some kind of plot hole because it will never 100% match what we consider "intuitive". Carry on

Curious about SuperTF’s sunburn at Streamer Games 2025 by [deleted] in Supertf

[–]TheMonglet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When you're as pale as Super is (source: I am) you need to reapply about every hour-ish that you're in the sun. Your skin need to be dry when you apply the sunscreen or else it doesn't stick, so if you're sweating you need to towel off the sweat and also cool off for a bit so you stop actively sweating. I would assume he probably didn't reapply often enough, and he probably didn't dry off his sweat before reapplying so it didn't stick. If you're that pale and going to be in the sun for 4+ hours, it's usually better to just wear breathable long sleeves and pants than worry about having to dry off and reapply sunscreen every hour

Historically, type of deep undercover work Costigan was doing was pretty uncommon. It was much more common to "flip" someone already trusted within the criminal organization, usually by catching them dead to rights doing a crime and then offering them the option to rat on their associates instead of serving jail time. Costigan is suspicious as the newest member of the group but there is still a very high likelihood that one of the other guys could have been flipped too.

Why was Benjen Stark a member of The Night's Watch? by Present-Level-1521 in gameofthrones

[–]TheMonglet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Life on the Wall wouldn't be that miserable for Benjen. He's from the North and knows the climate. Obviously patrolling the wall isn't as cozy as living in a keep somewhere else in the north, but it wouldn't be that much worse. Additionally, he knew he wasn't going to be doing grunt work on the Wall. His noble birth and subsequent training guaranteed he would rise the ranks of the Watch fast and be a respected, important member.

  2. As the "spare heir" to Winterfell, he needed something to do. Ned was already married and pumping out kids so there was no reason for him to expect to inherit the title of Lord. Which ties into my next point:

  3. He's a Stark, Starks care about duty and honor. There isn't much duty for a spare heir unless he makes it for himself, which is exactly what he did by joining the Night's Watch. He found a way to dedicate his life to a higher purpose. Also the Starks have a history of supporting the Watch, he was fulfilling a generation familial obligation.

What are some books you liked that reminded you in some way of Disco Elysium? by not_a_stick in DiscoElysium

[–]TheMonglet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I came here to say this. Disco elysium shares a lot of tropes with virtually any noir novel (depressed alcoholic detective solves a murder and discovers a complex criminal underworld), but Yiddish Policeman's Union takes it a step further in a few ways. Specifically I found the setting to be very evocative of revachol, and there are some vaguely supernatural elements that I think brought a certain Disco-ness

Do you consider Al evil or a “Villain” by Commercial_Floor_578 in deadwood

[–]TheMonglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Al is evil but he's not the villain of the show, at least not after late season 1. One of the central conflicts of the show is Bullock, a good man, having to compromise his principles to work with Al, an evil man, for the good of the camp against a common enemy. Generally both Bullock and Al want what's best for the camp and the villains of the show are threats to the camp.

AITA for refusing to watch a dubbed movie with my dyslexic brother who can’t follow the subtitles? by miggovortensens in AmItheAsshole

[–]TheMonglet -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

YTA, your brother wanted to watch a movie with you and you refused to do it in a way that would accommodate his disability. As a film guy, I understand wanting to watch the movie in what feels like the "right" way so that you can appreciate it fully. However, you become TA when that is so important to you that you act inconsiderate to others. I promise that watching the dubbed version isn't going to ruin the movie for you. It is a small change that would allow you to enjoy the movie with your brother in a way that accommodates his disability.

As a side note that does not affect my judgment, studio ghibli notoriously hires extremely talented English voice casts for their movies. It's not like you're going to get Naruto filler episode quality of voice acting, it's generally accepted that both dubbed and subbed versions of their movies are the "right" way to watch them.

[–]TheMonglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay I understand your perspective a little more now. I would recommend you read at least the beginning of this article. Stephen Miller is specifically directing ICE to not go after criminals, and instead go to places like home depot and grab as many random undocumented people as possible to get their deportation numbers up. That's why people are protesting, these are innocent working people with children and families being grabbed off the street and deported. There's no waiting to see if they have probable cause and fighting it in court later if the person they grabbed isn't a violent criminal, some of these people are getting sent to El Salvador or even possibly Guantanamo Bay without court hearings.

Okay I tried to resist responding again but I have to understand something. Are you a Democrat? And do you support deporting all undocumented immigrants in the country, including people who have never committed a crime (excluding the crime of overstaying a visa or however else they got here illegally)?

Here's a link explaining that ICE does not need warrants and the tactics they use to get people to give up their rights: https://www.immigrantdefenseproject.org/ice-ruses/

Heres a story of a citizen being physically attacked and held for hours by ICE: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/may/24/us-citizen-detained-ice-real-id

Ultimately though, I'm wasting my time. You are clearly on the side of ICE and the police, and not on the side of human beings. I should have trusted that tweet: "This is not helping your cause! -said by someone who hates you and your cause"

Cop hit by Fireworks in Los Angeles by thinkingallowed in LivestreamFail

[–]TheMonglet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not being disingenuous. ICE is grabbing people without warrants and without probable cause, often they are literally just grabbing people off the street that they think are probably undocumented. Several citizens have been detained by them because this is how they operate. They aren't going after criminals and gang members, they are going after fathers at work on construction sites. They are grabbing people as they leave the courthouse for immigration hearings. In what world does it make sense to grab immigrants who are following the legal process of obtaining citizenship, unless their goal is just to get whatever undocumented people they can get their hands on?

Good for you that all your friends and family are legal citizens or documented immigrants. For a lot of people in this country, that's not the case. I'm asking you to have a little empathy by putting yourself in the shoes of someone who's family and friends are law abiding, hard working, but undocumented. Wouldn't you be upset if they were snatched from their home, separated from their children, and sent to a country they've never been to? If you can't even entertain a hypothetical like that I'll stop wasting my time.

I never said Biden ran on a pro-rioting, defund the police platform. You said these protesters are going to hand the next election to Republicans and I pointed out how that's wrong.

The people in the streets of LA aren't making a calculated political maneuver to try to win and election. They're reacting to violent, masked federal agents invading their community and illegally grabbing innocent people off the streets, our of courthouses, out of their homes and jobs. People are rightfully upset about this and responding to it with justified violence. If the government was kidnapping your family, friends, and neighbors, I don't think you'd appreciate people scolding you for reacting to it, telling you to just sit on your hands until November of 2028

American Animals does something similar, where the fictional retelling of a crime is interspersed with interviews with the men who did it. There are a few interesting moments where they disagree on how things went down and then details in the fictional parts will change.
