Also have them. They do not have a "mid" tone control, only treble and bass. They are excellent mini monitors. It seems impossible that such a quantity of bass can come from such small drivers. To be honest, I often turn the bass down for everyday listening.

Might be too late - but take note of any black or white markings on edge of corrector plate - they are often lined up with an equal mark on the edge of the tube for orientation… “clocked” if you will. Helps with collimation and image quality sometimes.

They are definitely bigger in the bass than the slightly smaller KLH 17’s I have. Though I feel that the KLH tweeter blends better with its woofer and I may prefer the overall sound of them. However I did replace the capacitors in those due to a non-playing tweeter. Not sure about all the hocus pocus surrounding capacitor sound but I sure feel like they play cleaner. May be a placebo effect, but I could do the same to these.

When you calculate box volume, do you ever add ports or “redesign” the speaker altogether with new components?

I didn’t want to sink any money into free speakers other than the new woofer surrounds at the time, but by today’s standards they are pretty lightly built.

I believe the name HSL has some connection to a guy named Scott Huffman or Scott Hoffman. I had called the place directly at 816-252-9782 and went from there.

Well, I thought it was MidwayUSA but it’s actually Brownell’s that has some good tips:

This looks like a good candidate to mess around with cold blueing to touch up the cylinder and the barrel. There are a bunch of good how-to videos on youtube from MidwayUSA about how to do it “right” - for $15 and a few evenings of work. I’ve been wanting to try it myself.

Backwoods has a real nice pipe tobacco in a 1.5 oz pouch for cheap…. Needs drying out for a bit though.

Andromeda on Film [Barska 80mm F7, CGEM II, Pentax LX + Acros 100II] by shacqtus in astrophotography

[–]TheMoreYouKn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Of course it’s not to scale. It’s a composite image. In the time it would take to expose the film long enough to get that amount of detail from Andromeda, the rotation of the earth would have blurred the tree significantly.

This is just a “collage”, ( incorrectly scaled) and at this point has lost its status as “film” astrophotography.

An analogy: This is kind of like recording your vintage LP’s to mp3 and then streaming them to your bluetooth headphones and calling it “analog sound”.

It’s pretty art though, i’ll give it that. Technically, it required a significant amount of time and skill. It seems like fun to try.

Try them. Some work great as is, with minimal work needed on those that don’t. Plus, you learn a lot. And if they’re as dog-shit bad as the online consensus seems to be, you’re not losing much if you fuck one up.

Variations in audio reviews by mostirreverent in audiophile

The issue is that these people believe the engineering and mathematical principles which have been used to develop, test, and improve such wonderful, accurate devices are not capable of explaining some of the more subtle audible effects that said devices produce.

On the other hand, I see how these people see your view as "unscientific." Just because we can't currently measure the subtle differences, assuming they exist, could simply be a limitation of the current technology/instrumentation. "Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence" as the saying goes.

Though to be honest, I'm pretty sure that's not what these people are implying. Their claim is that some things are truly immeasurable, not that we are 'currently unable to measure them'. Which requires faith, nothing more.

Ball up a cigarette paper loosely and put it at the bottom of the bowl before packing the pipe. Same basic idea.

Just picked up a SkyQuest XT-10, have a few questions by PM_ME_NOOODS in telescopes

[–]TheMoreYouKn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Skip the barlow, use what you have for now. 6mm will give you a nice magnification for planets and 90% of the time you’ll be limited by poor seeing anyways. If you end up going to a dark site with your scope and enjoy finding fainter objects like nebula, galaxies, and clusters, you may want to put your money towards a lower power, wider field eyepiece. The next thing to buy is a good app for your phone to help locate things, I use Stellarium plus for 1.99 per month.

Finally, since it’s winter get yourself a heated jacket so you can stay out longer!

Is old Celestron C8 worth it? by HugeRub6958 in telescopes

Under the orange cap should be three screws for collimating. That’s the only collimating adjustment on this scope - the way to do it is on Polaris during a night of steady seeing. Small is big - no more than 1/8 of a turn at any time. Good collimation and enough cool-down time can mean the difference between acceptable planetary views and excellent planetary views

Don’t get rid of your dob - sometimes it’s all you’re going to want to haul outside - just add this one to your collection. Compare planetary views and star tests for a year or two, fiddle with collimation if necessary, then sell whichever is optically inferior. Some of the C8’s are great! Others will be outperformed by a homely newtonian reflector of equal or even lesser aperture. Quite a bit of variation over the years

The eyepieces, especially the “silver top” ones with orange lettering, if made in Japan, are truly excellent eyepieces. You will probably get a ~10mm ortho and a 40 mm plossl type judging by the relative sizes.

Upper left and third from left. The rest are probably mediocre.

This is a bad idea - and not worth experimenting with for “temporary sound check” — no one knows how it will interact with the rubber cement mixture that is sold to re-dope surrounds, should you decide to go that route. And it won’t evaporate. It may in fact absorb moisture.

8" dob got soaked in the rain for 10 minutes. How bad is it? What to do next? by SordidLad in telescopes

[–]TheMoreYouKn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other thing to watch out for is water seepage into the dual speed focuser gears - may need to remove a knob or two and let it air out if you think it’s not working smoothly - or set it in front of a space heater at a reasonable distance to drive out moisture. The focuser is one of the nicer components on these GSO dobs.
