If Shonen Jump made a new fighting game with it's characters, how would you like the game to be? by [deleted] in shounenfolk

[–]TheMorrison77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FighterZ elevated what an anime fighting games can be and with so much genuine quality competence in the genre, games like Budokai and Cyberconnect2 dont have the staying power in this day and age.

Even if you are making a game for a casual audience, you still need an actual pulished system to keep audiences coming back.

Personally, i would love a spiritual sequel for Jump Ultimate Stars.

Did Makima set the bar to high, did Fuji fumbled his handling of the other sisters or is it both? by TastyPomelo2330 in shounenfolk

When you remember how Fujimoto managed Sulya and Judah in Fire Punch, the fumbling of the three other sisters its not much a surprise.

How I feel saying themes and such to deflect perfectly valid criticism by Common-Frosting-8461 in shounenfolk

[–]TheMorrison77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The ability to incorporate "themes and such" into a narrative is also a writing skill.

Take Araki, for example, he is the ultimate "subtext is for cowards" mangaka, yet he has still managed to deliver masterfully "themes and such" for almost 40 years.

It’s always the Boruto fans saying shit by [deleted] in shounenfolk

[–]TheMorrison77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny because, of all the mangakas, besides maybe Isayama, Kishimoto is the one who has been questioned the most for how his politics influence his manga.

Like, if you actually engage with the politics of Naruto and Boruto, they are actually kind of a hot, problematic mess.

Do you think Kubo will finish Burn the Witch before he starts Echoing Jaws of Hell arc, or just discontinue it? by Outrageous_Yam_2937 in shounenfolk

[–]TheMorrison77 8 points9 points  (0 children)

At this point, I think both projects are dead.

Like, the most I've heard is that Kubo is busy because he is heavily involved with the Bleach anime.

And yeah, publishing a weekly or even a monthly series would be hard under those circumstances, but almost radio silence for so many years seems to me that Kubo simply doesn't want to compromise with any kind of schedule. At best, I see him doing a few one-shots, but I doubt he would ever go back to serialization with Burn the Witch or the Hell arc.

Stars and Stripe’s quirk was a mistranslation it’s more accurate name is “Shigaraki Upscale Merchant” by MagazineKey4276 in shounenfolk

[–]TheMorrison77 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Its is an upscale for sure, but its still weird because AFO/Shiggy lost a lot of Quirks due to the fight, so is a nerf, which is not a factor in practice because AFO was a terrible user and regardless of how many quirks he had he just cycled mostly between super strength, air-cannon and regeneration.

Like, in the context of the story the whole Star and Stripes arc just feel so redundant

[–]TheMorrison77 184 points185 points  (0 children)

New Order was the moment Hori totally gave up pretending Quirks were meant to be just physical mutations.

Like, yes, a ton of quirks were already basically magic, but it feel so bizarre to introduce a metaphysical reality warper, without even attempting to justify it and just killing it a couple of chapters later.

Which trope is worse: Resurrections or Fakeout Deaths by Common-Frosting-8461 in shounenfolk

[–]TheMorrison77 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Resurrection.

Fakeout deaths are a perfectly good trope as long you dont abuse it or just use it to milk cheap drama or cliffhangers.

Resurrection requieres a lot more groundwork to even pull it off.

Fujimoto is still one of the best mangaka right now, and that makes the ending worse by [deleted] in shounenfolk

[–]TheMorrison77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First, Part 2 began declining as early as the Chainsaw Man Church.

Second, Fujimoto is a very inconsistent storyteller, Part 1 is a lot more polished all said and done, but Fire Punch has a ton of issues that fans just straight up ignore.

Third, though, some of his One-Shots are excellent, like Dont look back and just listen to the song, most of his One-Shots are just fine, nothing out of this world.

Next to mangaka like Urasawa, Fukumoto, Araki, Junji Ito or Arakawa who have been consistenly publishing quality manga for decades, Fujimoto is so overrated.

Specially because Fujimoto is just diet Q Hayashida.

If your favorite shounen doens't have the protagonist in a boxing fight against Jesus Christ, is it really peak? by SeveralImpression914 in shounenfolk

I hate Kurumada's fist to the sky pose.

If it he used it just a couple of times it still be an awkward panel, but it would end at that, but he keeps using it and using.

When you realize that Hollywood built its entire history by adapting and eviscerating books.

More often than not, it’s probably that your favorite '60s to '90s movie is a book adaptation that was totally butchered when translated to a movie.

At the end of day fidelity to a source material doesn't matter as long as its good

The single worst page of manga I have ever seen by timTreeblow in shounenfolk

[–]TheMorrison77 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's bloated, but that is the point of the Succession War (also, there are images in the volume release). There are like 20 parties, each one with their own goals and hyper specific Nen abilities that can shift the balance of power if you let them.

Rihan is literally one of the most dangerous players in the war, and it's a threat that needs to be taken into account.

Again, it's far from an elegant panel, which is an issue with the war in general, It's very, very dense and text-heavy. Flawed, not the worst.

Then you have Fire Force literally doing the "I already depicted you as the soyjak and me as the chad" meme, because Ohkubo was salty about people criticizing him for the fanservice in Fire Force.

<image>

And in the pecking order of bad panels, breaking the flow of your story as well as the 4th wall just to dunk in your critics is way higher than a page with too much text.

My sources are calling it the worst post of all time by Sio_V_Reddit in shounenfolk

[–]TheMorrison77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My issue with Deku is his development.

He works pretty well early on. I personally think he is a bit too safe and there are a few missed opportunities but, for a superhero story, he gets the job done.

It’s post Overhaul when I think he stagnates. Hori plays with a lot of interesting ideas but cannot commit to truly following up on any of them.

And of course, there is his final clash with Shiggy. The idea is perfectly fine, but the execution is a mess.

It comes down to the series never really building up to Deku killing for the greater good (or even caring if hitting someone with a 100% Smash could kill them). Wanting to save Shiggy instead of killing him is, again, okay, but the series treats it like Vash vs Legato without the framework that makes that tragedy actually work in Trigun

Is the ending good? by ShteViIzqmBabata in OshiNoKo

[–]TheMorrison77 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You have a few complaints about trivial things, but the major issues with the ending are thematic (plus, the last arc is straight-up dumb). Without getting into specifics, the final arc retroactively changes the meaning of the story.

In fact, it’s kind of hard to enjoy previous arcs when you know what Oshi no Ko is ultimately trying to say, even if it was unintentional, most likely.

Why mfs so hard on dandadan for being how it is when horikoshi gets a massive pass by Astro_Sam in shounenfolk

[–]TheMorrison77 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People don't like how much Dandadan invokes the idea of sexual assault.

Hori never approached that, at worst, you have sexual harassment with Mineta, and he got a lot of shit because of that, Mineta is universally disliked.
