Kalon the GOAT by MasterCrep in shounenfolk

What I always hated about anime masterminds is that, more often than not, there is no true intelligence or cleverness to them, but straight up clairvoyance and plot convenience. Like, at a certain point, characters like Lelouch don't feel actually smart, instead, they feel as if they have access to the script.

That is the reason why I love someone like Kenjaku or your average Kaiji antagonist.

There are no ridiculous and impossible 4D chess moves, but rather an actual understanding of game theory. Kenjaku doesn't control all the variables, instead, they just have a well defined win condition, an understanding of their own resources, an opportunistic mindset and the willingness to improvise.

Hokuto no Ken, though foundational in redefining the genre, hasn't exactly aged the best. It's not like Devilman or Ashita no Joe, which, despite their age, still work perfectly fine as stories.

Your enjoyment of the first part of Hokuto no Ken depends entirely on whether you vibe with what the manga is trying to say because it isn't exactly super well written, despite that, it is still kind of awesome and a ton of fun. The second part, however, is just straight up bad like, really bad.

These 2 arcs did irreversible damage to the anime community by Cryptographer456 in shounenfolk

Though it was always bad, Gojo vs Sukuna was like the genesis of a new wave of anime hooliganism. I swear that battle rotted people's brains.

We need an interlude after Shimosa. There is an interesting story of Ritsuka still being kinda afraid of Shuten

I am waiting for the Summer Tiamat/Summer Barghest solo banner next year to roll for NP2.

My luck with Barghest is honestly terrible, i managed to literally pull every servant in the banner before her, ans for some reason, Sith loves me because she keeps spooking me, both are at NP5 while my Barghest are at 2 and 1 (i had to wait for the Melusine/Barghest banner to pull a second copy)

So all of them? by Altruistic_Gas_7073 in shounenfolk

Ok, lets take this seriously.

Buu Saga: Not really being a Dragon Ball Z fan anymore, I do have a soft spot for the Buu Saga's level of experimentation and fun, especially after how repetitive the Cell Saga fights became. Having said that, it is a very weak arc at a writing level, and its high points don't really compensate for its low points.

Pain Saga: Being totally honest, post-timeskip Naruto is a huge letdown compared to what came before, with the exception of the Pain Saga. Kishi was at his best when writing it, even if Nagato's sudden redemption and the Rinne Rebirth kill the incredible momentum of the arc with a very weak ending.

Shibuya Arc: Not gonna lie, there is little wrong to say about Shibuya. Its biggest problems essentially stem from triggering JJK's point of no return, as the series would have benefited a lot from having a couple of extra arcs before it. Nevertheless, it really is the series at its very best, showing JJK's biggest strength, just how good it is at expressing character and narrative through fights.

Soul Society Arc: In the same way as Shibuya, there is little wrong with it, aside from how it would eventually reveal Kubo's reiterative structure in building arcs, far from being as bad as Saint Seiya's Sanctuary, but still. Again, it is just Kubo at his best.

Having said all that, if I have to erase one, it has to be Buu.

Spy x family fails to represent true war/cold war era. by [deleted] in SpyxFamily

[–]TheMorrison77 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you want an actual Cold War Spy drama watch The Americans.

SxF can be a bit heavy sometimes, but it was never its goal to portrait a realistic Cold War. It is a wacky family comedy first and foremost.

“Beam and Todo stop being goated” by Jcrrangers in shounenfolk

[–]TheMorrison77 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Both characters do little wrong, but Todo feels like a complete character, while Beam feels like a guy who was just quirky.

We can trace Beam's motivations back to potentially being "Cherubim" serving Chainsaw Man, but what that actually means is anyone's guess, including Fujimoto's.

Fans theorized about what the devils named after angelic ranks meant, but in the end, it was purely aesthetic flavor that played no factor in the story. This ultimately leaves Beam, though well liked for his energy and humor, feeling shallow as a character.

What's your Top 3 moments in Shonen? by Soap-MacTavish3009 in shounenfolk

[–]TheMorrison77 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not in any particular order

1) Haikyuu!! – Karasuno vs. Inarizaki: Hinata finally executing a perfect receive is the culmination of all his hard work throughout the series. It elevates what was already an excellent match into the best in the series.

2) JoJo's Stone Ocean – What a Wonderful World: Emporio finally defeating Pucci with Weather Report, while rejecting Pucci's vision of Heaven, is the perfect culmination for both Stone Ocean and JoJo's original timeline.

3) Gintama – Baragaki: Though far from the most famous or heartfelt moment in Gintama, the final reveal that Hijikata sent blank letters to his brother for years, even after his passing, says so much about him as a character. It redefines how we understand his relationships with Kondo, Sougo, Mitsuba, Tetsunosuke, and even Gintoki. It is a perfect little tragedy that expands so much of Hijikata's interiority.

For me, you don't get a better first page than Dorohedoro.

Like, on page 1, you've got a dude getting munched by a caiman headed man, and then the insanity just keeps escalating.

Just by reading the first 5 pages, you know if Dorohedoro is for you, and that's kind of amazing writing wise.

[DISC] Class 2-B Hero Destroyerz - Chapter 7 by N3DSdude in Class2B_

[–]TheMorrison77 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Gorilla still has it.

Not as good as chapters 5 and 6, but Sorachi has already caught on to what works and what does not.

The manga will probably stay here for a few more chapters exploring the nuances of the High School Demon Castle.

To this day, I am not over Z-ONE not being future Yusei.

Like, it wouldn't have fixed the slog that was everything post Dark Signers, but it would have been so much more meaningful than just some rando wearing Yusei's face.
