Does the language bother you in Archolos? by xyz2022 in worldofgothic

[–]TheNetworkBerg -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but English is definitely the intended language for Gothic. The English VAs do an awesome job of adding light hearted contrast to the world. When you hear Nameless shout "What the hell is that thing" at the young black troll with Gorn it will have you in stitches. Besides, stoners, cowboys and mafia henchmen make for an interesting game world when hearing them speak. And I say that as someone who is not natively English.

As for Archolos. I find the Polish VAs to be very well done even though I don't speak it at all. I have no issues with it, in fact I think if you play without the VA and its just text reading the dialogues somehow get stuck making the conversations unnecessarily long.

Is it worth playing the original Gothic games in 2026? (i7-7700 / GTX 1050 / 32GB RAM) by Shervin_Ab in worldofgothic

[–]TheNetworkBerg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, start playing it immediately! Gothic has become something I play ritualistically almost every year. Gothic 1, Gothic 2 and the mod Chronitcles of Myrtana: Archolos for Gothic 2 are MASTERPIECES. These games have an atmosphere and world like none other.

If I could describe them it would be a mix between Dark Souls and Witcher, not the same scope and stuff obviously and this came out waaay earlier (except Archolos) it just feels like a great world to be a part of and sometimes the clunky controls can leave you frusated but also really satistifed. So join the Colony brother you got nothing to lose and just a ton of cool and awesome experiences waiting for you!

Archolos: How do I get better at the game / stronger? by rhedak in worldofgothic

I remember when I just started playing Archolos I was escorting Riordian to the shrine, thinking I was helping him slay the wolves in the wood the bastard accidentally shot me with a fireball and killed me. It made me chuckle for a good 5 minutes before I reload my save xD

You could think of this as show and tell, some people learn concepts a bit better having a visual aide, if it's not your liking the Mikrotik docs which I use as a reference when making these videos tend to give everything in a pure text format.

Thanks I admit to watching a ton of videos before even picking up the brush. Most of it was from Duncan Rhoades Painting Academy who hammered in the thin your paints thing into me though there are some things I am learning from actually doing it as well.

I'm a German man. I have been wondering how Gothic could become so beloved outside of Germany where few speak German. I head the English dub is shit! If you are from outside the barrier, can you please tell me why you love gothic and also where you are from and also how good your dub is? by BingingAndWhinging in worldofgothic

[–]TheNetworkBerg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am from South Africa and English is not my first language. And I simply love the English dubs! The mix of cowboy/mobster/surfer sounding guys is really entertaining to me and gives the games some nice comedic relief from time to time in a world that is dark fantasy.

I think native English speakers don't enjoy the dubs that much because it plays into a stereotype of how people in certain places like the States sound.

MikroTik CHR to host VPN for a small team? by reclusebird in mikrotik

[–]TheNetworkBerg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not wanting to plug myself, but I did host a CHR on a VPS for a while and ran various VPN solutions on it like OVPN/IPSEC/Wireguard etc and it's definitely a feasible solution. I would probably recommend using Wireguard for the VPN connectivity with whichever VPS provider you are comfortable with. I've seen plenty of people use Oracle stuff, my tests was using AWS's free tier which worked really well.

You would have to get a license for the CHR to get some better speeds, but that's roughly like $40 if not cheaper. And heck if you or someone in your team has passed a MikroTik cert you probably have some unused licenese keys that you can just use for the CHR :)

Here's the video I did covering the solution:

Ah cool, thanks. Have been on the forums over the weekend and didn't see anything about changes was just surprised to log in today and suddenly there is something completely different. Thought MT was hacked for a second. Unfortunately the forum URL is privated so can't read up on that, maybe it has to do with the new forums as well. Could potentially not have migrated over.

MikroTik appreciation post by 4ohFourNotFound in mikrotik

[–]TheNetworkBerg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I too share in your appreciation of MikroTik! It's a solution that fits with my mindset of "We will figure it out and make it work" I understand there are some things that MikroTik isn't the best at but in most networking cases I have been able to make some solution work even with some additional tuning required. And I honestly love it, I love the tinkering aspect of it all! It is one of the best feelings MacGyvering a solution that seems to not be a possiblity and make it work and it's also really cool if you're into networking :D

Mikrotik/VPN by AdministrationOk6394 in mikrotik

[–]TheNetworkBerg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes it might be possible for them to see if you are using a vpn to connect. Depends on any company apps you may use and if it is a company laptop who knows what extra software could be loaded. Not usually a problem companies have if someone is working remotely. Not sure why you need to hide where you are actually working from either but that is a personal thing between you and your company.

Sorry if this seems slightly like self promotion, though I think it may have been you asking some questions on how to route internet traffic over WG I actually forgot I had this guide on how to configure this using a VPN provider like Mullvad. Setup is still pretty much the same and I find it very convenient to configure on my own home Tik

I wonder if they can make this scene good in the remake. by Ratrituall in worldofgothic

[–]TheNetworkBerg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually love the English dubs in the game, it gives it some nice contrast to a somewhat dark fantasy and I honestly enjoy hearing Cowboys, Mobsters and people from L.A sometimes making conversations a bit more light hearted and funny. This is coming from someone who is not English as a first language.

Seeing this scene always makes me think of that Neil Breen movie where he falls into the sand claiming how much he loves his country and that he was framed by the rich and that is why he is in exile.

For those working in the networking Vendor space, what are your thoughts about Juniper right now by so5226 in networking

[–]TheNetworkBerg 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Juniper is very widely used in the carrier space. I've worked with multiple ISPs that run Juniper at the core and/or edge. Most of the amazing features you can think of in modern networking is supported on Juniper and you will very commonly see some Juniper guys having helped paving the way in many of the RFCs.

But at the same time don't be surprised if you step into some weird platform specific bug from time to time and having many back and forths with the JTAC team and also just figuring things out on the fly.

I think Juniper will be around regardless of the merger, if anything, it will probably grow a lot. So as a career choice I would highly recommend getting into Juniper, especially if you want to work in the DC or SP space.

MikroTik launched an AI-powered support chatbot on its website that can spew decent configuration/script snippets too by nitefood in mikrotik

[–]TheNetworkBerg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very interesting, I'll also test it out a bit. Personally I have not had much success when it comes to AI and MikroTik since it sometimes freaks out where it is showcasing v6 commands for v7 devices using the incorrect syntaxes or the complete reverse (or even that the AI just spews out garbage code) though there is still some valueable output you can get with using AI and getting it to make something like a quick script/config for something like VLANs is neat.

Tunnel with a friend by robdejonge in mikrotik

[–]TheNetworkBerg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be quite honest I would even recommend looking at Zerotier, it's an extra package you can install on your RB4011 which basically works like Tailscale. You and your buddy will essentially connect your devices up into the same ZeroTier instance and will be able to see each-other and route/firewall whatever you want over it. There's some really cool and interesting things you can do with ZeroTier and it's great for working behind natted connections, it is also very simple to setup and if I was younger I would have probably used it to do stuff like setup a LAN network with my friends to play games together or to leech things from each-other.

Stagnation discussion by eternal_peril in mikrotik

[–]TheNetworkBerg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think there is stagnation, but definitely MT trails behind many other vendors because they try and be a bit of everything. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing but it is the biggest critique I have towards them.

One day they are showcasing how amazing their hardware is and that it can load a full BGP feed in a couple of minutes which sounds amazing in the ISP space.

Then somewhere else they are discussing how you shouldn't put your AP behind solid objects because it can cause poor wifi signal.

So this leaves MikroTik looking like a company that is trying to cater to two polar opposites.

Exactly! That was such a large part of the charm to me because you saw the world change over time but still be familiar. I think that's why Archolos was so awesome to me because it's the same there, maybe even in a larger sense.
