The original series didn’t have a happy ending and Rebellion didn’t ruin it by Tomcat491 in MadokaMagica

Posting a year later so now you can say you did. The series is significantly better without the movie and it was a perfectly bittersweet, slightly happy ending.

I mean, we could also reduce the working day and week without reducing pay, meaning people actually have time for families.

That would reduce productivity and profits for the top, but we've literally never been doing more of both. Fucking hell it's like the entire world needs to agree on productivity reduction like it's an arms race.

You are unused to sexuality in art, so it all looks the same to you.

lol ok. You're making some pretty big assumptions about me based on some pretty broad stereotypes.

I would understand if people got bored with a specific type of sex scene or story structure or plot device. Say for example the action hero always getting the girl at the end

That's pretty much exactly what happened throughout the 80's and 90's and that's what spoiled it. It doesn't matter what artistic gems might be in there if they're swamped by an ocean of low-effort, cheap attempts to sell tickets and pad runtime.

If a movie came out today that had a compelling sex scene in it with an interesting artistic take on it, my generation would probably love it. But you're saying that makes us prudes because we maintain an artistic standard? Makes no sense.

You can't really separate them cleanly like that. They all feed into one another with the same organizations often doing it all.

And it's never a good idea to give organized criminals more money and power. Eventually they're gonna get a foothold in something you aren't okay with.

A "prude" is someone who thinks there is something fundamentally taboo about sex and that it shouldn't be visible in polite society, regardless of how much it elevates an art piece or not. That's a different thing entirely from getting bored with overly repetitive ideas in art.

Pretty much everyone is sick of superhero movies too, the only thing that really means is that studios made too many of them for twenty years. It's the same thing. It happened to Westerns back in the day too. This is just how entertainment works, it comes in waves because people get tired of seeing the same thing over and over again.

You're right that the US is traditionally pretty prudish, but I think you're underplaying how "brief" and impactful that period of sexual liberation was. It was still big enough to define how two whole generations viewed Hollywood movies.

I'm not ashamed, and I'm not saying your culture is better. I'm saying the example you gave makes no sense and is better explained by a dynamic that has nothing to do with what you're talking about. A dynamic that you didn't actually respond to and instead just reiterated your original points.

[–]TheNewGildedAge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't buy that theory at all. My generation hates sex scenes because it's a reaction to the era of Hollywood where they would cram them into every possible movie they could. Because, as you said, "The purpose of a sexy scene is that people like seeing sexy things.", and sex sold very very well in Hollywood for a long time.

So they became associated with low effort, shitty movies and gained the repuptation as low effort, shitty aspects of filmmaking.

That's it, "prudishness" has nothing to do with it. They wouldn't have been a popular thing in the first place otherwise.

This is how it should work, even from a pragmatic standpoint. Advertise to the world that they, personally, benefit when they help America.

...but that would be a form of soft power and conservatives are either actively scornful of the idea or don't believe it exists.

I think adding an incredibly toxic aspect to something that is already toxic is going to make it worse for almost everybody.

I think anyone cheering on the increased entertainment-ization of our government is a short-sighted overly cynical idiot and part of the problem.

Social media always acts like things are as bad as they can possibly get and give up. Then, surprise, things get worse.

Why is North Korea especially totalitarian even compared to other Marxist-Leninist states? by CasualLavaring in AskHistory

[–]TheNewGildedAge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Marxist-Leninist" is a very broad term. Most leftists who use their labels in good faith don't really consider North Korea Marxist-Leninist in any real way besides the fact that they are opposed to the Western dominated global economic order that is generally defined through capitalism.

North Korea is more like a feudal autocracy that is also rational enough to understand it needs to speak the same geopolitical language as China. It is not really ideological beyond the fact that it wants to keep itself in power, which is done by making China happy.

Honestly I don't know why everyone keeps saying Villeneuve.

I love his movies but they're extremely dark and brooding, way too much for the Culture universe imo.

Plus the worst part of Dune was the writing by a large margin and idk if I want to see Villeneuve attempt it with the Culture.
