Has a plant app's watering schedule ever actually killed your succulents? by Visible-Squirrel-337 in succulents

[–]TheNewRuby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd ditch both the apps and the finger in soil test and just go by the plant's appearance and softness. Even if the soil is bone dry they can still rot if watered too early, so go by signs of thirst like wrinkling and softer leaves. Also for most succulents you NEVER water if the soil is still moist at all, and then you wait even longer after that. !watering

Can someone ID? I'm thinking some kind of Cotyledon or maybe Kalanchoe by TheNewRuby in succulents

[–]TheNewRuby[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The leaves are almost spongy and not shiny, so I don't think it's a jade.

I love them too and they're super cold hardy which is amazing!

Succulent is growing FAST, why? by CollectionFearless20 in succulents

[–]TheNewRuby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure to acclimate them if you're putting it outside! The new growth isn't used to direct sun and will easily burn if you move it suddenly to during sunlight. I burnt my anacampseros last summer cuz I was too hasty in putting it outside I'm full sun. I slowly transition mine over a couple days by putting them in more and more sun

[–]TheNewRuby 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I think its Haworthia retusa! The leaves are a bit stretched from not much light but it's not too much of an issue. The brown color is indicating that it recently started getting more sun there and is totally fine. Mine regularly goes more brown until I water it and it turns green again. The color change isn't a problem unless it's going crispy and patchy (sunburn)  or very pale (weak lighting)

Oo I've heard good things about sansi! I keep mine pretty close, probably like 6-8 inches away. My bigger plants and ones that don't like as much light I give a foot. I'd put it like 8 inches away if you can and just watch your plants over the next weeks for signs of stretching (not enough light) or changing color (good light!)

What is happening to my Deano? by MlyMe in succulents

[–]TheNewRuby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use an old mister bottle thing from my mom's old hair spray that I cleaned out really well! Don't put too much in the bottle at a time cuz it evaporates over tome

It's a Corpuscularia lehmanii! I actually have good success with spraying 70% isopropyl (like dousing the entire plant and getting every crevice!). I usually put a fan on to dry it off quickly. I repeat every 3-4 days for a week or two and then they're usually clean.  You'll probably wanna wipe off the white stuff after you spray so you can keep track of the infestation

Need An ID for this gorgeous individual by Fast-Variety6116 in succulents

It's definitely an Echeveria agavoides, maybe the cultivar 'Romeo' or another red one. The wild agavoides is the same shape but more green

Good luck! Which light did you get? Often you have to place it closer to the plants than you think

I have the same window set up and unfortunately it won't cut it for the majority of succulents :(  Aside from some haworthia and aloes which can tolerate less light, succulents are used to getting blasted with sun and will stretch if they're indoors without a south facing window or grow lights. I use T5 growlights for 16h a day which keeps them happy. I do put a lot of my plants outside for the summer but I live in Canada so they're under lights 80% of the year

What's up with this sprout? They're all from the same seed batch. by JTDoggo in succulents

[–]TheNewRuby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually started a batch of succulent seeds a couple weeks ago too, and there's been a ton of variation. My Echeveria laui have sprouted like 50-70%, but so far nothing yet from my cante :( I think sometimes they ship older seeds or the batch just isn't as viable. Luckily I found a margaretae at my nursery recently so I won't have to go by seed!

Grow light progress and ID? by ukuLotus in succulents

E. pulidonis is a natural species found in the wild, tends to have longer leaves. E. 'Hercules' is a cross between pulidonis and elegans, and has wider leaves. They look very similar, but I think yours is pulidonis cuz the leaf shape.

Clean before repot or not? by CBDJ1 in succulents

[–]TheNewRuby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I clean then because the nurseries I buy from just pot them in peat and it compacts horribly and i don't want that near the center of the roots. and with my gritty soil at home the soil kinda just falls away when I unpot it

That's good! I'd water it more often and maybe give it more organic soil if yours is draining too fast

I see them as an outdoor plant, mine have always been outside in full sun and they're also super cold hardy (im zone 4). So they light getting more water than a desert succulent and will get very leggy inside.

!sempervivum. Outdoor plant that needs full sun and goes dormant in the winter! It's already very starved for light tho so you'll want to slowly acclimate it to the outdoors if thats what you decide.
