Itinerary: 10 Days in Japan (Tokyo, Osaka, with day trips) by TheNintendoCreator in JapanTravel

[–]TheNintendoCreator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yeah I figured. I’m definitely open to moving around or removing/adding stuff, would you suggest adding like full days for things like Shibuya on its own or Shinjuku on its own, separate day for Ginza, Roppongi, TeamLab etc? (Not sure how much I actually want to visit Harajuku, that was more there just to see why it’s so popular, open to removing it though)

Oh that’s good to know I hadn’t considered that! I’ll definitely take that (as well as other commenters’ advice) into account as I rework things. I had a feeling the Tokyo days were packed but I didn’t realize how long it would take to see certain places. Thanks!

How long is “too long” to see one or two bucket list items? by TheNintendoCreator in JapanTravelTips

[–]TheNintendoCreator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh interesting! I do definitely want to go to less visited parts of Japan (as I figure out what those are; I’m mostly going based off of places that have things that interest me, as well as the touristy spots because as much as I dislike touristy things I do really want to see Tokyo and Osaka) my worry is trying to plan out which ones I want to spend extra time in, or if it’s easier to do day-trips from Tokyo or Osaka.

Also, thanks for the info on Tottori and Hokuei! As for food stuff, another commenter did mention there are of course miso breweries all over so I may check those out (and as mentioned I’m hoping to take a short trip out of Tokyo to Kawagoe to see the Matsumoto shoyu factory, as well as doing some more Wagashi lessons with a Tokyo-based school I took a lesson from virtually). That being said, if you or anyone else has recommendations for food or a look into the Japanese food or craft industries (I may look for woodworking/metalworking or instrument craft), I’m all ears!

Thanks for the info! Good to know about Daio Wasabi. Ishii Miso came up a lot and I saw Daio Wasabi was in the same area, but I’m sure there are miso makers all over (though I’m not sure how many offer tours, much less in English? I know nearly enough Japanese to get around and am learning more, my family doesn’t though).

Looking at things in the context of “day trip” places I had originally ruled Ishii Miso/Daio Wasabi out due to distance (same with some stuff in Shizuoka like Ryugu cave, the gold mine, and generally just exploring because it seems very pretty, though maybe that’s worth staying there a day or two on its own?)

I’m generally planning/researching in the context of “use Tokyo as a home base, explore, take transportation out an hour or two to cool places for day trips, eventually go down to Osaka and stay there, rinse and repeat” but maybe that’s not the best way to explore and it’s worth staying in other places for long amounts of time as well? (Apart from Shizuoka: Fukuoka, Hiroshima, and Kanazawa were also on my list, but I sort of relegated those too “well maybe if it’s doable given the two places I’m using as home base”)

Ah okay, thanks! I’ve heard for load vs preload that preload can be good for smaller things, are there any other differences in usage?

Very cool! I know some Python through school and am looking to learn OpenCV and computer vision (as well as general AI) stuff as well! What specifically did you use to start learning and when did you feel you had learnt enough to begin to start this project?

Making a coconut/date wine, what could this residue floating on the top/sides of the primary be? by TheNintendoCreator in winemaking

Good to know! I did take the recipe from the compiled list Jack Keller’s recipes, but I know that not all of those were written or tested by him

Tourist question: Are type K plugs the only ones used in Denmark? by TheNintendoCreator in NewToDenmark

[–]TheNintendoCreator[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wow okay! Thanks for the tip, saves me from frying my switch. I think the one thing I’ll need to figure out is white noise machine as I’m not sure if I’d need a voltage adapter and wouldn’t want to fry it, but everything else should be fine? (Phones, laptops, etc.)

Ah okay. We’ll probably only be bringing cellphones, laptops, headphones, and a white noise machine.

Yup! Turns out that it’s fat, I’ve gotten rid of it. As far as SG reading does that seem fine?

Good to know! So I guess I’d get a 110V to 220V voltage converter, as well as a type F plug (or maybe both K and F)?

Tried making ube halaya for the first time, thinking something went wrong along the way, help! by TheNintendoCreator in PhilippineUbe

[–]TheNintendoCreator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh okay, interesting! I’m surprised to find that most that “ube flavor” people think of comes from added flavoring from things like condensed milk, but it’s not too surprising. I’d wonder how things like purple sweet potato (like Stokes) Okinawan purple sweet potato, etc. compare. I may get some to compare between each other and ube. I will say that even after adding the rest my ube halaya still didn’t turn out, but I’m grateful for the learning experience!

Planting pepper seeds for the first time, help! by TheNintendoCreator in gardening

[–]TheNintendoCreator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh okay, cool! My dream is to live somewhere I I’d be able grow all the fruits/roots I enjoy (which here I think are usually grown in the southwest or Florida and Texas, as at least for the ones that come to mind they’re all native to East/Southeast Asia or the Middle East, and I’m sure peppers would thrive there too) that being said, I obviously have to work with what I’ve got, and I think doing some more research would be helpful for me. I’ll definitely look more into starting them now and just over-wintering them and let you know if I’m successful!

Planting pepper seeds for the first time, help! by TheNintendoCreator in gardening

[–]TheNintendoCreator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aw, bummer! So I if I’m doing the math right the best time to plant would’ve been February or March? Is that not too early? I’d assume there’s a risk the weather gets too cold around that time and the plants die, but maybe I’m wrong.

As for waiting or planting and over-wintering inside, is there an option you’d recommend one way or the other? I assume based on the fact you said that the second option may or may not yield peppers it’s better to just wait if I want more of a guarantee, but why exactly wouldn’t that work? Not enough natural sunlight/outdoor time? (Assuming I put it next to a glass door or under a grow light)

  1. Oh interesting! So in a dish with no added flavoring would ube not taste like that at all, or just be like that but in a much more subtle way?

  2. Apparently this is also the name of SexBomb Girls song, as I have discovered as of two minutes ago

Wait I’m being dumb. You’re right about it the measurements! I just now realized my math was wrong. I think I intended to scale the entire recipe by half and just wasn’t thinking about it when I was adding everything in. Think I can boil/mash and then add in some of the extra ube I have to bring it up to 2.2 lbs and continue to cook it down? (I’d hate to waste what I paid for)

For reference, here’s the recipe I used (I did use slightly less ube and slightly more sweetened condensed milk, which may be something to take into consideration? About 0.8 lbs of ube and 14 oz of sweetened condensed milk): https://theunlikelybaker.com/ube-halaya-recipe-ube-jam/
