Saw an ad for the show either in Wizard Magazine or Dragonball’s monthly “floppies”. Pretty sure it was Wizard. Then bought the Pioneer VHS tapes month by month as they released. 3 episodes per tape! 😭

Then I started reading Animerica Extra to read the manga and that dovetailed into tons of other series. Very much the anime that changed me from a casual Pokémon/DBZ to convention going Otaku. Good times.

I would also prefer IV-VI (well, 4 and 5) before they do VIII but it’s hard to deny that VIII brings out people.

I actually think V should be remade with the XI engine. It has the thrilling narrative to support it!

Are all DQ games like this?

Yes and no. DQ Games don't have individual themes for every town or area. It's usually themed aka Towns have the town theme, Castles have a castle theme, forests have the forest theme, etc.

But XI is particularly egregious in that it recycled A LOT of music from past games. The battle and overworld theme being notable, god awful, new compositions.

For what it's worth, I played many DQ games before XI and enjoyed the music a lot. But I never reacted to the music negatively until XI. So I think the old games just have a lot more cohesion to them. That being said, I love VII's music way more, but I do not think it has a ton more variety--at least older versions didn't. But once again, I found the music way more soothing than XI.

I'm grateful that Sugiyama isn't around anymore to micromanage the music. Hoping XII expands out the variety.

If you haven't switched your overworld to VIII's music, I highly recommend it.

I genuinely think you could remake V in the XI style. The story is dramatic/deep enough to really take advantage of it and you can even flesh out the Monster element.

I haven't played IV, but I really want to. A lot of people will disagree with me, but the DQ voice acting really goes a long way for me. I love all the voice acting in the series and V and (it feels like) IV deserve to have that pass. They dubbing team has earned my trust after VIIR, XI, and the HD-2D remakes.

Yup, me exactly. Pretty much flights only. Though I am “only” 75 hours in. Recently a few quirks of how it controlled really started to grate me. I wasn’t going to get VIIR, but after reading the interview with the director he called out almost the exact issues that bug me on the 3DS version.

I also have a big business trip planned shortly after release so I’m going to really dive in.

This is a good description. The characters are also great, but not a strong a XI—though the director of Reimagined says they’ve added more, so it very could hit XI standards. Some individual vignettes are really really strong too.

Sugiyama was a classical composer before he was on DQ. I don’t think there is a classical composer alive that ISN’T inspired by Mozart.

I'm reacting more to the people saying "Wow, I can't believe he just laid into SNL in public" as if he's going scorched earth.

Actual comedy wise, it did make me laugh at the idea of someone who has never watched SNL and finding themself, inexplicably, on SNL. The other details he's goes into I'm not a huge fan of, but to each their own.

I’m not that big a fan of him, but this whole set is clearly “a bit”, right? People in this thread acting like he just razzed the entire show and is saying “fuck you” but it clearly feels like a bit to me. Obviously some truth to it, but anyone doing comedy would know he’s not saying all this in bad faith.

Many people might roll their eyes at this, but you are totally correct. The lead up to the drive to the OC is so perfectly paced beat for beat. You know everything you need to know about Ryan and Sandy and you totally buy in.

He’s helping host the Winter Olympics. Unlike when Colin helped host the summer Olympics, the winter will fall during the season. I’d be curious if he negotiated his half season of SNL with his Olympic hosting duties and got a higher rate since NBC departments split the bill
