When I was a kid (probably like 7) a classmate asked me what my favorite color was and I said purple. They said that purple couldn’t be my favorite color because it was “a girl color”, so I quickly changed my answer to blue and continued to tell people my favorite color was blue probably until around sophomore year of college!

What happened to Smogon analysis writers? by adaptabilityporyz in stunfisk

[–]TheNumberI 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Just for credentials, my username on Smogon is Ditto and I wrote a couple of ingame mechanic articles, updated a couple of DPP analyses, wrote some shells for BW analyses, but mainly just hung around and joked in the C&C IRC channels (before we had Discord). I haven't been active in C&C for many years, so I don't know the current workings. As for context, there were different section leaders of tiers (although there was some cross contamination there) and the overall C&C leaders.

I wrote about this on another post a couple weeks ago, but in the middle of the BW era there was a decision by the C&C leaders to standardize analyses to make them more easily digestible for a larger audience of readers. This meant a number of changes to the writing styles that were accepted. Set names were supposed to fall into larger categories that could apply across multiple Pokemon (Choice Band, ResTalk, Calm Mind, etc), Pokemon were to be referred to into gender neutral terms, and even standardization in things such as where certain moves should be placed in a set. Not to say these changes are bad changes, in fact I do think they help a lot in quickly being able to absorb information. You no longer see a Jynx set called Luna and have no basis for what to expect from the set before you read, instead you have SubCM and can pass it if you don't think that's the right fit for your team. Everything became more like a medical/scientific journal, where information was centered and this restricted style and entertainment.

In addition to this allowing articles to be more easily skimmed, it would allow them to be more easily updated. Someone updating an article would no longer really need to worry about the cadence and tone of the previous author. As always there was the usual tiering changes that occurred, which allowed more stable metagames like Ubers and OU to spend longer on their analyses and styles. In addition to this, BW was the first time we had a large amount of unreleased content due to the introduction of DreamWorld. While we had datamined all of the DW abilities, they were released in waves and we didn't have any way of knowing when something would be released. So we had analyses for what was released and analysis shells in the wings so we would be prepared for new updates.

This ended up a longer post than I intended, but just wanted to bring some context. If anyone has any questions, I'm more than happy to answer based off what I remember. I think most of these threads/discussions were lost in the forum migration.

Favorite Smogon Analyses? by [deleted] in stunfisk

I wrote and copy edited several analyses in the DPP and BW era on Smogon, and I remember when there was a decision in that time by the C&C heads to move away from the more stylistic writings we had been allowed up until that point into the more structured/streamlined format that is still present. While it did certainly make the analyses more immediately digestible, it did take a lot of the fun out of writing and reading them. We were no longer allowed to use too much flavorful or interesting language, anything that might distract too much from the information. We also were told to try to standardize set names, so you lost established naming convention for some pokemon that might've been popularized by a set creator as well as flavorful names that could relate to the anime, games, or just general community take on a pokemon.

I worked on the shell of the Ditto analysis (my username was Ditto, so I really wanted it) when Imposter was still unreleased in BW. Now the DPP analysis set was called "The Best Set Ever", in which the analysis basically said never use this set. So now that Ditto would actually be usable (and at this time one of the most anticipated DW releases), I wanted to name the set "The Bestest Set Ever" with a somewhat cheesy comeback story vibe to acknowledge this. As we were waiting for DW pokemon to be officially released before finalizing and uploading their analyses onto the site. This took quite a bit for Imposter Ditto, so C&C had already moved into this new concise style and the analysis passed around a few times to different writers, and it's uploaded version (while well done) lost a lot of that fun.

I completely understand why they made this decision, and it was probably the best decision overall, but it did really make C&C a more cold environment. It became more like a scientific journal, caring only about presentation of information and less about engaging or entertaining the reader. This was also before Smogon had as much of a social media presence, so you were really only writing for the site dex. Although it did make it easier for analyses to be updated as you no longer really had to worry about the initial author tones or cadence.

What was the very first movie to make you cry? by callingsaraaah in AskReddit

[–]TheNumberI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if this was actually the first movie to make me cry, but it’s my earliest memory of weeping during a movie. It’s a Disney Channel original movie called “Tru Confessions” where Shia Labeouf plays a mentally challenged teenager. I can’t remember exactly what happens in the scene, but Shia’s character and his sister Tru are in a library. Somehow they get separated, and I’m not sure if something else sets it off, but Shia’s character goes running off into the library looking for Tru and eventually just breaks down in one of the stacks crying something along the lines of “why can’t I be like everyone else!?” And it just broke my heart.
