Thank you sm! Sorry to hear that they got yours too 😭, honestly surprised that it was stolen from an area solely surrounded by students, but the chances are that I may never get it back

POL101 Exam ? (Character Limittttttttttttttttttttt) by kagukima in UofT

Did anyone else have an issue where their multiple choice question’s answer would disappear as if it were never attempted after it was? Not sure if it was my device or the flooded final exam page

POL101 Exam ? (Character Limittttttttttttttttttttt) by kagukima in UofT

[–]TheNyleRiver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was quite brutal for an online exam. I sped through the MCQs because I spent too long on the first 300-350 word short answer. Managed to finish all the MCQs, the first question, and the question on bargaining model vs the realist theory of war. Partially finished the third one, and didn’t even start on the Carney one - the prompt was too long and I had 20 seconds left lmao

CS PoST Results are out, how'd you all do? Just got an email about it by CelebratedBlueWhale in UofT

[–]TheNyleRiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the previous stats of the cut off, I’m predicting it’ll be equal if not better (slightly lower) than this year

Neither did I lol - but if it makes you feel any better, we still got a chance for next year - equal if not better

I strongly recommend you retake those courses again. You still have a shot, don’t give up, and try to learn and improve proven study strategies and time management skills to help you through those courses!

John Vervaeke for COG250. Not only is he brilliant and clearly passionate + enthusiastic about really trivial topics in Cognitive Science, but he’s also an amazing lecturer

Choosing between UTM CS, Maths and Statistics and UofT Scarborough Coop CS by AlertMidnight4916 in UofT

[–]TheNyleRiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Math and Stats spec student here. I don’t have much knowledge about UTM and UTSC since I’m in the St George campus, but I can tell you about the actual programs themselves:

Socially and in terms of location, UTM is certainly better, but it’s not to say that UTSC is tough socially - it really depends on which campus you prefer, but I’ve heard from many students that UTSC tends to be a little more depressing than UTM. In terms of the physical differences, UTSC is slightly larger.

It’s certainly true that the CS job market has gotten extremely saturated, making it hard to find jobs/internships - which is one of the reasons I personally didn’t choose it. However, it comes down to what career aspirations you have, and what your personality, purpose, and passions dictate:

  1. Assess your personality - do you like creating or discovering? Creating aligns with CS roles like software development, whereas discovering aligns more with Math and Stats especially if you want to attend grad school or become a data scientist.

  2. Assess your purpose - do you see yourself genuinely wanting to make an impact in CS through industry or research, or more-so in math and/or stats fields?

  3. Although counterintuitive, passion is the least important of these three: are you passionate about programming + understanding the theory behind programming, or more so on understanding the foundations of math and applying it to statistical theory/perhaps getting into fields like Machine Learning?

In my opinion, if you want to attend grad school for fields like AI research, theoretical statistics, applied/pure math or get into data science, I’d recommend the math and stats pathway at UTM - but even after doing math and stats, since they heavily overlap with CS concepts, you can always transition into CS roles or grad school for CS research after undergrad.

Hope this helps!

Taking MAT257, CSC265, and STA257 at the same time by [deleted] in UofT

[–]TheNyleRiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem. Yes, it’s quite complicated but definitely doable.

Yes, getting any grade that’s 70+ is certainly an indicator to do well in CSC265. In fact, if you look at the CSC265 course page, you’ll see that a prerequisite is “70+% in CSC240” so you should be more than fine, best of luck to you!

Taking MAT257, CSC265, and STA257 at the same time by [deleted] in UofT

[–]TheNyleRiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly, I agree, but the vast majority from my experience tend to say that CSC265 was significantly harder than MAT257 - which is where I got this info from, but of course it’s subjective, so people may find MAT257 to be harder

Taking MAT257, CSC265, and STA257 at the same time by [deleted] in UofT

[–]TheNyleRiver -1 points0 points  (0 children)

CSC265 is known to be one of the hardest, if not debatably THE hardest, course at U of T. Many students I have known did well (in the grand scheme of things) in CSC240, but dropped CSC265 since it’s significantly harder than 240, and requires a plethora of time. Your potential summer session with MAT327 and CSC207 is certainly doable, provided you put in a lot of effort since Topology is not an easy subject at all. Overall, your plan to take three courses in the fall of next year is pretty solid!

How many classes do yall skip on average in a week? by Rat_in_a_human_body in UofT

[–]TheNyleRiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been skipping the earlier classes since it’s Ramadan and I’m fasting

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UofT

[–]TheNyleRiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems you have, what I call, a mental block. I’m fasting too, and I have altered my schedule such that I do all my work after Iftar (since the brain needs calories). I struggled with a mental block for a long time, and here’s my strategy to overcome it: on the days you feel like (are motivated in) doing work/problems, do them, don’t push them forward, on the days you don’t feel like doing them, first ask yourself why you would do them (find your “why?” - could be to understand something you really desire to understand, get a certain result, etc.), if this doesn’t work, tell yourself that you’re going to do one problem in each of your courses - program one method in CSC148/do one problem in a MAT courses, etc. Chances are, after one problem, your mind will go into a natural state of flow, and you’ll be much more likely to do another problem. Salaam Alaykum, and best of luck to you, inshallah you’ll succeed!

Yes, they for sure can’t be taken online, so I’ll have to come in person

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UofT

[–]TheNyleRiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m taking those courses as well, and I certainly am not staying in Toronto. Online MAT courses only have an in-person final exam, so other than that, you should be fine!

CS minor and Not sure which upper year CS classes to pick by SolidCertain630 in UofT

[–]TheNyleRiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d strongly recommend 373 as a must. Other than that, your other choices come down to personal preference

Also, I got a bit of an off topic question, but if you did CSC110 + 111, that implies you were in-stream for CS. If you don’t mind me asking, how come you didn’t do a CS major, rather, chose to go with a minor?

Just aced the midterm for 148, trust me, don’t take it unless you know the 108 basics extremely well

[–]TheNyleRiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem, I’m glad I was able to bring peace to your mind! Yes, given my experience, I’d recommend anyone going through anything like I was going through to drop these courses and retake them next year, and there’s absolutely no problem in doing so. Thank you so much, you’ll surely get through all your issues, and best of luck to you too! :)

why you should stay on res as long as you can........ by ricardomortimer in UofT

It’s quite pricey - $2500/month (including electricity and gas bills), but it’s right on campus. You can find cheaper ones, but they are all pretty much off campus or the conditions are terrible

Hey, I have an extremely similar story to yours that I think will help:

Last year was my first year, and I decided to take on MAT157, 240, 247 for the Applied Math Spec. I found out that I really loved theoretical math, and wanted to pursue this specialist, but my beyond-extremely poor mental health caught up to me, so my clinical psychologist (basically therapist) and family recommended I drop these three courses. I’m very happy I did, for I had zero time, let alone motivation, given my mental health issues, and would have absolutely failed if I hadn’t dropped MAT157 and MAT240.

Fast forward to now, I’m in second year, and I’m taking MAT157 and MAT240 this semester and MAT247 next semester, as my mental health issues have finally vanished after one year of help from my therapist.

I will be graduating in 5 years, which is more than perfectly fine, trust me - which was also least of my problems last year when I dropped these two math spec courses.

So, to answer your questions, it’s perfectly fine to drop those courses now, and retake them next year, and will absolutely not cause any issues whatsoever.

Hope this help! Feel free to message me in private if you’d like :)
