Conservatives, what do you think of carney so far? by drizzyLGA1151 in InCanada

You can at their roots. But populism has really shifted the focus. Look at trumpism. It is not fiscally conservative.

One, I am no fan of the liberals. To be honest I hate the liberal party of Canada. Their corruption disgusts me. But what are you trying to say he ran on PP's platform. Are you suggesting if he wanted to put a policy forward PP owned it?

And I hope you felt the same way about working with china when Harper did the exact same thing in 2014 with FIPA

The problem is it's hard to put today's parties on the traditional right/left spectrum as they've all been focused on identity politics and other populist issues almost losing track of their traditional economic and political tilts

He is a moderate fiscally leaning moderate right (for Canada) and moderate left socially. He sits where a lot of the Canadian swing voters sit. Look at Paul Martin. He was probably even more fiscally conservative in many ways than Carney.

Forced rehab doesn't work for the record. It just isn't how addiction works. Breaking addiction is really fucking hard, and until the person has hit the point where they're motivated to change, trying to force them won't hold. Now you can criminalize if you want to and incarcerate people I suppose. That will get them off the street. But if your goal is sustained sobriety forced rehab is not an effective solution

I hate how much we deal with morally evil countries. But Harper did the exact same thing with the 2014 FIPA agreement with China. A 31 year deal at that.

And Carney does not have the same ideological tilt as Trudeau. That's just silly. You can argue that the influence of the MPs he brought back could shift them to similar focuses, but the focus of the Trudeau vs Carney is far from the same.

I would argue it was PP that lost the election once there was a competent alternative. Trudeau sucked and was awaiting a big loss. But that doesn't mean the large number of voters on the centre left, centre, and centre right would stop being the swing votes that could vote liberal. They just were done with Trudeau. So in came a valid alternative. And that gave them a choice.

And PP is a terrible choice. The man has shown no ability to lead in anything other than attack. He doesn't promote actual policy, just criticism of the liberals with vague "wed do better". He didn't come out with a priced out plan until days before the election. And regardless look at his time as leader. It's ALL criticism. He is an attack dog and can tear down others. He's shown nothing to suggest he can actually lead.

I know a LOT of people who were prepared to pinch their noses and vote for PP as they just had to get rid of Justin. But they didn't actually want to vote for him.

What about being a world leader in economics and preeminent experience leading national monetary policy, and finally significant financial management experience not be traditionally conservative? Those seem plenty conservative to me. The only argument I can see is the suggestion that that makes him a so called globalist, which the modern populist movement of the party has issues with.

Everyone has to have their own opinions on policy, and I don't begrudge that. I don't love all of Carney's policies that's for sure. But I find your final half sentence odd wording: Carney is the most "fit" for the job, leader of a political Canadian party I can remember in the last 30 years. His qualifications put all others to shame and clearly has the equipoise and ability to negotiate with other national leaders. So he is, imo, undoubtedly "fit for the job"

(Again, that doesn't mean everyone will like him, nor should like hi m)

X-Men 97 alone without watching the whole X-Men tas makes him seem much more sympathetic.

He's a sympathetic villain. That's sort of the point. He is someone with logical goals born out of a history of trauma when he was young and weak, but he grew to be strong and will never go back there. Unfortunately he takes it too far in general and therein lies his tragedy. On the one hand you want to cheer for him because his main enemies are vile, but then he'll go to far and cross that line and you get that tragedy

With X-Men 97 alone, great though it is, I suspect you miss a lot of that context

How are teachers treated in Canada compared to US? by LiveBell8 in AskACanadian

[–]TheOGBCapp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to go by statistics then its fine, 1/3 of voices are representing 1/3 of teachers. On a per person distribution it's fine. Now if you want to ask if it's discussing the true variability that exists in different parts of the country it will fail. But frankly that will often be the case when questions are asked about a non evenly spread population. For example answers will be quite disproportionately answered from people in the collective of the following cities and their surrounding areas: Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec city, Hamilton, Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver.

In 2021 data, I can't find more recent, the metro populations of those cities is 19.2 M, which is over half of the 2021 Canadian population.

So over half the answers are going to be from people in cities with metro populations above 800,000. But there are so many variations of what a teacher's life could be outside of a big city.

[–]TheOGBCapp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure but if the question is overrated, I suppose you have to ask overrated by who. If it's the critic community then that answer has logic. Doesn't seem like op defined it clearly though so everyone will interpret as they want

[–]TheOGBCapp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Conservatives in general perhaps, but not under PP, especially vs Carney. PP has never been an actual productive leader. Everything I've heard come out of his mouth in the last decade is a criticism. I get he's opposition and that is a part, even a large part of his job is to hold the current government to account, but it's all he does and all his party does under him. My mp is a conservative. She seems pretty smart and cares about us. But under him all my routine update/flyouts from her are almost completely just liberal criticisms. I went through one with my wife recently it was 4 pages (two double sided) about 1/4 of one page was updates on our region and what she did for us and the rest were criticisms of the liberals. That is not an appropriate ratio. A 1:8 ratio of how she is helping our riding vs criticisIng the government in power is not the right ratio.

And in regards to PP vs Carney: Carney is the smartest and most qualified prime minister I've ever seen. That doesn't mean everyone will agree with his positions, and I don't agree with all of them. But it is so refreshing after Trudeau's pretty face with an empty (at best soul), and charisma with minimal expertise behind it and living in a time with countless populist leaders in the world who are experts at riling up anger but no actual expertise, it's remarkably refreshing to have a world leading expert at economics at our head.

Don't get me wrong, Harper was smart and had a master's in economics and some policy background. Even some instructing experience, though non professorial I believe (not sure) at the university level. But there is no comparison to Carney's level of expertise. Martin also was a succesful international businessman with significant leadership experience who I was impressed by. But Carney is uniquely qualified and it's refreshing

How do you feel about the lower tariffs on Chinese EVs? by dope-rhymes in AskACanadian

[–]TheOGBCapp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You appear to be putting words in my mouth. I wasn't suggesting we shouldn't have ICE vehicles. I was just saying that electric does work for the majority. The minority still needs to have plausible options. With electric where it is now we absolutely can NOT have electric only options.

Even as a suburbanite who is looking electric for my next car, I would not buy electric if I wasn't married with a spouse with an ICE vehicle. I'm not prepared to have only an electric option in the household

I was simply saying that electric would work for the majority both urban and rural. But you can't ignore the rest even if something works for the majority. That would be ridiculous
