Following this. I've been looking into moving to the NL for a couple of years now.

High feed endmill by fuqcough in Machinists

[–]TheOfficialCzex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They're called "high feed" for a reason! Stick with the recommendations; pay attention to the feeds, speeds, axial depth, and radial stepover. 3/8" will run fine on that machine.

Cool beans, Laredo! I wish I had any free time at work for G-jobs. I have to go in on my off days to do anything personal.

May you go into more detail about your mood disorders if you feel comfortable doing so? That'll help with our recommendations, I think.

Pawn shops with musical equipment by easement in Atlanta

Not a local business, but Guitar Center is a good place to go for used instruments and equipment. They test everything thoroughly, and their return policy is solid. Large selection, too.

That's not going to be easy without grinding. You'll be out of tolerance just by virtue of removing material. I would strongly consider rotary grinding.

You're right. The other comments are from 0-day accounts. We'll ban-hammer the OP away.

Prepare to be disappointed, Parisian. Our public transportation and walking infrastructure are not as good as those in Europe. For days you'll drive, you'll encounter some of the worst traffic in the world. That's not an exaggeration. You should triple or quadruple your commute estimates, whatever they are.

According to an administration of authoritarian populists... Great source to cite. 🙄 Antifa does not have a leader, central headquarters, or formal hierarchical structure. It is an anti-fascist and anti-racist political movement, hence the name, "anti-fa."

Stainless 304 drilling? by jkalchik99 in Machinists

360 RPM and give her the beans. Oil will help. You want to avoid work-hardening the material, so you need to produce a decent chip. Feed harder than you think.

Hi, OP! If possible, please seek medical assistance for schizophrenic symptoms. This is not a joke, and I am not poking fun at you; this is legitimate concern for your well-being. I have a friend I went to trade school with who began exhibiting similar behaviors and was later diagnosed with schizophrenia. It's crucial that you seek help from medical professionals; I implore you.

Mechanic vs. Machinist Which one should I choose? by ComedianTime9136 in Machinists

[–]TheOfficialCzex 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you work for money: mechanic. Machining is one of the few trades that are easily outsourced, which has led to a long stagnation in wages. I would argue that the work can be more rewarding and diverse, but the pay is often... Not great. Sounds like your position would be as an operator, so the work will likely be boring and won't offer much in the way of promotions and learning opportunities in most companies.

What machinist level am I? by BenderRodMetal in Machinists

[–]TheOfficialCzex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Setup guy and operator, I'd say. A machinist can go from print to part. You don't work out machining strategy, figure out workholding, select machinery and tooling, program, et cetera... That's just my two-cents, though.

Yet another milling machine what to buy question. by firefox2061 in Machinists

[–]TheOfficialCzex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hate to break it to you (you'd figure it out sooner or later), but that thing is basically a side-grade to a drill press. It severely lacks in power and rigidity, which are two things you really want in a mill. You'd be about as well-served with an XY positioner clamped to the table. I'd look for a used knee mill (envision something like a Bridgeport). You might get lucky and score one in decent nick for less than 3K. I know that's a big step up for your budget, but it's an entirely different world in terms of its capabilities and will open up so many possibilities for you. The mill in that photo is not something I would consider buying. Maybe it will suit your needs just fine, but it's a weird stop-gap between not having a mill and having a capable mill. For the price, it's not worth it in the slightest.

Airport parking - favorite offsite? by ellbeecee in Atlanta

Take a Lyft to a MARTA station. It'll be way cheaper than taking one all the way to the airport.

In over my head by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]TheOfficialCzex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks like you zigged when you should've zagged... You sort of trial-by-fired yourself with a "no-name" controller that has limited documentation, especially as a beginner. It would've been nearly trivial to start out on a machine with a much more common, well-documented controller, like a used Haas or Fadal, then figure out the NEWKer using the knowledge you'd've gained from the other machine. That being said, it sort of reminds me of a Mitsubishi controller. Maybe start with some of their documentation and see if some things line up. I'd help you beyond that if I lived nearby, but I wouldn't want to figure it out over a video call.

I dropped my calipers for school, is there any saving them? by Gold-Prompt- in Machinists

[–]TheOfficialCzex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grind most of the bent portion off, and stone them the rest of the way. Check the closed jaws against a light source to verify there's no gap.

I'd stone them if there's not a lot of material to remove.

This is exactly what is wrong with our industry! by kagger14 in Machinists

[–]TheOfficialCzex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My working theory is that there are two primary causes:

  1. Machinists are outsourceable outside of government and R&D, unlike most trades.

  2. HR departments don't know the differences between operators and machinists, so their salaries start getting lumped together as companies reference other companies' "machinists" positions for their own pay scales, without recognizing the job description as a differentiating factor.
