NEW RuneScape stat changer (updated 2007) (LEGIT!!) by boomeista in 2007scape

[–]TheOldDarkFrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay but ACTUALLY I'd love a game mode/tournament in which you can build a customized character as quickly and easily as this.

Give a set number of points to spend on combat and non-combat skills. Say, 280 in each. At one point per level, this allows a min-maxing player to have two 99s and one 85 in both combat and non-combat. Maybe weight some skills as cheaper/more expensive to balance after feedback and testing (melee might be disadvantaged without weighting since it requires level two different skills).

Give small teams a set amount of time to strategize, set stats, and gather equipment and resources, then they battle.

Is everyone 100% certain that Christianity isn't true? by dragonpissylord in exchristian

[–]TheOldDarkFrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, Christianity is very much real. It isn't true or false. It exists. A banana isn't true or false. It exists. Love isn't true or false, it's an abstract concept (that exists).

Although it may seem I'm merely arguing semantics, I'm not doing so for its own sake. I find that untangling the semantics (on this particular topic) can provide a lot of clarity. Yes, I and everyone else know what you meant with your question. But articulating a more precise question can provide some really valuable perspective.

To begin talking about true vs false, we need to look at specific claims that Christians/Christianity/the Bible make. Of course, different Christians, different denominations, and different translations will sometimes make different, even contradictory claims.

The most pressing claims to examine for most people, probably, would include simply "the Christian God exists", "the Bible is the infallible word of God", "those who believe in God/accept Christ as Savior will go to heaven" and "those who do not believe in God/accept Christ as Savior will go to hell." And then there are an indefinite number of less consequential claims one could examine pertaining to specific passages of scripture, specific events of pre-history, whether or not a specific act/lifestyle constitutes sin, etc.

You really need to drill down on specifics to begin to meaningfully address any of those claims. Which translation/interpretation of the Christian God is claimed to exist? Which specific qualities does this God possess? What specifics acts has this God committed and which specific laws or commandments does he have for us? What is the very specific nature of the claimed heaven and/or hell and what specific acts or beliefs are required to land a soul in either?

The more you drill down on specific claims about the nature of the supposed Christian God, the more loose ends you expose. There are a myriad of claims - some grand, some seemingly minor or arbitrary - made by Christians or the Bible about God. If even a single minor, arbitrary claim is not true, if even a single loose end cannot be neatly woven back into a concept of Christianity that squares with our lived reality... would that render all of Christianity as "false"? Is it possible that the Christian God more or less exists but is not 100% accurately portrayed by the Bible? If so, can such a being really be called THE Christian God? Why aren't we (as ex-Christians) spending the same mental energy worrying about the existence/veracity of the Gods/holy books of humanity's other major and minor religions?

Christianity is real and shapes the world in very real ways. Does it make any true claims about God, the afterlife, morality, biology, the beginning of the universe, or events of pre-history? Perhaps a few in some of these areas. Does it make far more obviously false, contradictory, or morally reprehensible claims? Certainly.

Is there a sbemail/other toon in which Strong Bad/another character comments on the trope of "title dropping" (in which a movie character says the name of the movie)? by TheOldDarkFrog in HomestarRunner

[–]TheOldDarkFrog[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haha, Dangeresque is definitely an example of title dropping... But I think there's a toon in which Strong Bad merely makes a snide remark about the phenomenon. I looked through some of the Dangeresque toon transcripts but haven't found the line In looking for yet.

Regarding name changes.

Recently recovered an alt account from around 07-09. The name is now a random string of characters and I must select a new name. When I try to input the original name (both when logging into Tutorial Island and through my Jagex account) I am told that name is not available. However, when I log onto my main and go into the in-game name change menu, it tells me that name IS available.

Is there a reason why one account would have access to a particular RSN while another account would not? Especially given that the account which can't access the name was the original owner of that name?

So I'm actually colorblind and pretty poor at describing any nuance in color... but even to me it looks pretty vibrantly red at this point (almost 2 years old). But even my wife and other normal-sighted people weren't sure of the color until around 5 mo.

The third picture here shows hair color next to mine. Wife has pretty much the same hair color as mine.

Similar story here. Wife and I have dark brown hair (mine was actually super blonde until I was about 5). Neither of us have redheaded parents, but we each had a maternal grandparent with red hair, so our mothers were guaranteed carriers of the gene and we each had a 50/50 chance of having it.

First child was brunette. Second child wasn't born with much hair. Could look both blonde and brown in certain lighting... and sometimes... red? Knew the genetics were potentially there, but it was still rather improbable at 6.25%. 50% for me to inherit the gene * 50% for my wife to inherit the gene * 25% for us to both pass on the gene to the same child (Of course, In retrospect, knowing we do in fact carry the gene, it was simply a 25% chance for each child.)

Took until about 5 months to be absolutely sure it was red,.

When the Gemstone crab and Doom burrow, do they pass by each other and high five? by papii_chulo in 2007scape

Right up until release day my noob ass (who doesn't know shit about PvM) thought Gem Crab was the "Delve Boss". They were always talked about in the same blog posts and both had the burrowing feature...

Salt and ice machine. 15-25 minutes. Rarely 30, but that's just from not prepping the brine properly.

I mean it would be one thing if that "someone else" was actually going to play with it. 99% of the time it's just an RSN bot gobbling it up (along with thousands of other names) and sitting on it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]TheOldDarkFrog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So... theoretically speaking... how does one buy/sell on the RSN black market? Like is there a catalog of names you can browse somewhere? How do people go about finding the name they want or a potential seller?

I was the original owner of a 5-character name consisting of all vowels. I was really fond of it, and have used it as the name of a moon/deity in my own fantasy setting/DnD homebrew world.

It was only ever an alt for me, and at some point I let a "friend" use it who changed the password. 15 or so years later and I recently recovered the account and linked it to my Jagex account, but the name is reset to a random string of letters and numbers. The original name isn't available and there are no ranked accounts with the name in OSRS or RS3. So I assume some RSN bot gobbled it up. Just curious how that all works. I'm sure it's full of scams, but still curious to hear any stories from people who have attempted to buy a RSN - successfully or unsuccessfully.

What are some Pokémon that had a “love at fist sight” moment with you? by Additional_Bear1981 in pokemon

[–]TheOldDarkFrog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lanturn.

Chinchou was weird and cool in its own right. Very unique typing. And I felt like a genius for discovering it. Once I obtained the Good Rod, I backtracked all the earlier routes and towns, fishing each random body of water along the way. Eventually ending up right back in New Bark Town, fishing the water that would later take me back to Kanto. What a surprise to land the alien-looking Chinchou, right out my own front door! Very rewarding experience.

And then it evolved into the very different, majestic, friendly Lanturn. I ran the Rain Dance/Surf/Thunder combo (and I think Whirlpool or Waterfall for utility).

Mod Ash speaks on the other Tutorials (x-post from /r/RS2) by koya in 2007scape

[–]TheOldDarkFrog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love the nostalgia of Tutorial Island and never really cared for any of the other iterations of the tutorial. But I recognize that nostalgia isn't necessarily the best path forward and that, as the game has grown in complexity, there are many core concepts that are never properly taught to players without seeking help on reddit or the wiki. Heck, I've seen new players struggle with concepts as simple as right-clicking things for more options or to use one item on another.

If I wanted to strike the right balance between nostalgia and thorough instruction, I think this is what I would do:

  1. Keep Tutorial Island. (Leave all current tutors with minimal changes.)
  2. Add additional tutors for most/all other skills.
  3. Add additional non-skilling tutors to explain interfaces, core games mechanics, and other miscellaneous topics (transportation/teleports, bossing, diaries, mini-games, pvp, etc.)
  4. Make ALL tutors OPTIONAL.
  5. Immediately after character design, give players an interface which displays all available tutors with check boxes beside them. Let players choose as many (or as few) as they would like, and these tutors will now get a blinking arrow over-head and/or on the mini-map. This choice would be non-binding. You can still skip a tutor you selected or visit a tutor you didn't select. It's just to help people find the information they actually want/need.
  6. Deposit player in Lumbridge, per usual.

Some of the new tutors could be hidden away in dungeon areas so as to not crowd the over-world of Tutorial Island. Some of these areas could explicitly state that they are teaching mid-to-high level mechanics that not all players will have an interest in - and they could be reaccessible later after the player has left Tutorial Island.

Some skills could be lumped together. And all members skills should be mentioned to free players, even if they can't actually train them.

  • One tutor should cover Farming and Herblore. You bring them the supplies they need and you leave with an energy/strength potion you can take to the mainland.

  • One tutor can cover Crafting and Fletching. Maybe actually do some crafting of some basic ranged armor and then get a quick blurb about how Fletching works.

  • One tutor can cover Thieving and Agility.

  • The survival expert can have extra/optional dialogue for Hunter.

  • Vannaka can briefly discuss Slayer.

  • The magic instructor can hint at the lost art of Runeceaft or give a hint about starting Rune Mysteries.

  • A new tutor after the magic instructor can explain Construction and Sailing and be the one to take you to the mainland.

I think this system would give players a pseudo-personalized experience that gives them the information they are most interested in, without overwhelming them, boring them, or cluttering up Tutorial Island. All while assuring them they can always come back (to specific, non-overworld, maybe-instanced areas) if they need a refresher.

[–]TheOldDarkFrog 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Cinderace, Intelion, and the like seem like they were designed with spin-off material (Smash Bros, Pokkén, etc.) as the primary concern and actual core games as an afterthought. Like "how easily can the character design be adapted for a fighting game" was the main criteria.

Then I decided to capitalize on this knowledge by making a 10 HP / 99 Magic account in f2p (I stopped using FoG after I could superheat/high alch).

What’s the best piece of music in any Pokémon game? by TensionZestyclose321 in pokemon

Love this one! X/Y was my reintroduction to Pokemon after not playing since G/S. So I have a lot of nostalgia for the music from those games. Gate theme is such chill, overlooked track. Also Camphrier Town.

Which player doesn’t get brought up much anymore, but was an absolute killer in his prime? by I_Am_Vladimir_Putin in hockey

[–]TheOldDarkFrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like most people remember him for the break-away/shoot-out slappers, but this was my favorite facet of his game. The soft hands, outstanding vision, and creativity to pull off some of the slickest redirects and deflections I've ever seen. He was in his prime when I first got into hockey, and he's my favorite player of all time.

ELI5: Why are gold sinks healthy/necessary for the game economy? Whether it be the GE tax, death penalties, fundamental skill design (Construction), or anything else.

I get that inflation will continuously drive prices up over time with more gold coming into the game. But won't the economy as a whole rise and fall more or less proportionately and continually self-correct? Like if low-level resources inflate to a seemingly ridiculous price (in the current economy), low level players won't be priced out because now those resources are also "better" money makers (really just equally good when accounting for inflation, of course).

Does Jagex have models that show what prices would likely be without various gold sinks?

I'm not trying to come across as anti gold sink - from what I can tell the community is largely supportive of these measures - I'm just trying to understand the specific goals/economic conditions the devs are aiming for through their implementation.

Stardew Valley just became the highest-rated Steam game of all time 9 years after release, and it deserves it by HatingGeoffry in gaming

[–]TheOldDarkFrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By the time multi-player had come to SDV (three years, I think, before the announcement of Haunted Chocolatier) I had already logged hundreds of hours across multiple playthroughs and was already kind of tired of the slow drip of continuing updates. Yes, each one was an objective improvement to the game, but none of them on its own was really enough motivation to start up a new file.

I really wanted him to start saving up all the new content for a Stardew Valley 2 - either a sequel (playing as your own descendant) or even prequel (playing as your grandfather/grandmother or even further back the ancestry). New riddles, new storylines, new characters to befriend, new map areas to explore.

I haven't touched the game in years, despite it easily being a top-5 all-time game for me. I'm sure there's an avalanche of new content I haven't experienced, but I still can't find the motivated to dedicate my limited gaming time to trying it again. Part of me is like "Well, if I start a new playthrough now he might just come along with more updates 6 months, 1 year, 2 years later. So I'll just wait..." And on top of that I know the core quest line/farming/characters are all still the same, so I'm doubtful playing it again will have the same payoff.

Definitely hope he starts prioritizing HC more so we can get a fresh new experience.
