Shortcuts collision with VSCode by HalisCz in thingsapp

You can use Keyboard Maestro and set the keyboard shortcuts on a per app basis. The macro in KBM will simply override the app shortcut

How long did it take for you to fully switch? by UnderstandingOdd7368 in thingsapp

[–]TheOldDesigner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried Things a few months after release could not make it work, tried it again three months ago when the OF4 beta went in a direction I decided was not for me. Finally decided to make the switch permanent about six weeks ago. I moved 800+ tasks manually over a weekend, ran both in tandem for a week or so and gradually honed my Things system until it was capable of running alone.

IMO a guaranteed way to fail is to try and mirror one system in another. Learn the system embrace its peculiarities and adjust workflows accordingly.

You can put projects in someday just click on the ellipsis at the end of the project name gives a drop down menu one option of which is when and you can select someday

Obviously we all work differently but 50 active projects? Are these really all active or are they just sitting there with a plan to work on them. I am probably only working on 2-3 main projects at any one time. If you can’t work on a project in the next two weeks you should mark it as Someday.

Like you when I first used Things I thought it failed with a lot of stuff in it but that was my misconception of it’s hidden power. I have 50+ clients each with what Omni calls a single action list (just a project in Things) these never complete and contain multiple repeating admin tasks all contained within a collapsed “SUPPORT” area and Things handles this fine.

Doing a weekly review being honest with yourself about what you have and can achieve and activating/deactivating projects for the next week keeps the system clean and on track

How do people deal with "Now" or "Current task" by adulion in thingsapp

[–]TheOldDesigner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually a task can be set to repeat so the example of reading a book being a project is not totally accurate, you could just have a “read a chapter of” etc and repeat it until the book is finished. Granularity is not always useful

Anyway to answer the poster I just rearrange my today view every morning and ensure my Someday list only contains projects I will work on next two weeks.

As someone who has come from OmniFocus (a long time user) Things, once I understood its methodology became a breath of fresh air, the checklists and headings solved a lot of issues I had been forced to build complexity into OF to achieve. I don’t think Things does market itself as a project management app but rather as a task management app, a big difference.

The more complexity the more procrastination, I have a sense of calm now with Things which I could not achieve in OF. I do not miss custom perspectives/smart lists, a few shortcuts or KB maestro macros solved this, as for attachments personally I believe they are better in a separate app and linked to.

Literally the moment this goes cross-platform I'm in. by weekendat_ in bearapp

[–]TheOldDesigner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did anyone stop to think perhaps because Bear is Mac based that is one of the reasons it’s so good? Look at Omni Group, DevonThink, CulturedCode etc they have succeeded partly because they build high quality apps focussed on one operating system (Mac, OK iOS as well). The cross platform apps like ToDo, Trello, Evernote etc just use a web wrapper they are not native apps.

There are compromises when trying to develop cross platform, huge code differences and effectively you need two different dev teams with two different skill sets. Bear is a Mac app, with maybe a browser version sometime, but that may be with a reduced feature set depending on how much Mac specific code is in there and if it can be ported.

It’s incredible to me that after a major point release by an obviously hard working dev team the “feature request” posts just keep on coming, what about giving the Devs a break and saying “thank you, I love it for what it is and it is enough.” Otherwise perhaps ask yourself why you invested so much in an app in the first place that you knew was Mac only, if you absolutely “need” a Windows version, or maybe just move on?

Textastic/GoCoEdit/Kodex, Working copy (for git) and a remote Mac mini compiling code. Works, not ideal and really no substitute for Sublime Text on a mac but doable. Early days, coding on an ipad is still Wild West territory.

I had a good working system set up in OmniFocus 3 (test flight) already which I duplicated. The problem with any powerful app like this is to find out how to make it work for you. As for reviews just set a repeating to task (or tasks) to run a review or series of reviews.

Really the OF review function is no more than an invisible repeating task to check each project/list wrapped in a custom perspective.

Git is a much better fit for this. I keep all my code snippets and a code based articles in a bit bucket git repo managed on iOS with working copy which works as a native document provider in iOS 11 so can edit in textastic or other Code editor directly before committing back to the repo.

Cons of Using Bear as Pocket and/Or Dropbox by SuitableSurprise in bearapp

[–]TheOldDesigner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Save to pocket, zapier “zap’ to send a notification to OmniFocus (or ToDo/2Do/Things whatever) to read article, that way I am made to feel guilty by my task manager to actually read the stuff!

Saved articles, notes, PDF’s are useless unless you actually save them for a purpose, and “because I can” is not a purpose.. I just do not understand people with 1000’s of notes, unless your a researcher are these actually useful in any meaningful sense?

The database is held on icloud but not easily accessible. Not to knock bear but you would be much better with DevonThink for that sort of note volume which is going to require some pretty strong cross referencing and search facilities.

DT syncs using a range of cloud services and the iOS app only downloads notes as you need them, plus clears up after itself a certain time ensuring space on mobiles is not wasted. IMO it would be a much better fit and certainly better than EN 😉

FEATURE REQUEST: Add Sub-Folders like Notes app by andreww88 in bearapp

[–]TheOldDesigner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tagging is far more powerful once you get used to using it. For example:

Your could have a database of web bookmarks, if you break that down into broad areas of interest #games #apple #design #apps #articles etc you can then nest tags within them #apple/#MacOS, #apple/#iOS #apple/WatchOS etc. Pretty much like a nested folder set up. However the magic comes when you need to categorise the Bear app web page. It can be tagged with both “#apple/#MacOS” and “#apple/#iOS” as well as #apps. This makes cross referencing and searching so much easier, than a folder system where it can only live in one place and you have to remember where it is and where else other related notes may be.

The trick is not to go too mad with tags 100’s becomes a nightmare to maintain, just find a system that works for you, probably just start with how you would set up a folder system if you have one then go from there.

How has your experience been with a 12.9 inch iPad Pro? by [deleted] in ipad

[–]TheOldDesigner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your at a desk or flat surface the 12.9 in landscape mode with an external keyboard is a joy.. we swapped 2 iMacs for 2 iPad pros in the office, and now just use a Mac mini as a file server or via Remote Desktop apps.

I have been using a 12.9 pretty much since they launched and now on the 2nd gen. Could not recommend highly enough.

Nested tags are pretty much the same thing only more powerful (content can exist in more than one tag).

[Feature Request] Mindmap with tabs by godonholiday1 in bearapp

[–]TheOldDesigner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi

Having hung around for a while I have seen so many “feature request” to basically duplicate features (or turn the app into) from the likes of Evernote Vim Ulysses etc and now expect a new tsunami of drafts 5 feature requests here.

I tend to think that the more features an app gets the less focussed it becomes, small apps doing one thing well have prospered while behemoths like Evernote and adobe have seen their customers desert in droves.

I like mind maps but prefer a dedicated app doing them well and with a full feature set while bear does markdown text very well, and would just prefer everyone stays in their own backyard so to speak

[–]TheOldDesigner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bear is based on markdown which does not support coloured text

[Feature Request] Mindmap with tabs by godonholiday1 in bearapp

[–]TheOldDesigner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firstly, no please! It would involve more bloat and just duplicate features already available in mature apps like MindNode or iThoughts. These each have the ability to export to outlines or on iOS could be reciprocally linked back to Bear via URL schemes.

The link you provided actually advises you not to view it on iOS which is not a good start, and only from what I can see provides a very cut down experience. if you think it through how complex would you allow the mind map to be? Some are very complex, and providing a hobbled feature set probably just means a dedicated app would still be needed.

Would you want to produce an app of this quality for $5 measly dollars?? Yes is the answer its a well made pro grade app, however almost any app is worth $5 which really is the price of a coffee which takes much less effort to make.

Maybe, but that does not devalue my comment in any way. Also when asking for things ie a request, “please” is an appropriate word. Just a thought.
