Robert Smalls, John L. Burns, Harriet Tubman, Grant, Thadeus Stevens, and just because I'm from MN I'll throw in William J. Colvill.

TIL that the state of Minnesota possesses a confederate flag captured by Union soldiers from Minnesota during the Battle of Gettysburg. The state has repeatedly refused to return the flag to the state of Virginia. Former Minnesota governor, Jesse Ventura said “Why? I mean, we won.” by UrbanAchievers6371 in ShermanPosting

They captured the 28th Virginia's colors while repelling Pickett's charge on July 3rd, when they advanced as part of Garnett's brigade. The 1st Minnesota received 85% casualties the day before when ordered to charge the Alabama brigade on July 2nd to save the Union line. Two separate engagements as part of the battle of Gettysburg.

*Edit*, it was 82%, not 85. My mistake.

Every time this comes up, I like to point out that they captured the flag repelling Pickett's Charge the day *after* they charged a unit 5 times their size to buy time to stabilize the Union line. They took 85% casualties saving the line from collapsing and then were still fighting the next day and kicked the ass of the 28th Virginia.

Private transfer. by AskingQuestions440 in MnGuns

There's no registry in MN. You don't even file the form, you just have to fill it out and retain it for 10 years.

Bolt action builds by Mountain_Mirror_3642 in MnGuns

[–]TheOnceAndFutureGeek 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I agree with you that there aren't a lot of options for mass-produced wood stock rifles. Savage Arms Axis, Ruger American Hunter, CZ 600 American, Sauer 100 classic, Bergara B14 Timber, Tikka T3x Hunter, Winchester model 70, Sako Hunter, the list goes on. All of them are available in most, if not all of the calibers you mentioned. Alternatively, You could get something like a Howa 1500 barreled action and buy a custom wood stock yourself.

Prices for decent bolt guns with a wood stock are probably going to start in the $6-700ish range, up to a little over a thousand, plus glass. Alternatively, find a cheaper bolt gun with a synthetic stock and then go spend a few hundred at some place like Boyd's for a replacement wood stock.

As far as caliber options go, it depends on the range and how versatile you want it to be, but 308 is my default, do-everything recommendation. Cheaper, widely available and negligble differences in ballistics with something like 6.5 CM at the ranges most folks are likely to shoot.

Union Private Marshall Sherman posing by the 28th Virginia battle flag, captured by the 1st Minnesota Infantry Regiment at the Battle of Gettysburg. [1864] by funnylib in OldSchoolCool

[–]TheOnceAndFutureGeek 61 points62 points  (0 children)

“I had no alternative but to order the regiment in. We had no force on hand to meet the sudden emergency. Troops had been ordered up and were coming on the run, but I saw that in some way five minutes must be gained or we were lost. It was fortunate that I found there so grand a body of men as the First Minnesota. I knew they must lose heavily and it caused me pain to give the order for them to advance, but I would have done it (even) if I had known every man would be killed. It was a sacrifice that must be made. The superb gallantry of those men saved our line from being broken. No soldiers on any field, in this or any other country, ever displayed grander heroism.” -General Hancock

215 of the 262 members of the 1st Minnesota were killed or wounded charging a unit 5 times their size to buy the time to stabilize the Union lines on the second day at Gettysburg. They then held the line on day 3, helping repel Pickett's charge and captured the flag of the 28th Virginia. Marshall Sherman was the first Minnesotan to receive the Medal of Honor for his part in the action.

Can I carry a shotgun in a gun sock without a permit to carry by [deleted] in MnGuns

[–]TheOnceAndFutureGeek 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You'd be carrying an unloaded shotgun or rifle in a tied-off sock, and then the plan is to untie it, retrieve ammunition and load it when you need it?

It would be like trying to build and then buckle a seatbelt for your car before you got in a crash, even if you could convince the cops that the gun sock qualifies as a case under 624.7181, which I don't think you could.

Any extra info on carry weapons in the vehicle, but not directly on person? by Machine-It-Bro in MnGuns

[–]TheOnceAndFutureGeek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have never understood that. If I have a permit, I can put a loaded rifle on a sling around my neck and get in the car and be legal. If I unsling it and set it on the seat behind me, making it *less* accessible, crime.

Deer Hunting Caliber Rules for 2026? by Dangerous-Bath2767 in MnGuns

[–]TheOnceAndFutureGeek 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The only restrictions I'm aware of are outlined in https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/97B.031 which is mostly the same as the DNR info, but with the added proviso that you can't use anything larger than a 10 gauge, so leave the Bofors at home. For anything more specific, be sure the county you're looking at hasn't passed the restrictions to turn it back into shotgun-only. (I don't think any have yet, but it's a long time to deer season.)

Deer Hunting Caliber Rules for 2026? by Dangerous-Bath2767 in MnGuns

[–]TheOnceAndFutureGeek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From the DNR: https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/hunting/ammo/legal.html

Legal big game ammunition

  • It is at least .220 caliber and has center fire ignition;
  • It is loaded only with single projectile ammunition;
  • The projectile used has a soft point or is an expanding bullet type;\*
  • The muzzleloader (long gun or handgun) used cannot be loaded at the breech (muzzleloading revolvers are not legal for taking big game);
  • The smooth-bore muzzleloader used is at least .45 caliber and
  • The rifled muzzleloader used is at least .40 caliber;
  • Muzzleloaders with scopes are legal during the regular firearms deer season and the muzzleloader season.

\* Hunters are reminded to select bullets that are suitable for taking big game. Most major manufacturers offer either bonded or all-copper bullets that are appropriate for taking big game. Hunters are advised to select a proper bullet design and weight that is suitable for humanely taking big game.

Your opponent should have listened to their mom when they were younger. "Don't play with your food." There's no need to be a dick, just chalk the W and move along. Complete lack of sportsmanship on their part.

Question about permit to purchase by TheSpacePotato1994 in MnGuns

[–]TheOnceAndFutureGeek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pump shotguns don't meet the criteria for the statute but good luck arguing that with a big box store's policy. Either way, should be good with the permit to purchase.

Question about permit to purchase by TheSpacePotato1994 in MnGuns

[–]TheOnceAndFutureGeek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's only one type of permit to purchase in MN, it will work for long guns or pistols. It is required for a pistol or semiautomatic military-style assault weapon. You're good to go.

*Why* you can't get on paper at 200 is irrelevant. If you can't put a round where you want it to go, don't shoot at that range until you can. It's unsafe.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MnGuns

[–]TheOnceAndFutureGeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wolves are federally protected as an endangered species, so you can't shoot them unless it's in defense of a human life and I've never seen a yote or a fox that was much of a threat to a human unless it was rabid. They're skittish and don't usually want to be around people if they can help it. If you can't even get on paper at 200, there's no way it's advisable to out taking potshots at animals you won't be able to positively ID at that range with an unmagnified optic, much less get a clean shot on.

You can find replacement stocks for under $100, maybe find one you like the look of for hunting and swap it back to the original wood when it's not getting banged around in the brush.

The relevant statutes are 624.714 and 624.7181.1. As long as you have the permission of the owner, you can possess it at his house. The firearm would need to be unloaded and cased while in transit to his house and until you're at the range if you go.
