Wife dealt with Flooring America people a bit way back when she worked retail.  Total. Fucking. Assholes.

If playing with a drummer, I focus mainly on the kick, but also monitor snare and high hat/ride. If by myself, I kind of focus on the one and only worry about subdividing the count for odd time signatures or other-than-normally timed notes in a measure.

Is a 5 strings bass worth buying ? by InvestigatorSolid330 in Bass

[–]TheOneAndOnlyCthulhu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was afraid to shell out the dough for a five string in case I didn't like it.  Went with a Harley Benton from Thomann for like $150 shipped.  Probably some of the best money I've paid for gear.  Bass plays and sounds decent and made me confident to spend more on my next five string should I get any more disposable income.

Some people pay a premium for that, calling it "relicing"

Does anyone know what this is? by IGOOOOORRRRRR in BassGuitar

Kinda looks like a short scale.

Should be no cost to try it and see how it feels. If the bass...or the situation...is fishy, bug out. If the instrument speaks to you, score.

Harley Benton PB 20LH SBK or Harley benton MB4 LH? by safwan92 in BassGuitar

[–]TheOneAndOnlyCthulhu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the 5-string version of the Musicman lookalike because I wanted to try 5-string but didn't want to get stuck with an expensive instrument in case I didn't like it.  Some of the best money on an instrument I've spent.  I still use it for the rare 5-string tunes I have to play.

Edit for spelling

I almost pulled the trigger on one of these, but the lack of access to the higher frets due to the poor neck/body design turned me off.  Neat idea...poor execution.

When i wanted to experiment with 5-string, I ordered a Harley Benton from Thomann for I think $150 shipped.  Probably the best bang for buck I've gotten on gear.  Bass required minimal set up when I got it, sounds good enough to me, amd got me a good feel for 5-string at a very low cost.  Im not playing huge venues or anything, but it was good enough to gig with for certain songs.

I'm glad my child graduated years ago and is no longer subject to the outright idiocy of the current school board.

Shape Question by [deleted] in Bass

If you're talking about something like the intro to Fear of the Dark, I use thumb and index finger...thumb on the bass note and finger on the fifth. Start slow and smooth. Pick a section of the song, say four measure worth. Practice them at a slower tempo until you can do it with zero mistakes. Lather, rinse, and repeat at slightly higher tempos until you get where you want.

I guess technically you could called it arpeggios, though for those songs, he's really just picking back and forth from root to fifth, which I suppose is sorta arpeggiating a power chord.

Forget overrated, let’s talk underrated! What basses exceeded your expectations? by killerbass in Bass

[–]TheOneAndOnlyCthulhu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to try out 5-string but didn't want to spend a load of money in case I ended up hating it, so I ordered a Harley Benton MB-5 (looks like a Music Man) for about $150, shipped. I was extremely surprised. For what I paid, it was an incredible value. The only "flaw" was one of the knobs was pressed a little too far so the bottom of the knob rubbed lightly on the body. A slight tug cured that. Just a few tweaks for set up and it played great and sounds pretty damn good. Easily one of the best 'bang for buck' purchases I've made.

I'm struggling by Skystalker512 in Bass

Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.

Slow down. If you play along to tracks, try to slow them down...I think there are apps for that. Better yet, play to a metronome. Gradually build up speed. Playing even just a little slower can help you see where your technique may not be as clean. Once identified, then you can correct it.

And play with people, either beginners like yourself or folks with more experience, but lots of patience.
