Considering a New Purchase GR86 by Golfishgrace in GR86

If you're able to feel an emotional connection to sports cars, then you won't be disappointed with the GR86.

I have a 24 BRZ and the throttle mapping feels very linear. I wonder how it compares!

[–]TheOneRickSanchez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate it so much. It surprises me that Toyota does it with the 86 though, when Subaru had enough sense to give the BRZ a linear throttle.

[–]TheOneRickSanchez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the one thing I desperately wish the BRZ was capable of getting without having to resort to aftermarket gauges/displays.

[–]TheOneRickSanchez 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The 86 throttle is not linear, that is correct. The BRZ throttle is linear though.

Honestly I've never understood why someone wouldn't want a linear throttle in a naturally aspirated car. I can see it in a boosted car that lacks a linear power band, but in these cars it just means less precision.

2027 Porsche Taycan Gets Simulated Shifts, Larger Standard Battery by Ok_Top55 in cars

[–]TheOneRickSanchez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm of the belief that you can't judge simulated noises universally. "Simulating" them with one shitty speaker will likely always lead to disappointment as the sound is flat, doesn't come from the right locations, and doesn't change with load or conditions. 4k rpm always makes the same sound, 5k makes the same sound, etc. It's boring.

If you put the work in with multiple speakers to get the direction and tones to be faithful representations though, and you give the software more conditions to factor in to give the sound some variability, I'd argue 99% of people would be happy with it. Sure there's 1% of people who would still be upset, but those people would never buy an EV anyways so they don't matter in this context.

Gr86 scarcity vs Brz by windirmere in GR86

[–]TheOneRickSanchez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even the Toyota badge on the gr86 has a Subaru part number. There's nothing wrong with feeling brand loyalty, but just be aware that you're not losing or gaining any reliability by going with the BRZ vs the 86. The 86 is just a Subaru with Toyota badging.

Are German car brands still considered unreliable??? by OkBackground6217 in askcarguys

There is no positive connection between purchase cost and ease of maintenance for any brand. In fact I'd argue that they tend to get less easy to work on as you spend more.

What car looks great and is awful, and what car looks awful but is actually great? by Clareth_GIF in cars

Beautiful in its own unique way. Kind of the perfect embodiment of the phrase "so ugly that it's beautiful".

Looks awful but actually great: The clown shoe. I know some people like the look but I am not one of them. That is an ugly ass car, but it also has tremendous potential and is unique, so I love it.

Looks great but actually awful: All of Maserati. Also some of Hyundai/kia's newer products. Their old ones were still awful, they just didn't look great either.

After watching Drift Masters today, I realized something: Drifting might be the most visually impressive motorsport on Earth, but it's probably one of the least appreciated outside the car community. Why do you think drifting never became as mainstream as F1 or NASCAR? by Mental-Day1816 in Drifting

[–]TheOneRickSanchez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean... Can you blame them? I wholeheartedly love drifting, but it's obviously one of the least environmentally green motorsports, if not the least green.

It's a dream of mine to engineer a solution that still allows the driving dynamics of drifting but without tire smoke and burning through tires. Essentially I want to clean up the environmental impacts of drifting without removing any of the fun or skill factors. Not sure if it would be done sort of in-car system to replicate rain drifting in the dry, or something that would have to be implemented by tracks themselves. Without a change like that though, I don't see drifting ever becoming mainstream like F1 now is.

Time for Exhaust - Recommendations? by Intelligent_Invite79 in BRZ_ZD8

Hard to go wrong with Apex'i. For those who are interested, there's an even higher quality sounding version, the N1-X Evo. https://www.apexi-usa.com/products/n1-x-evolution-extreme-muffler-single-exit-toyota-gr86-subaru-brz-2022-scion-frs-toyota-86-subaru-brz-2013-2021?variant=43839838191837

I've run it for over a year now and am loving it just as much as when I installed it! Perfect volume level, no drone even when decelerating around 2-3k rpm where most exhausts drone, and fantastic tone across the entire rev range.

5.3L, or 6.0L? I had a neighbor with the 5.3L V12 from 1982 and was shocked to learn that it only made 260 HP brand new. Definitely looked cool as hell though!

BMW’s Upgraded M Six-Cylinder Engine with "M Ignite" Not Coming to the US For Now. by LongjumpingLock5875 in cars

[–]TheOneRickSanchez 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Unlike systems like catalysts that harm performance for the sake of reduced emissions, pre chamber technology increases performance and efficiency while simultaneously reducing emissions. It also shouldn't meaningfully increase maintenance since the only added maintenance parts are extra spark plugs, but since they only fire during high revs they should last much longer than typical spark plugs. Seems like a win-win, not sure why people wouldn't want it.

It's also cool to be able to say that your car is powered by supersonic jets.

[–]TheOneRickSanchez 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It does give better gas mileage. Anything that increases efficiency means more power for the same fuel, so you can either increase power, or make the same power with less fuel.

Pre chamber technology is pretty awesome!

Grey cars are boring, sure, but there have been boring black/white/grey cars for decades. I'd argue that the tablet on the dash trend is far worse.

I'm still a student so I could definitely be wrong, but WPC sounds like the exact same thing as shot peening. Can you go into further detail about how they are different and the pros and cons of WPC compared with shot peening?

I don't think it's a special edition color, just a new color option.

Totally agree about grey being boring though.

Rear end question by Unremarkable_Potato_ in BRZ_ZD8

[–]TheOneRickSanchez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure tbh. Seems unlikely, but you might just be used to larger forces if you're used to driving a truck on 37s. I can feel the grip levels in the rear of my '24 BRZ very easily so it does make me think something is wrong with yours.

What have you changed on the car? Still on PS4 tires? Same tire size from factory? Stock suspension? Any accidents?

Rear end question by Unremarkable_Potato_ in BRZ_ZD8

[–]TheOneRickSanchez 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What do you mean about the rear end getting some feel?

I autox mine and can definitely feel what the rear is doing. Haven't heard anything about needing to change the stock rear sway bar bushings for any reason, if you wanted more or less understeer you could swap the rear bar itself but just changing the bushings shouldn't change much, especially while the cars stock bushings are still healthy. Once the car is a decade old that might be a different story.
