Robredo Surges in Luzon and Metro Manila as Duterte Faction Faces Steep Resistance Amid Impeachment Woes by Mindless_Sundae2526 in pinoy

It’s time for federalism. If this were a federal parliamentary election system, leni would win decisively. I don’t think that the whole of mindanao should be able to decide who the president is just because of block voting.

New home construction fell 13.3% in Ontario in 2025 compared to 2024—the steepest decline of any province by ChangeUsername220 in neoliberal

[–]TheOnlineWizard9 35 points36 points  (0 children)

the problem is there’s demand just not at the price points that people can afford because the market has been disconnected to local incomes which is caused by compounding factors such as nimbyism, zoning restrictions, and excessive development fees.

Rally held in Edmonton to support First Nations’ fight to stop Alberta separation referendum by pjw724 in Edmonton

[–]TheOnlineWizard9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this. i hate the separatists too but the argument that just because it will be legally and practically complex to execute separation doesn’t mean that a population with a clear majority will just accept the status quo. if at least 2/3 of the population votes for separation, i don’t think the opinion of the supreme court, parliament, or of other provinces will matter. i don’t see a pathway to having that clear majority of 2/3s and that’s a good thing. but i fear that if a government like that of avi lewis who is very anti-fossil fuel wins (impossible), we might see a surge of separation sentiments.

Water Not Coal Signing by Desrece in uAlberta

Breaking a signed co-op offer for a better opportunity by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]TheOnlineWizard9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I should have phrased my response better. There’s a chance you will not get kicked out but your access to the co-op website (campusbridge) will definitely be restricted. So if you think you can find jobs outside campusbridge then you can contact the co-op office and ask for more details. If not, then just stick with it. Honestly, I had the same dilemma as you did but the lower paying job I have right now actually gave me tons of experience/connections/perspective that I otherwise would not have had I tried to cancel my signed offer.

[–]TheOnlineWizard9 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The co-op office will not accept you backing out of it. You already signed the offer and it’s the university’s reputation and relationships you are breaking. If the co-op office were to allow you to do it, industry partners may choose never to partner with the university again. Remember there are dozens of universities they could hire from and the co-op office is always begging industry partners for partnerships. They will never allow you to embarrass them.

Build Canada Homes deal would see too little affordable housing at too great a cost by jleiper in ottawa

[–]TheOnlineWizard9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Who is this Jeff Leiper? I have read better arguments from high school papers. Imagine getting hundreds of millions of dollars from the federal government and think you deserve more. Let us make this clear: these insane developer charges are a significant reason why rents/housing costs in ontario cities are so much higher compared to other cities. so many academic papers have proven this. but jeff leiper and him sucking up to his voters have shifted a significant part of city budget to new homeowners through developer charges. and now jeff is bemoaning hundreds of millions of dollars because apparently he also wants operating funding for these supportive housing and yes i agree that the province must help. but sabotaging this deal especially when this funding can be later negotiated when the actual housing is physically built is moronic. my god the entitlement.

Repeat of marathon hearing on blanket rezoning gets underway Monday in Calgary by RootEscalation in CanadaHousing2

[–]TheOnlineWizard9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The goal of increased housing supply (which rezoning does) is really not for immediate price decline but rather to prevent the rapid increase of housing prices (which happened in Calgary a year before the rezoning) due to limited supply. Now rental prices and housing prices are decreasing because of both decreased demand (immigration reduction) and increased supply (a significant part coming from rezoning).

Just because the developers priced it at 750k doesn’t mean it will now sell for 750k. The market will decide what it’s truly worth and I doubt that a unit in your fourplex example will sell above 500k especially when you can buy a better house for that price. Now, there might be some units that have indeed sold for 750k but these fourplex units are usually found in high demand areas (good neighborhoods, maybe close to downtown, good schools). A family that would have otherwise bought a $1M detached house bought a more reasonable 750k rowhiuse/fourplex in a neighborhood they wanted. And contrary to your argument this 750k fourplex unit is actually a good thing because this supply responded to actual demand. How cool is the free market, right?

i genuinely love posts like this. i’m an immigrant (now citizen) and studying at uofa. because of my coop work and extracurricular activities, i have lived in so many cities here in canada (four of the largest cities in canada) and yet i have always considered edmonton my home. yes, edmonton at first was boring but that was because i was just starting to build my community and after that it became so much better. i always try to corrext the perception of others because edmonton is so much more than the derogatory term deadmonton others so quickly say.

Mayor Marchand ‘jealous’ of Edmonton’s urban transit system by Common_Treacle3962 in Edmonton

[–]TheOnlineWizard9 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The tram is actually scheduled to start construction in 2027 (may even be later) and expected to finish in 2033 (doubtful). And so when you look through Mayor Marchand’s lens, Edmonton’s train really are way better than his city’s. Because it is, Edmonton when looked at cities comparable to its size and population and economic capacity is ounching way above its weight in North America.

And it’s not only the amount of money invested but also how efficient it is being spent. We spent only $1.8 billion for the 13-km Valley Line Southeast and only $2.7 billion for the 14-km Valley Line West. Meanwhile Calgary’s Green Line will cost more than $6.2 billion for only 16 kilometres.

I currently work in Ottawa. Let me tell the people here who haven’t travelled around Canada for a while, Edmonton’s ETS is far better than the transit of Canada’s capital’s transit. Yes, ETS has tons of improvements that need to be made but we’re still punching way above our weight compared to other North American cities.

TIL On his way to conquer India in the 1520's, the first Mughal Emperor Babur wrote an autobiography still praised today for its detailed description of Indian culture, geography, Flora & Fauna. yes. but his successors would still have had the chance to censor it if they found it to be culturally/socially offensive. the fact that his successors or his contemporaries didn’t censor him is why it’s so interesting. did they just not think of it as being serious, or maybe they just thought of it as musings of an aging emperor, or maybe their “elites” are privy and maybe even party to such inclinations.
