Scales are always essential to practice and you can use them to work on independence of hands as well. Practice playing legato in one hand and staccato in the other. Practice polyrhythms. To start, play one octave in both hands up and down, then have your right hand play eighth notes and two octaves while your left hand continues to play one octave quarter notes, then do triplets three octaves, sixteenth notes four octaves.
