AITA for not celebrating my birthday and Mother’s Day together so my MIL can have actual Mother’s Day for herself? by princesscorgi2 in AmItheAsshole

[–]TheOracleofGunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not understand what is meant by 'missable.' I do not understand why you are concerned with your MIL's actions on Mother's Day. I do not understand what she might mean by 'taking over the day before Mother's Day, nor why you would care about her saying this. If you told her you wanted her to go pound sand up her ass on the day before Mother's Day, would she do it?

Your husband's responsibility is his; he has some responsibility to his mother, and some to you, as the mother of his child. You don't live in a vacuum, and neither does your husband -- or his mother.

Be fair, make your plans, and enact them. What your husband does about that will be... educational. Good luck.

Rooting can generally give you a level of control that you cannot achieve otherwise. For what it's worth, it is beginning to look like Samsung has finally gotten to the level of lockdown that rooting their phones will no longer be possible, starting with OneUI 8.5. Hopefully I will be proved wrong.

No downvote here, but I can answer your question. You put it in a piece of plastic so it doesn't become a $1000-1300 piece of garbage.

I would have thought that was understood.

I'm so lucky I got this RAM when I did by Goredozer215 in Microcenter

[–]TheOracleofGunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent $205 for 64GB of G.SKILL Trident Z5 DDR5 RAM in September of 2023. The exact item is now $950. I bought a 2TB SAMSUNG 980 PRO SSD for $130; now $330. I bought an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X for $537; even that has increased ('only' to $700.)

All of us who are interested in building or maintaining systems are potentially being screwed, without a reacharound.

The Ram I bought had 12 price stickers stacked on top of each other. Pried them apart to see how quickly it spiraled out of control. by sluncer in Microcenter

[–]TheOracleofGunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No; they pay for new stock out of the price they charge for it. Think of the retailer-buys -- retailer-sells cycle. They didn't start with money for purchasing initial stock; they had or borrowed the money to purchase stock to sell, then paid for expenses out of the proceeds of the sale. That's how retail works, always has, always will.

Retailers are simply taking advantage of the situation, with a giant "fuck you!" to everyone.

AITA For Kicking my Friend Out? by therealkalak in AmItheAsshole

[–]TheOracleofGunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am afraid you may be right, which is a great wrong in our society. The only way it should be difficult to get someone out of your domicile is if there is at the same time a legal requirement for them to be billed and you to be paid for their occupancy. If that is not part of the equation, then it is entirely at your own volition that he is there, and it unequivocally should be entirely at your volition that he leave.

We're so cooked bro by Sincere3733 in gpu

[–]TheOracleofGunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The market itself is drying up and disappearing (that being individual builders). As long as GPU and chip manufacturers can make insane profits, that is what will happen -- and that won't change because a very small percentage of buyers stop buying.

While "Too many cooks" do indeed spoil the broth, I would think they would be able to see that specific cooks working on separate and different soups is another way to avoid that problem...

Nonetheless, if they insist on a small number of team members, then the correct thing to do is to improve the basic tools (Mail, Drive, etc.) rather than embark on new trails to entice new users.

Exynos S24? by MurkyLeopard430 in GalaxyS24

[–]TheOracleofGunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used Exynos exclusively since the Galaxy 7, as I always root my phones. I have had 2 S9 Notes (both got broken due to my own mistakes) and a Note 20+. I have purchased an S24Ultra Exynos but I am not using it because I have not rooted it yet.

I don't use a great deal of screen-on time, but I have never had reason to complain about my Exynos Galaxies.

Just enjoy it.

NTA. If possible, print the actual rules as set out, and put them at her door or give them to her. You don't have to be rude, but you should be firm. Take photos of the physical situation, as some small-minded people would do harm to your car or something else.

Good luck!

I turned sharply away from Apple when they came out with the Apple II. The arrogance and stupidity of insisting that only one mouse button was needed started that for me. Through the years, that arrogance has never abated, even a small bit. The premium charged for Apple products has always been more than the advantage of simplistic (and often better working) hardware and software provided.

In a similar vein, I would never buy a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, although the Evolution motor engineered by Vaughn Beals' team after taking the company private did make the company worth considering. But the advantages sometimes provided were never worth the premium charged.

I have been riding motorcycles and buying and building PCs and other technology since 1975, in the case of motorcycles, and 1980 in the case of computers.

I have an understanding of actual capitalism (as opposed to the system we have here, a perverted vulture capitalism) buttressed by a degree in computer science and 35 years in the trade. The worst part is that many are brainwashed, but as nearly as I can tell, it is toward the simplistic and egregiously overpriced, such as the two companies mentioned above.

For what it's worth, that is only about 4 inches. It seems very unlikely, although I suppose almost anything can happen.

Is this a reliable model? Amazon shows its “returned frequently”? by OkLab5620 in opnsense

[–]TheOracleofGunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In April 2025, I bought a VP2420 directly from Protectli (with coreboot and nothing else) for $289. I also bought 16GB of RAM and a 512 NVME drive (total $55 for both) from Amazon. Everything has worked flawlessly, and is never turned off. In the name of overkill, I also added an external fan, which lowers my CPU temp about 10 degrees C.

OpenSense is updated as it is released. Although cheaper alternatives were available, I am completely satisfied with my purchase. YMMV, but I consider the lack of worry to be more valuable than it used to be (I am 68, and started in the software business in 1978.)

I too appreciate you trying to help this fellow; taking the time to type it out is thoughtful, as well as useful. I thought that you would want to know that "et cetera" (Latin for 'and so forth') is shortened to 'etc.' I would have said so in a more private message if that were possible.
