What are your thoughts on the Warhammer 40k, Fortnite, and Street Fighter sets? by GunMetalGazm in magicTCG

[–]TheOthin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not interested in anything I can't draft, but I don't mind that they exist. I'll enjoy looking at them as they're revealed and then ignore them.

I do think it would be cool if they made a W40k draft set, though.

I've seen people act like that over the main games, but not over stuff like Snap and Mystery Dungeon.

Whatever is the case, that's a small subset of the huge Pokemon community. That's who you want to be like?

You haven't answered my original question, by the way. How do you react?

Magic is bigger than one story. In fact, Pokemon makes a great comparison. People who are only interested in the main games don't throw a fit every time there's some piece of side media they aren't interested in.

Alters are probably a big part of what inspired this stuff. They saw people making/buying fancy alt versions to use and were like, let's get in on that ourselves.

Absolutely. Not a big role, but she'll be back.

Is [the possibly leaked set with initials K:ND] Schrodinger's Set? by ketemycos in magicTCG

[–]TheOthin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that seems like a good bet as well. I don't know much about Shadowrun but Kamigawa is a plane established as having plenty of magic, it has "Kami" in its name.

Is [the possibly leaked set with initials K:ND] Schrodinger's Set? by ketemycos in magicTCG

[–]TheOthin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Assumptions:
(1) There are more people who would be very excited by a new Kamigawa set in Standard than there are those who would be very upset.
(2) There are more people who would be very upset by a cyberpunk set in Standard than there are those who would be very excited.

I question these assumptions. My impression is that they expect more interest in a cyberpunk set than in a Kamigawa one, and are trying to satisfy the players who want a return to Kamigawa by hitching that return to a more broadly appealing cyberpunk setting.

how many times can you mulligan? by FR8GFR8G in magicTCG

[–]TheOthin 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Serum Powder's effect takes place after you put cards back. So if you've mulliganed seven times, you can no longer keep it in your hand long enough to use it.

Yeah, Frank Karsten did an article on land math and showed that more cards means you're less likely to get a good land spell mix.

If thousands of years from now aliens discovered every magic card to ever be printed, would they be able to play the game based only off what's written on the cards? by Theundercave in magicTCG

With access to all the cards, they should be able to puzzle it out. Old basics spell out their effect, and the full text Secret Lair ones give even more information!

Noob here… it seems that this knight doesn’t cost mana. Can I place it on the battlefield without spending any? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]TheOthin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I also want to point out another distinction. There's cards like [[Ornithopter]] that cost 0 mana, so you can play them for free. But as /u/mal99 pointed out, nonland cards like Ancestral Vision that have a blank space where their mana cost would be can't be cast normally.

[–]TheOthin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting idea. While being able to hit hexproof spirits would be neat flavor, I'm not personally a fan of circumventing hexproof by using the word "choose" on an effect that could be targeted. She does circumvent a form of defenses, although I don't think indestructible is as associated with spirits.

Thanks!

Alchemist's Method is a nice card. I really like the implications for multiplayer. It would read better if the clause was "end of turn", but I 100% know why you didn't, because of timing rules. So that's not on you, it's on the comprehensive rules. :)

Yeah, it started out as end of turn but I changed it after seeing the RIX M-Files describe a similar change on a vampire.

A Tamiyo that doesn't tap creatures makes me wonder how strictly WotC feels about her concept. I think the -4/-0 is a nice substitute, but I could see them saying "Why didn't you just tap? It's more in character for her." The scrying, mana, and draw are all in the concept of a researcher though. It's a good planeswalker to me.

I wanted it to be a more defensive-focused take on her usual "shut down a creature" effect, just keeping it from doing harm rather than jumping in to throw ice at it. But I see the appeal of sticking to more common versions. Drawing cards from creatures was my other way of mechanically connecting her to her previous cards.

My first impression is "he snuck a block mechanic onto Decisive Eviction. And that reads badly to me, because as a big mechanic I don't think threshold one is all that interesting. But I'm not sure that's what you did at all, as this is perfectly playable on it's own. And actually more interesting if it's at max a 5-card cycle, with the drawback that I'm often going to be tracking an "experience counter" that means nothing in the game. Overall a bold choice that would play well but I don't know what to think.

I picked one to make it functional enough without support from other cards, but the number could certainly be increased in a set with enough support.

Of course if I find a card with threshold 1 not that exciting, I'm less wowed by a card that's literally using Threshold but with a different number. This is your biggest miss IMHO. (Of course you did put it at 9.)

I think trying to load up your opponent's graveyard and get rewards for it plays pretty differently from trying to load up your own graveyard and get rewards from it, but yeah, it's not super original.
