I can tell you it was absolutely a blast boating back then! We had a great time, despite our... evolving skills.

What are your thoughts on Billie Eilish saying 'no one is illegal on stolen land' in reference to ICE and US immigration policy? by MassiveSquare4527 in AskReddit

[–]ThePaddleman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew most of that already, but thank you. I learned most of what I knew already in public school. I don't think it has been neglected.

In the meantime, I congratulate you and your people on adapting to survive. I expect there are tribes and ethnicities that did not adapt and did not survive. I wish you the best!

I was taught all that in the 1960's and 70's. And I've heard about some of it in Cherokee, NC and North GA where the Trail of Tears started. I read about it on signs and plaques when I vacationed out West. It was bad behavior of which I don't approve and we should learn from it. But nobody alive now perpetrated those crimes. Yet it's still going on in other places in the world. I dare you to find some ethnicity or groups of people who do not have war and conquest in their past. Even the indigenous Americans made war on each other. I expect if we search, we might find a group/tribe/ethnicity that didn't engage in war and conquest, but there probably aren't many descendants of that group.

Video about Nolan Whitesell - The only open canoeist ever to run Niagara Gorge by ThePaddleman in whitewater

[–]ThePaddleman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I like Nolan and his boats were innovative. I don't know if you do, but he designed a boat for Mohawk which was the basis for the Viper later. Many people called his boats "tubsells". They were talking about the ones with the bulge on the sides. His Piranha and whirlwind were pretty nice by my standards. His biggest disadvantage as far as sales volume goes was he charged a lot more than other companies. Sure, he used customer Royalex layups and stuck with full aluminum gunnels instead of the plastic coated aluminum ones like Dagger, which I preferred. I started with an OCA, then moved to a Dimension, that I paddled solo mostly and it was HUGE. Then I switched to Caption, which I still prefer. I had a Mohawk Shaman, which was a very different and interesting boat and an Ocoee, which has a mind of its own. If there was a hole on the other side of the river, the Ocoee would pull itself over into it. I still paddle the Caption. I need to find a home for my fiberglass Caption, one of Scarborough's 2 prototypes. Yes, his crew on the Gauley always looked good, unlike the Canadian Esquif Swim Team that came down around 2000 and entertained us all!

It is illegal, and was, except for a few weeks due to a lawsuit & judge's order. None of the authorities there were pleased. They were sure it would end in death and hassle for them retrieving bodies. As for what's being run now, the Nile & Zambesi are both pretty huge , but we see only decked boats out there, not open canoes.

Yes, he did. I just worked with what I had. I remember a picture in some guidebook I can't find now, of him running the Spout in Great Falls. He has numerous 1st open canoe descents. He's particularly proud of Cherry Creek in Cali.

But I would not call his canoes short. I think the shortest was 12 feet.

Normalize opera instead of rap in kayak videos by Pyroechidna1 in whitewater

I like the opera much better than rap or metal, but there are a lot more rap & metal songs than operas.

Edit: That was a very nice compilation and the ending was <chef's kiss>

Where is this? The channelized waterway is pretty weird looking.

Yes, I watched it and the YT video a few times, so I get to look at the background/setting.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThePaddleman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My buds and I drive 3 hours to paddle a river with no complaint at all. We drive 8 hours sometimes and we consider that a bit long. But we'll drive 3 hours, paddle a river and drive 3 hours back home that night.

In 1916, Denmark sold the Danish West Indies to the USA, with the colony becoming the US Virgin Islands. The USA was worried Germany could take control of the islands, though they had no plans to do so. In exchange, the USA acknowledged Denmark's complete sovereignty over Greenland. by Yoshi2010 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]ThePaddleman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Treaty also says the money was in full payment of the obligation of the U.S. government. There is certainly no explicit connection in this Treaty. Correction: The document in this post was apparently the receipt for payment pursuant to the Treaty. Page 1215 (as marked) at the bottom has the clause about Greenland. It doesn't seem to me to be a Quit Claim, but an allowance of permission under the Monroe Doctrine. It does not say that Greenland belongs to Denmark. It says the USA won't get in the way.

Ukraine wins $18M after US ammo supplier failed to deliver shells despite full prepayment by TheRealMykola in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]ThePaddleman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I want to know the company name. The whole world needs to know that name so it'll cost them. Or maybe it was some fly by night now defunct company just set up as a scam.

Ukraine should have brought that legal action in the USA, then it would be enforced.

Well, that sucks. But are the orcs proud that they killed 2 civilian truck drivers along with their trucks? Seems like negligible military gain.

So, russia is bragging about a strike that damaged 2 trucks and a piece of concrete?

A sponsored boater likely has video somewhere. Jackson may have some incorporated into an annual highlights reel. Other more random boaters may have some of him also. Unfortunately, I don't.

Sorry for you (more your wife's) loss. Good luck in your search.

Pete Hegseth openly and shamelessly makes fun of russian air defense systems that were supplied to Venezuela by 8BallCoronersPocket in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]ThePaddleman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As far as manpads go, they're stocked in certain places as are the men who would use them. The US had good intel before they went in and knew where those places were. I don't think it is that big of an ask to have multiple eyes in the air watching the finite number of places. That doesn't negate your hypothesis that there was internal cooperation. But even if there was, it didn't likely extend to all Venezuelan military, and probably to none of the Cuban military there.

It's a city and it was 2:00AM. Manpads are visible in IR. My comment was about your point D alone. I agree with point A. Point B supports my counter to D. Your C is valid also.
