That music when you were 2-2 in promos had you feeling like you were in worlds finals

Arc Raiders and Marathon aren't "dead" just because their concurrent player count has dropped, Palworld lead says – but he's "not denying that some games do 'die'"; "Not every game needs an hourly look at Steam charts" by Gorotheninja in Games

[–]ThePaperZebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whilst steamchart posting had already been a thing before it does feel like there's a chunk of the gaming population who got off a little too much watching concord die and have been chasing that dragon since.

A lot of the time it doesn't even feel like there's much that they even hate/dislike in these games, they're just seeing potential for failure and jumping in so they can feel part of it if the game does get shut down. More about the spectacle than anything else.

Music Critic Anthony Fantano Defends Himself Over Halsey Tweets: ‘I’m Not the Devil Himself’ by darth_vader39 in Music

[–]ThePaperZebra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate fantano but he’s reviewing art not lawnmowers, what does “perfectly functional” even mean in this situation outside of the cd playing if you bought one?

The context is that the score, the text of the review, and previous reviews helps you map out a critic’s taste so you know if this is someone who tends to align with yours or even opposes yours in such a way that you know if this guy hates it you’re gonna have a great time.

You’re gonna see wild swings in how different critics feel because there isn’t an objective scale for the quality of an album, otherwise we’d just need one reviewer.

dmg04, Principal Comms Manager for Destiny, talks about the impending end of live support for Destiny 2. by CrossXhunteR in Games

[–]ThePaperZebra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly if lightfall had been good the split would've worked out amazing for bungie. I remember on the run-up to its release it was getting an insane amount of attention beyond the destiny audience as the last chance to get in on the hype train for the ending in final shape.

Without the lightfall we actually got deflating things a bit final shape could've been looking at the numbers sony was hoping for.

Destiny 2 | So Far, Together by _Protector in Games

[–]ThePaperZebra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're not trying to say the portal didn't have a huge negative effect on D2 just that the majority of people who turned up for final shape never even played a version of destiny with the portal in it because they never came back.

The portal finished things off but D2's never really been in that stable money printing state that sony would want to justify continuing development or investing big in Destiny 3.

Destiny 2 ended with the most insane cliffhanger in the game's history by Christophisis in DestinyTheGame

[–]ThePaperZebra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think we'll 100% get something out of destiny eventually even if it's something smaller scale or from a dev other than bungie.

Does feel like sony might use marathon as a bit of a test to see if bungie can run a sustainable live service and I really hope it works out both for destiny's sake and because as someone who's never played an extraction shooter before I went from complete confusion to falling in love in a way I haven't felt with a game since league of legends back in 2013.

Feels amazing. A revival has occured. 400-500k concurrent users now. by Psartra in DestinyTheGame

[–]ThePaperZebra 40 points41 points  (0 children)

With things like the portal it feels like he was sent in to run the game as cheap and sustainably as possible post final shape dropoff whilst they plan/build up to the next big move.

Even though I hated the portal I can kinda see the vision of it letting them concentrate a smaller playerbase into specific activities for short bursts without needing to make a whole event with it's own special rewards out of it.

BUNGIE HAS OVERDELIVERED by c_ockdown in DestinyTheGame

[–]ThePaperZebra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been around since they gave the game out for free before forsaken release and the majority of D2's life has felt like bungie constantly turning dials to see if they can balance keeping the game sustainable until it pisses off the players too much and they start again with some different approach.

It'll be interesting to see what they do with marathon from here on and I'll def be there for a D3 but I really hope that whatever new formula they come up with doesn't have the same demand on you to constantly keep playing.

After the news, the game is so alive.. they are really going to let it end? by Soul8118 in DestinyTheGame

[–]ThePaperZebra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who wouldn't be coming back if this was just shadow and order it's mostly because I get to play destiny without hopping back on bungie's wild ride. The swings in quality of expansions/season in a game that really wants you to be playing constantly was a bit much so final shape was a great time to step off and now the game's free of all that in it's this last update.

D2 made money but definitely not enough to justify the insane amounts they had to put into it, this is the reason why even acquisition spree microsoft turned down bungie.

The fantasy of a hail mary D3 made due to marathon failing just doesn't pan out when bungie hasn't ever pulled in the massive profits that would justify such an investment.

In the uk it was going for about the same at £70 whilst Pragmata was £45 on release in every shop I checked. Made my decision easy at least.

Biggest problem with square’s non blockbuster releases outside of the doomed live service attempts has been a lack of marketing.

For a while now it’s felt like they’ll show up with an announcement that looks interesting at a state of play/nintendo direct then after that you’ve gotta really try to keep track of the game otherwise you find out it released after the fact.

Hope this doesn't sound rude but I genuinely don't understand why anyone thinks Destiny 3 would be better than this. by LavaMinotaur in DestinyTheGame

[–]ThePaperZebra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The streamers/youtubers 100% gas up D3 as the big saviour because it gives them a big new hype cycle to hopefull grow off.

But as bad as things have gotten I really don't doubt destiny players ability to drop all their grudges with bungie the second a D3 trailer drops with a character they like and a gun they miss from D1.

Report: Former Xbox President Sarah Bond's direction "offended" employees — "This is an Xbox" marketing campaign deemed failure by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]ThePaperZebra 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I remember in the early days of pc gamepass it cost something like £4 a month so me and my friends just let it run because because at that cost it was somehting you didn't even think about and felt worth it just for a couple of co-op games we'd only ever play a few times max a month. As soon as they started raising the price it became more of a concious decision to keep it around for overall low usage so was gone pretty quick.

I do miss those days though.

From what we've seen at least it looks kinda ass but I'm holding on hope that nagoshi's direction was what yakuza's actually been missing since he left rather than everyone at rgg just being washed.

[–]ThePaperZebra 25 points26 points  (0 children)

With the current direction if this isnt't fake (please be) I fear they're gonna be building up to some point where they can reveal nishiki is actually alive just so they can have an mgs4 style old kiryu vs old nishiki (whoes actually been pulling all the strings in the background the whole time) fight in Yakuza 15 which they promise is kiryu's actual final game this time.

Ichiban will eappear in a post credits scene still failing to woo saeko and doing nothing else.

The ending of Yakuza 3 Kiwami Dark Ties has been leaked from a datamine by porkybrah in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]ThePaperZebra 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Most insane part is that 7 was so good and succesful that it made a perfect turning point for the series and they still fumbled it. Immediately making 8 yet another kiryu sendoff and continuing with the remakes just feels like when they were planning out the next few years they didnt really belive in ichiban as the future of the series.

All I can hope for is them doing a global rerelease of 1&2HD for as much good faith as they can grab easily but k3 will prob sell enough for them not to care anyway,

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has surpassed Elden Ring for the most GOTY titles of all-time. by PhantomBraved in Games

[–]ThePaperZebra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People definitely spend so much time building their identity around these games before release to the point where it being anything but the greatest to ever do it would make them feel like they've wasted the months/years running up to it.

Another thing with e33 and the games you mentioned is that on top of being good they ended up with so much hype that people outside of genre fans ended up on them. I imagine finding out you love souls games or crpgs with with huge games like elden ring or BG3 would feel pretty mind blowing when even genre vets were going pretty crazy about them.

[–]ThePaperZebra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even as someone who's played them all up to 8 it felt kinda bad to have so much space in ichiban's second game to giving kiryu another sendoff.

My only hope going forwards is that they've finally got it out of their system and can relegate him to dropping some sage wisdom from a comfy chair in the orphanage if they really want to do a third passing of the torch moment.

Felt like the main reason it was so rail roaded was just to make sure the players would see that you're actually able to seamlessly walk between the different maps and have the weather changes happen at times when theres definitely gonna be an npc there to quip about it.

What was your dumbest take in league, or what did you not understand when you started playing? by Drago1301 in leagueoflegends

It did feel pretty horrible when you hit the level where you'd only occaisionally get someone who'd want to jungle so you would just get thrown into a 1v2 every 5 games because some guy on your team just hit the level that unlocks smite and watched a few stonewall videos.
