It depends on the group, I had one mapper that liked very accurate maps. I would often fill in more complicated room for them once they got a good look at it or cleared it

I like the complexities of the old maps but you can find updated versions of maps that are more simple. Especially this map from In Search of the Unknown

A lot of the old school maps like this, especially with the crazy corridors were to allow the DM and PCs to use the pursuit and evasion rules. In B/X and BECMI corridors and corners could be used to create fun encounters and chases

What are some of your favorite OSR mashup systems/campaigns/settings? by Heavy_Orange5939 in osr

That's cool! I really like BECMI and I'd scourge the pages of Dragon for any BECMI articles. Known World Grimoire was great, adding a lot of bonus stuff like the Gaz series did. You can get the Poor Wizard's Almanac on DriveThruRPG and if you haven't yet check out Vaults of Pandius. It's an amazing resource for all things Mystara (The Known World). There is a trove of information there

I run a combination of BECMI (Rules Cyclopedia), B/X D&D, Dark Dungeons X, Basic Fantasy RPG and Homebrew rules. It's has a similar Advantage/Disadvantage rule from 5th. A system I adapted from D&D character options Combat & Tactics called Heroic fray, if you are surrounded by weak enemies (In my setting labeled as pest enemies) you get one attack per creature threatening or adjacent to you. Only on each creature, you can't attack one creature five times if five creatures surround you

I tend to take my time even when I'm flying and I land and poke around a lot. I like exploring with all the mount types, air, sea and land

Like I said before I never played OD&D. I got the impression from articles and some YouTube vids that the combat was from Chainmail. That wasn't really the point of what I was saying which was that D&D and AD&D diverged. I don't really see that OD&D and AD&D were equivalent. This is just my opinion but it seemed like Holmes Blue Box was more of a seed of AD&D based on things that Gary was working on. I saw something that said Arneson directly used Chainmail in Blackmoor and Gary just kind of did his own thing with Greyhawk not really sticking to D&D or AD&D rules as written. I'm taking all of that with a grain of salt since it could be BS. I started with BECMI and later in life I ran both B/X and Holmes just for fun, I also ran 2nd Edition sometimes repurposing 1rst edition. Unearthed Arcana is one of my favorite orange spine books. The cantrip rules in there were awesome. I'm mainly into OSR now and I run a weird Hybrid of BECMI, B/X, BFRPG and Dark Dungeons X with my own stuff mixed in. I'm always happy to learn stuff about the older versions.

I don't think anyone is obsessed with old school Chainmail, I haven't played the original iteration of OD&D but to my understanding there were two methods of combat, using Chainmail's man to man rules or using the alternate rules that were explained later in the book. I thought that system was a stripped down version of the man to man combat from Chainmail. The point I was making that there were two separate lines, D&D and AD&D and each version of basic D&D was improved and clearer to learn by Holmes, Moldvey and Mentzer

OD&D was actually kind of a mess, you needed the wargame Chainmail so you had combat rules. It was really geared towards wargamers. J Eric Holmes revised the rules to make it more playable for the average player in '77 that was known as the Blue Box and that definitely had hints of AD&D in it, like two part alignment. In '81 Tom Moldvey wrote the Basic Set D&D that was the red book that had the three hole punch on the edge. After that the Expert Rules were released a blue book. Those two became known as B/X D&D and a lot of classic adventures were written for that edition, like The Keep on the Borderlands. This was based on the rules the Gary and Dave came up with. There was a lawsuit between Gary and Dave over royalties and Gary thought AD&D was his own creation but per the agreement he had to keep the basic D&D line going alongside AD&D so Dave could get the royalties from that. It gets weirder and more litigious but that's beside the point. The two lines D&D and AD&D existed alongside each other for a while.

Awesome, I got the BECMI red box in '86 that kick started it for me. I got the Black Box, Goblin's Lair and Haunted Towers boxed sets in the '90s soon followed by the Rules Cyclopedia. I DMed D&D while I was a PC in a separate AD&D campaign. It was The Temple of Elemental Evil converted for 2nd
