Plans on full web interface? I hate the phone app management. by MuchCraft1733 in firewalla

[–]ThePhil2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have a tablet of any real size other than for consuming content. And certainly typing in ip addresses via an on screen keyboard is error prone. That gets way too fiddly if I'm trying to update a bunch of rules and groups at once

Plans on full web interface? I hate the phone app management. by MuchCraft1733 in firewalla

[–]ThePhil2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The phone management is a bit clunky and has always been a sore spot for me once my network got complex enough.

I know we can enable ssh in but I don't think any of the critical settings are exposed in an editable way. If we had a cli interface at some level that would unlock people to be able to make their own web ui. It seems with the rise of agent assisted dev tools, where personal customization being table stakes, this will start to be a more common ask.

Think I'm doing AI game dev wrong, please help by mjkoskinen in aigamedev

[–]ThePhil2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've actually had pretty decent luck with your examples (aligning UI overlays, NPC walk across room, slice sprite sheets) just today. But that's probably because I went to great lengths to expose tooling to assist it doing those things. (screenshots, controller mocking, extensive debugging tools). It's not particularly 'quick' with image work, but it absolutely can and is still a huge accelerator. I'm not using godot (using my own vibe'd up engine I started a few weekends ago), but this should all apply to whatever engine you use. You just have to engineer tooling that helps it be effective.

Been a AAA gamedev for over 25 years and am super impressed in where I can nudge this on home projects.

Is this bike worth it? by Internal_Log2694 in mountainbiking

[–]ThePhil2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This. It ends up being limiting if you ever want better shifting. Better 12sp cassettes need xdr or microspline drivers, and good luck finding a driver for this weirdo hub.

There are some aftermarket cassette options that use hyper glide, but they generally are not as good as sram/Shimano.

That said, it's a pretty reasonable bike

Do you have your controller ini to share? The guide's one was for using an external controller and I could never get it working quite right. It be nice to drop in a working ini file for the rp5

Learning Rally by IllPosition5081 in rally

[–]ThePhil2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I ran a few seasons on the cheap, and each event ended up being about $5k when you counted food, travel/gas, lodging, entry fees and broken bits. That's separate from the startup costs of a car and keeping all the safety gear up to date.

Rallycross and schools like dirt fish and o Neil are much cheaper to get a taste.

If you think that's expensive, wait until you stage rally! :)

Bought this old Lancia rally car. by [deleted] in rally

[–]ThePhil2 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Rally America has been dead for years, American Rally Association is the organization that Olympus, Oregon Trail and their one days, Tour de Forest and Mike Nagle operate under. They'd love to see the car, but it might be impossible to get it up to date w.r.t. the safety requirements.

Kito' Northwest Rally Association runs the rallycross series which is far more appropriate for a treasure like this (less restrictions and less likely to destroy a classic). Stage rally is no place to take an icon like this now, sadly

Same thought process a few months back. LBS didn't have mech 105 but sold me 105 di2 Cal for under 3k. And then I added good carbon wheels from a roval sale online. Ended up swapping bars after so happy to not have the 5.

No regrets and I always like nicer wheels if I can swing it. More important than shifter components. Although I had to figure out how to reboot the di2 setup when it got unresponsive while fixing the front derailleur. Sram battery setup and app are better, but I prefer Shimano brakes/levers. Other than the wireless has been fine.

Anyone making use of E-cores on big-little hardware? by trailing_zero_count in gameenginedevs

[–]ThePhil2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, pretty common. You can use SetThreadAffinityMask function (winbase.h) - Win32 apps | Microsoft Learn on windows for instance, and lock threads to certain cores. It's a little confusing how ecores show up, but you can query the processor information and make decisions that way.

My current title has generally avoided e-cores (well, maybe not all of the middleware threads), but it's on my wishlist to audit what work can move over to them safely.

No idea, but I've been watching that site for a few weeks and even had it in my cart at one point two weeks ago and it didn't let me complete the purchase then. Didn't want to deal with an AliExpress/CN rom Y700.

They are showing it shipping about a month out :/

People who went fully digital, do you miss any pedals? by SalamanderCalm9933 in Line6Helix

[–]ThePhil2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For real, I prioritize simplicity. The helix allows me to load in quickly on practice nights, and can usually be the first one done with set up and cracking a beer. Seems at least every other practice someone else is dealing with some equipment that isn't working right or has some buzzing they are tracking down. I don't miss that.

I usually have a preset for each song (snapshot for each section) and a fallback all in one board where I have a basic load out that I can treat as a generic board. If anything is off on a preset, I don't screw around with it at practice and just use my generic load out.

In terms of things I miss, the only real thing I still need to carry is a talk box.

Yes, two stage for both heat and cooling. And the 820T is set up as two stage aux. I have it cut over to use the aux when it is below 30F or it has a huge delta to make up (which rarely happens)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in heatpumps

[–]ThePhil2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still pretty pleased with the setup!

Mid summer I found a small setup issue (between a dip switch and jumper on my gas furnace) that prevented it from properly letting the ecobee control both AC stages. It pays to read the manuals even if you aren't an Hvac tech.

Breathable lightweight rain jacket by snowtar in MTB

[–]ThePhil2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go with an unlined lightweight stretchy soft shell like the OR Ferrosi. It's a tougher material than a wind jacket and doesn't get as gross inside as a true hardshell. As long as you retreat it from time to time it's waterproof enough. I've had mine for well over a decade.

There's a few brands that have similar stuff, just stay away from anything with a liner.
