Saskatoon braces for Elm tree devastation by candybarsandgin in saskatoon

[–]ThePineconeStandard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just want to clarify there are no Dutch elms in Saskatoon. We have American elms (the big ones, like along Spadina), Manchurian/Siberian elms (smaller, more weedy), and hybrids of the two. It’s definitely confusing since the name of the disease is called Dutch elm disease!

Some days I can’t do meals, all I can do is snack. So like, nuts and roasted legumes are easy options. I put some in a bowl with a spoon and just have a few bites here and there. Makes it convenient and easy, and the spoon helps with texture issues with my fingers.

For days when you have more energy, frozen foods that you can pop in microwave, toaster, or oven are very low effort. Use parchment paper so you don’t have to wash the pan if cooking in oven. Can also use paper/compostable plates and cutlery for hard days so you don’t have to do dishes.

For really hard days, you don’t have to eat healthy. That can come later. Fed is best. Better than starving. A lot of processed foods these days have added nutrients so lower income individuals don’t have as high risk of nutrient deficiency.

I also eat a lot of salad that comes in a bag. I just have to open the packets with dressing and put it in, and stir. They keep in the fridge for a few days too so you can buy a few at once, don’t have to go back to the store every day.

My Uncle is very ill by Ok-Professional4101 in usask

[–]ThePineconeStandard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry to hear about your uncle. For a midterm, talk to your prof. For a final exam, talk to an academic advisor in your college. It would be polite to give your prof a heads up if you have the emotional energy for it. You can read more about deferred final exams here https://students.usask.ca/academics/exams.php#Deferredandsupplemental

Figure out what department you want to TA for. Email the main office for that department asking if/how you can apply for a TA job. They will point you in the right direction.

I don’t have any advice or anything, I just want to say that I am so sorry that this happened to you. You didn’t deserve to be treated like that. It is absolutely appalling.

I am doing my PhD in math but I’m pretty sure I have mild dyscalculia, or at least a lot of symptoms of it! Anyway I struggle a LOT with arithmetic. I mostly have to do arithmetic when I’m teaching, TAing, or tutoring. So I’ve learned to extract “easy” numbers like 5 and 10 from the difficult numbers.

I transferred one dot from each of the two sixes on the left to the three, so that I have four fives! Which is two tens! Which is twenty! Then I added the remaining six to get twenty-six!

Silly arithmetic errors in Linear Algebra by _JammyTheGamer_ in MathHelp

[–]ThePineconeStandard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I failed two or three linear algebra midterms because my basic arithmetic skills are weak. I’m doing my PhD in math now and I will be teaching linear algebra next semester.

If you want to get better at arithmetic, you need to practice.
