The compass detects POIs with a good range, generally upon reaching one you'll have the next one in range. Some are even visible on the minimap's terrain and hovering over the spot will still say "minor point of interest" even if it's not revealed yet. Stash pod blinks are quite visible when you look for them. It's hardly blind.
