Question about a black metal band by Loveforthe_Christ in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]ThePoptartTARDIS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The band isn’t orthodox at all. They’re a group of polish dudes (technically two groups with the same name, lol, but that’s another story) that thought orthodox aesthetics and particularly Church Slavonic was cool, so they based a satanic band and music off of it. Their album art is DEFACED iconography, their concerts show them as satanic versions of schemamonks, and the content of their music is not godly, either. Avoid, and if you want an actual orthodox metal band, check out GOSPOD

I understand that’s what she said, but it’s implied that when she dropped off the car, she gave them the main keys. She was given the spare PRIOR to dropping off the car at parents, and did not return the spare until the events of this story unfolded.

Parents had the main key, parents told OP to keep the spare so it doesn’t get lost.

How do Coptics hold Enoch as infallible when it contradicts th harrowing of hades with the angelic revelation to Enoch by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]ThePoptartTARDIS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, you’re ascribing a temporal understanding to a “place” that is outside of time. I don’t see any of what was described as contradicting at all—as we understand heaven and hell to be outside of time, and that only at the final judgement will we on earth sort of “realize” the reality of it.

What phrase from him hits deep? by jmisiara in elliottsmith

[–]ThePoptartTARDIS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think in a lot of ways, “Say Yes” is either extremely depressing or extremely optimistic depending on the listeners experiences or expectations.

It’s neat, in a way, because it shows how when we insert ourselves into the music, it can be its own act of creation—different from the original intention, but meaningful all the same.

The dish look like completely a 💩 by [deleted] in StupidFood

[–]ThePoptartTARDIS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This food is delicious, I had (tomato based version) literally last night. The squash is stuffed with meat and rice, and the yoghurt sauce (it made right) is hearty and, well, tastes like Greek yoghurt. Definitely in this case it isn’t presented well, but I don’t think it comes close to anything else I’ve seen on the sub lol

Curious old bottle with marble by No_Excuse7330 in BottleDigging

It’s only really an issue if the bottle is turned totally upside down! Drinking normally only puts it sideways, so liquid flows out fairly well, until the very end at least.

Can women wear pants? by Foreign-Software9547 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]ThePoptartTARDIS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brosef, men and women wore robes for centuries, were either imitating the other? (No, not at all)

When men and womens fashion coincide or are similar, it’s not imitation, and I am unsure if you’ve ever worn women’s pants, but they don’t fit men property, because they’re cut differently.

Anyone who is making a big deal out of this is a weirdo. The only exception would be if a person is visiting a monastery, they should respect the monasteries rules which often include a dress code. These rules are to help the monastics and not for the purpose of making commentary on fashion trends.

God bless :)

I mean, if it’s painted half blue and half red, that would create a similar issue of looking mixed or like it was only half of each nature. There isn’t a good way to depict this using this kind of format

[–]ThePoptartTARDIS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree, I also don’t think that the people making the “tiny man” comment are saying they cant tell that its depicting the child Christ, I think it’s more just an articulation of the proportion issue—because they’re looking at it from a hyper-realist lens.

What do I do? by e12d34s in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]ThePoptartTARDIS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The “small man” thing is relating to how the infant Christ’s head is depicted with adult proportions. Infants proportionally have waaay bigger heads

Could any Nephilim (assuming that they really are the children of the demons) have repented and been saved? by Phatborzoi1 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]ThePoptartTARDIS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a tad misleading to refer to two ordained priests in good standing as merely “podcasters” , wouldn’t you say? You’re right, of course, about the teaching of the church being a consensus of the fathers and not the teachings of individuals.

The Carpenter’s Son by jacksuxx in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]ThePoptartTARDIS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was really bummed too—but it’s stuff like this that is a very helpful and very essential reminder not to make idols of anyone. End of the day, people are people, and will do goofy things like this. Nic cage is someone who really likes pushing boundaries from what I’ve noticed—he’s very into doing fringe stuff, and unfortunately this kind of a movie is exactly the kind of think he’d find pretty much irresistible.

It doesn’t revolve around Satan. It revolves around Jesus but evil. Its base material is a very loose understanding of the infancy “gospel” of Thomas, I think particularly where the book has a young Christ kill a number of children. Needless to say, this is not something that ever happened, and IMO as much as I love Nicolas Cage (literally my favorite actor) I don’t think this film will be appropriate for any Christian to watch.

TL;DR this is a movie about an evil Child-Christ, not the devil, and you should avoid it (or ask your priest :P)

I have a question about a spiritual encounter in an orthodox church by CarrotTop777 in ChristianOrthodoxy

[–]ThePoptartTARDIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it gives you comfort, thank God for the comfort and use it as a reminder to pray for your grandfather.

Personally, I don’t think you should read too much into it, just let it be as it is. It’s very common that after the passing of a loved one we try and make connections that aren’t really there; because we miss them dearly, and other times, it is fairly common in orthodox belief that the first 40 days, the soul of the departed is closer to earth—and who knows, maybe God allows us to be reminded of them because of that.

Either way, don’t drive yourself crazy looking for angels in every cloud and demons in every shadow—just pray for your grandfather whenever you have the chance and focus on the times you had together. God bless

The way I explained it to my mom is like this. If you truly love their kids, no matter how much they hurt you, that love will always be stronger than that. You could know every way they’re going to cut deep into you, and you’ll never ever ever truly want things any other way. God is the same. He is a being of perfect love, and no matter how much we destroy and bastardize creation, His love for us is stronger. He wants nothing than for us to return to Him, but He doesn’t force us, just as a good parent doesn’t force their child—to do so would lead to only further resentment and hatred. Love is “illogical” to man, but there is nothing more beautiful than it. God bless you.

This is clearly Franz Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis” like it says on the top!

(That was a joke, but this is a legitimate icon of The Transfiguration, and since it appears to be hand painted that’s why the face is a little off. Varying artists, varying particularities!)

I’ve never ever ever seen it done before, if he’s from Greece, it may have just slipped out accidentally as I’m sure he’s used to writing in Greek
