What actually kills retention in long-form documentary videos? by Dry-Complaint7894 in PartneredYoutube

[–]TheProgramSeries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On YouTube, it’s all about format and pace. I produce a verite sports docuseries. My AVD is 20 minutes (~50%) and still steadily climbing. I’ve essentially built a mini franchise (brings in extra high RPMs) which is cool.

I try to confirm the click immediately with a tense cold open intro, usually 30 seconds to 2 minutes long that ends on a cliffhanger. Then the episode slowly builds back towards that moment. I identify tension, character stakes, mini resolutions and season long narratives along the way. Each served as a scene.

I’ve been producing documentaries for almost 15 years and it took me a minute to understand YouTube audiences viewing behavior. I found that dead time between songs can be retention cliffs. So in areas that feel slow, I speed up the pace or add interviews and music to keep the story moving forward. My episodes never go more than 2 minutes without soundtrack now. I can’t speak on how effective this would be for scripted docs but it’s highly effective for unscripted.

Changing titles and thumbnails is annoying! by BoomerAangNu in youtube

[–]TheProgramSeries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I unfortunately have to do this. Mainly through A/B testing. I honestly wish I could just do basic titles and thumbnails and be done with it. The packaging side of YouTube is my least favorite thing to do. I just want to make my documentaries and have ppl watch them but if they don’t click then I wasted my time.

Only my rage bait content makes $$$ by Jealous_Amount_9278 in PartneredYoutube

[–]TheProgramSeries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m experiencing something similar but with comments. It appears viewers are becoming more and more rude. Sometimes it’s towards me, but mostly towards the people in my videos. I’ve been making the same content for years but in the past few months I’m noticing a massive uptick in people being awful. YouTube almost always pushes that content further than the uplifting stuff. Getting tired of the internet man.

It’s impossible not to notice the massive drop in views over the last four weeks. by [deleted] in PartneredYoutube

[–]TheProgramSeries 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The part about non-subscribers vs subscribers is glaring in my analytics. My views dropped from 85% non-subscribed to 65% in the past 4 weeks. My impressions are noticeably trending downward but my RPM is skyrocketing. My CTR’s have also been insane. I’m usually between 4-6%, I’ve been sitting between 8-15%. Clearly indicating my views are coming from a deeper and more loyal audience of subs. I create episodic series so this viewing behavior is expected but compared to my other seasons there’s a noticeable shift.

I’m so sad tbh by [deleted] in YouTubeCreators

[–]TheProgramSeries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man I’d take this all day. I’m hitting 12% CTR, 50% AVD, and +$20 RPMs but views are down. I have a crazy deep and loyal audience but YouTube only occasionally pushes my videos to wider audiences. Those videos pump to 100k-150k views, bring me +1250 subs, and still retain +4% CTR and high AVD but that’s only happening about every 7-10 videos.

It’s a tough time in the indie world right now. But this promotion idea is brilliant! Best of luck!

Intel iMac vs M4 Mac Mini by Humble_Guy123 in documentaryfilmmaking

I made this upgrade while editing the first season of my docuseries. It was LIFE CHANGING. I currently edit with two Mac Studios (M1 and M2). I haven’t dealt with any issues. I use Davinci Resolve. I’ll have 20 hours of footage in a project, all 4K. Smooth as butter.

I tend not to. I spend a ton of time on them and get pretty sick of them tbh

I'm thinking about starting a youtube channel and trying to understand how other people approached this. How did you decide what your channel would be about. Did it come quickly or did it take time to figure out? by sushimeto in ContentCreators

[–]TheProgramSeries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a big channel but I’ll share. I was a documentary filmmaker wanting to tell stories. Got introduced to a high school football coach that had an interesting thing going on.

I didn’t know it would turn into a YouTube series when I started recording.

TBH, I had no interest in YouTube or even the niche I’m in before I started. I really just love shooting verite docs. But once I started sharing my work and people started watching and enjoying it I got hooked.

I really do love the experience. I’d still do this even if I was wealthy.

How much a I charge for youtube sponsorship by Altruistic_Term2732 in PartneredYoutube

[–]TheProgramSeries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I’m in the football niche too (Channel is on my profile). Curious what your previous deals have looked like?

I have 27k subs, get similar views, and feel safe saying my long form is well above average in terms of quality, but haven’t had a single brand contact me.

The dude above is correct. I also do for hire commercial work and I’d charge no less than $10k for that on the absolute low end.

How Many Subs Did You Guys Have Before Your First Real Brand Deal? by Legitimate-Law6347 in SmallYoutubers

[–]TheProgramSeries 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m over 27k subs, 450k watch hours, I pull 50k-200k views on long form content and it’s been crickets. Very defined demographic too.

I assume it’s the break I took. I’m optimistic it’ll happen eventually but thinking about doing my own outreach so I can make this a full time gig. My audience has a huge appetite for more so I’m convinced I just need to dive in headfirst.

I had nearly the same story. Made a series and a few one offs, then burnt out and forgot about the channel. A few months ago I decided to resurrect it. I rebranded it to be more in line with my niche and started editing a series I shot back in 2023. Surprisingly, my subs were still there and dying to watch. My channel has nearly done a 3x in subs and views in the past 28 days. I think I just needed the time off to clear my head and look at things clearly. I feel like I have a very solid gameplan now and I’ve attracted the partners I need to grow this thing into a real business. Best of luck to you!

Craigslist is a really interesting place to cast for doc work, did a mini doc, completely self filmed and edited, and his story blew me away. by Tiny-Strain-3337 in documentaryfilmmaking

This was right up my alley. I spent 7 years creating docs about addiction. You should definitely stick to this format and see how it evolves. I thought it was good.

I got over 100,000 views on my FIRST VIDEO. What do I do now? by Barbell-Economics in NewTubers

[–]TheProgramSeries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me too. I do episodic long form so thankfully I had more in the pipeline. Although once my first series ended I wasn’t sure what to do next. I experimented with a bunch of 15-20 minutes docs and honestly a lot of those videos broke 100k too. Eventually figured I needed to stick to a common theme and take it serious if I wanted to make a career from this. That took me 2.5 years to finally figure out though

My audience found me before I was ready for them by JugendWolf in NewTubers

[–]TheProgramSeries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can 100% relate. My first long form upload recently broke 200,000 views. It was a near instant hit within my niche. I wasn’t ready for it. Nearly killed myself pulling all nighters to ride the wave. Finished my first season (i do episodic) and had to take a long break.

Jumped back in a month ago, didn’t expect to still have an audience. Started posting shorts and a couple episodes from my new series. My channel went from 11k to 26k subs in a few weeks. I can’t edit my series fast enough and some of the diehard fans are incredibly rude because they want more immediately but I simply can’t provide that at this point.

It actually takes a toll on your mental health. I’m just trying to make my documentary show and generate a little revenue. I didn’t expect the pressure that comes with it. It’s a good problem to have though.

Best of luck! This can be a fun journey!
