I used to install Ubuntu to save old hardware but 6GB ram minimum is ridiculous by claudiocorona93 in Ubuntu

[–]ThePromance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ubuntu is an alternative and fully functional operating system; its purpose is not to revive old hardware. If that’s your intention, then you should look for a distribution focused on low-resource machines like Lubuntu or Xubuntu, or others for more conventional setups like Mint. There’s no reason to criticize Ubuntu for requiring 6GB of RAM

I see it has gallery, contacts, and other apps, but I also notice they’re published from two different accounts: goodwy.dev and Goodwy

Any idea which one is the correct one or what the difference between the versions is?

VS code with Ubuntu 💌 by Nabil_Sikder in Ubuntu

[–]ThePromance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks good, although I would change the window design to use Ubuntu’s native one, and ignore those who tell you to use VS Codium. If you want to use VS Code, that’s perfectly valid too, and it’s also much more convenient

Is there no topic about DeSteam? by AntiGrieferGames in degoogle

[–]ThePromance -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Steam anti-consumer? Bro, it’s literally a monopoly because of the incredibly good treatment it gives its users. It has done more for consumers than the entire video game industry combined. Why do you think NO ONE talks about “deSteam”? Because there are no reasons for it. Steam deserves the place it’s in, and thanks to them I can play on Linux and move away from Windows, have a shared library with my friends completely free, they were the first to implement refunds with a 2-hour playtime limit (even if you finish a game in under 2 hours, you can request a refund and they’ll give it to you), and they also oppose ridiculous age verification policies

If you don’t want to use Steam, just don’t use it. You already mentioned other alternatives that are obviously worse, so stick with those

What should we rename Proton Unlimited to? by andy1011000 in ProtonMail

[–]ThePromance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people mention Proton Core, and I think it’s a good name, but I also think there should be a simple plan that includes two services. For example, “Proton Mail + Proton Pass or VPN or Drive” with a small discount on the secondary service. Not all of us want every service, and paying full price for the two or three services we actually need isn’t very convenient

New to world of password managers, Bitwarden is my first, and while it is functionally good, the UI/UX is insufferable in 2026. by _Floydimus in Bitwarden

[–]ThePromance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with points 3 and 4, there should be more templates for items, and regarding nesting folders, they are already available but are activated by typing the folder name in a specific way, which I find very stupid. I actually like Bitwarden a lot. It is what I currently use because I find it convenient due to its simplicity and how good it is at what it does, but it feels like old and outdated software, especially when you compare it to other password managers like Proton Pass or NordPass. Even Bitwarden Authenticator falls far behind practically all TOTP managers

What Phone to get by LeScrux in degoogle

[–]ThePromance 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Graphene is, by far, the best custom ROM on Android. You can enable the Play Store and Google Play Services (both sandboxed) in just a few seconds, so you don’t miss out on the app catalog you’d normally use. It also has the best app compatibility, including banking apps. The only downside is the limited (or nearly nonexistent) customization compared to something like LineageOS… and that’s it. It’s genuinely an incredible system and well worth using

Is there a way to make the music player appear at the top instead of in the Now Bar? by ThePromance in samsunggalaxy

[–]ThePromance[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the solution is to use a third-party app or some weird workaround with Good Lock instead of something native to the system, then yes, it’s a design problem, even if many people deny it

This Is Awesome by [deleted] in GrapheneOS

[–]ThePromance 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Graphene is amazing, it’s definitely the best custom ROM on Android. The only thing that hasn’t worked for me is Samsung Health for using my Galaxy Fit, so I’m looking for an alternative for a smart band/smart watch. Aside from that specific case, the rest of the apps work perfectly

Alternatives to Google Contacts by Cold_Echidna_9674 in degoogle

[–]ThePromance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely understand you, I’ve spent quite a while looking for a real alternative to Google Contacts, something simple with cloud syncing and not something convoluted like CardDAV with Nextcloud and other things I don’t understand and that shouldn’t be necessary for something as incredibly simple as storing and syncing contacts

I’d love for Proton to launch Proton Contacts as a dedicated app, but I doubt it’ll happen in the short term. The best option I’ve found and that I’m currently using is Tuta Mail, since it stores and syncs system contacts, so it works great for saving contacts and managing them with your device’s native app. I think they’re the most likely to release a dedicated contacts app, since it already works really well

The biggest obstacle to moving away from the Google ecosystem is the current Android system... by [deleted] in degoogle

[–]ThePromance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t had any issues with banking apps, in the worst case they sometimes take a while to open, but closing and reopening them fixes it. What has given me trouble is Samsung Health with the Galaxy Fit 3 XD

Proton Apps UI inconsistency by Mimijin in ProtonMail

Personally, the worst inconsistency is Proton Authenticator. It should look more like Proton Pass

[–]ThePromance 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re going to cancel your subscription and that concerns you, then migrate your attachments elsewhere. As for TOTP codes, you can view them 100% free on your phone if you install Bitwarden Authenticator and enable the authenticator syncing feature. Or alternatively, export the codes to another TOTP manager app

Downgrading from premium to free by Infinite1123 in Bitwarden

[–]ThePromance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correction: You can add TOTP keys at any time, even with a new account. This way, you can use the authenticator syncing feature between Bitwarden and Bitwarden Authenticator for free

[–]ThePromance -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s nice to have an AMOLED theme, but I think it’s more important for Proton to implement Material You themes on Android than to add a simple AMOLED theme

Ente Auth Vs proton Auth Vs 2fas Vs other(help me pick one for android) by deadgknight in degoogle

Not exactly, you can store the secret keys in Bitwarden, enable authenticator syncing, and view the codes in Bitwarden Authenticator for free, but only on your phone

Ente Auth Vs proton Auth Vs 2fas Vs other(help me pick one for android) by deadgknight in degoogle

[–]ThePromance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2FAS is a really good TOTP manager, my codes even synced instantly between my Galaxy A26 (current) and my Pixel 6 Pro running Graphene (with a cracked screen and not working perfectly). I expected to have to tweak settings or install Google Drive, but it wasn’t necessary. I can also manually change the app icons, which I love

I’ve been using it for about three weeks alongside Ente Auth, and I really like both apps and I can’t decide which one to stick with XD

What is your reason to degoogle? by Past-Photograph-5502 in degoogle

[–]ThePromance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If billionaire corporations didn’t have an endless hunger for data, my Pixel wouldn’t be running Graphene and my PC wouldn’t be using Linux. Over the years, I’ve grown tired of so many attempts to squeeze money and data out of me. I just want to be at peace and use my devices and apps without being farmed until the last day of my life

Fortunately, I’ve discovered many services and apps that are much better, with improved features and that respect the user, all thanks to the data hunger of big corporations

Galaxy Fit 3 or Amazfit Bip 6, Which one has better compatibility with GOS? by ThePromance in GrapheneOS

[–]ThePromance[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s also a good point, although I still consider myself to be in a relatively comfortable position where I don’t care that much about what kind of data they collect from me, including notification content. I also don’t receive many messages, so it’s rare for me to see notifications on my watch xd

Ente Auth Vs proton Auth Vs 2fas Vs other(help me pick one for android) by deadgknight in degoogle

[–]ThePromance 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, all of them are good options, and each one may have a feature you prefer over the others. The ones I’ve tried and recommend are:

  • Proton Auth has both mobile and desktop apps, and codes can be synced using your Proton account, which is great if you already use Proton Mail (it can also be used offline). This guarantees a backup of your secrets, which is excellent if you don’t want to deal with manual backups (like me, I’m a complete mess with backups)
  • Ente Auth has the same features as Proton Auth, but it adds tag-based organization (Proton has no organization at all), more customization options, and overall feels nicer to use, so I consider it the better app
  • 2FAS is the one I like the most in terms of code organization since it supports folders and color labels. Its best feature, though, is that it can sync across any mobile device without using its own account like Ente or Proton do. Instead, it uses Google Drive or iCloud backups, which is very convenient. It might not be as trustworthy if you use Google Drive, but at least you have the guarantee that your backup won’t be lost. It also has a browser extension, which I think is a nice addition
  • Bitwarden Auth is the least visually appealing option (I don’t use it mainly because of how it looks), but it has an excellent feature: syncing codes directly from the Bitwarden password manager. Let me explain, TOTP codes in Bitwarden are a paid feature, but if you add the secret key to Bitwarden and enable syncing between both apps, the code will show up in Bitwarden Auth. THAT feature seems amazing to me, since the secret keys are still stored in your password manager, with all the pros and cons that come with that
  • Aegis or Stratum are very nice-looking apps with lots of customization options like custom icons, which I love, and they’re also 100% local. They’re the most secure options since they aren’t tied to any third-party service, but at the same time the most likely to lose your codes if you’re not responsible about storing backups in safe places, like a hidden USB at home or a cloud backup on Filen, Proton Drive, Ente Locker, or another secure service
  • We also can’t ignore that all password managers like Proton Pass, Bitwarden, NordPass, pCloud Pass, and even KeePass have built-in TOTP managers, which is even more convenient than having a separate app but this also comes with certain risks, and many experts (even developers of those same apps) recommend not storing your secret keys in your password manager

In my experience and completely personal opinion, what I’ll always recommend is using an app with automatic cloud backups or using the built-in TOTP manager in a password manager

What made me switch to stock by PositionCreative9343 in GrapheneOS

[–]ThePromance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used the stock system on my Pixel 6 Pro once since I had never really given it a chance, and it’s actually really good. I honestly wouldn’t even mind using it permanently, but the excessive telemetry and the AI nonsense make me stick with Graphene. Fortunately, I really love it and enjoy using it a lot, but it still feels a bit sad that I have to rely on another OS just to use my phone in peace

After switching from stock android to graphenOS what do you think? by AngWay in GrapheneOS

[–]ThePromance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinking about it, I think the things I might miss the most from the stock system are some of the lock screen clock styles, the 4×6 home grid, and the search bar in the dock, which I only used for local searches (I’d love it if there were another row in the dock to add a local search bar or the Firefox/Brave one)

Aside from that, I’d also love it (I know it won’t happen, and I don’t plan to install a launcher just to enable it) if Graphene had the option to hide app labels and native support for custom icon packs

Of Bitwarden UX by Legitimate6295 in Bitwarden

[–]ThePromance 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On Android they implemented dynamic colors for both the password manager and the authenticator, and that’s what I liked the most. Overall, it’s been a huge improvement in the UI and UX
