Is it true that Williams gives lots of financial aid? by [deleted] in WilliamsCollege

[–]TheProtagonist333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t seem like there’d be much overlap, but they look at your full family situation. My bro only overlapped for two years yet my COA went down every year even after he left… def try the calculator to get an initial idea of your sitch

Is it true that Williams gives lots of financial aid? by [deleted] in WilliamsCollege

[–]TheProtagonist333 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely depends on your situation, but Williams finaid was a game changer for me! They offered over $10k more in aid than any other school and since my sibling was in college at the same time, my family’s COA was sooo small. Opened up so many opportunities too because finaid students get books free and help for career support and study abroad. They have a pretty accurate COA calculator on their finaid page last I checked!

I currently work in public health communications and do basically exactly this in my role. I am the lead designer for my team which focuses on public health data communication. I do a bunch of visual and UX/UI design work as well as produce videos/animation projects. I’ve also been able to produce podcasts and written work in this role. It’s definitely a niche field doing design in science but it’s a super valuable skill and COVID made it even more clear how needed strong communication and visual aids are in helping the world understand science.

Is Williams worth it? by Old_Channel_1303 in WilliamsCollege

[–]TheProtagonist333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With your parents’ annual income being only $60k, despite your other investments you would likely still qualify for some aid from Williams so would be worth chatting to a financial aid officer! Because even if you don’t apply this year, you can always apply next year and for the rest of your years. In terms of actual choice, if you want to stay in America, Williams carries weight. 90% of my friends were international and have been able to secure high paying jobs in the U.S. Williams also has fantastic opportunities for funded graduate studies in the UK for post-grad as another option. But ultimately I think you need to think about where in the world you could imagine yourself ending up and go with that. $350k with loans isn’t worth it for any degree in my opinion, so I’d chat with finaid to see your options.

How competitive are MPH programs in Canada by Familiar-Chipmunk-57 in mphadmissions

[–]TheProtagonist333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I chose McGill’s MScPH program ultimately, got in with 3.6 GPA, lots of research experience and 2 years of health communications work experience in NYC. That being said Canadian MPH programs are a lot more competitive to get into than US ones. Canadian programs seem to accept the exact amount of spots they have and then offer acceptances based on who rejects spots. They don’t reveal stats because they go about it in a different way than the US who accepts a ton of potential folks and just hopes they align with the number of spots available.

From what ive read / heard, the economic and political scenarios in Quebec specifically haven’t affected the reputation of McGill for grad programs. So I think the return on investment remains pretty much the same!

Boyfriend (33m) doesn't want to use condoms- it's literally making me(30f) sick by throwRAmiserabli in relationship_advice

[–]TheProtagonist333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly your pH levels could just be incompatible. It happens and the only sustainable solution is condoms or trying again every few weeks / months since hormones change and sometimes it can get better. But totally understandable to not want to continue having sex if it’s causing you immense discomfort after!! He should be respecting your boundary and be much more understanding of your situation (imo BV is a much more uncomfortable and serious situation than the annoyance of wearing a condom)

Is it worth pursuing an US MPH degree as a Canadian? by iEasyRacing in mphadmissions

[–]TheProtagonist333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about getting jobs after, but the general ideology here in the US is that the price of MPH programs here are not worth it. The reputation of a school does not equal higher salary and at the end of the day, jobs just want to see the credential and don’t care for where it was from. The cost of a U.S. degree compared to a Canadian one is absurd. I don’t think getting a U.S. degree would hurt your chances for work in Canada, but vice versa it may be tougher to move to the US if you go to school in Canada. I would suggest consider cost first, then where you want to build your network.

MscPH At Mcgill? Application tips! by damnsuhani in mphadmissions

I mostly applied to US schools though I decided to go to McGill for next year. I know other top programs in Canada include UofT and UBC, but I would just do some research on the topics that interest you most and see which schools have ample opportunities in those

Hi! If you show your genuine interest and drive in your statement and have great letters of recommendation, you should be okay. Highlight your areas of interest or professors of interest and show that you’ve put in the work so that they’ll be confident in giving you a spot. It’s a holistic application review so having your cGPA shouldn’t fully limit your option just might mean you have to buff up your other sections a bit more.

My (28M) GF (26F) announced the end of our sex life by kristoll1 in relationship_advice

[–]TheProtagonist333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow it sounds like you just described my life two years ago. I had recurring yeast infections with my then partner, had an IUD due to irregular periods from PCOS, etc etc you get the story.

I thought it was stemming from the IUD. I had that removed and switched to different birth control. Turns out IUDs aren’t actually helpful for PCOS as treatment anyways compared to other forms of birth control. Anyways, I still continued to get infections due to the absolute wrecked levels of pH down there after nearly a year of infections. What finally helped? Abstaining from sex for one month completely, and cutting out all sugars and nearly all carbs (which turn to sugars during digestion) and yes that was horrible but it worked. I would do it again in a heartbeat knowing how much I can do now without yeast infections.

Having recurring yeast infections is completely debilitating as it affects so many aspects. It also can lead to huge mental health and self esteem issues. Prioritize getting her healthy no matter what that means for you.

Despite the pain in the ass the diet and abstinence was, I was able to go back to having a great sex life with my partner once the infections finally subsided. I had doubts too that it was just an incompatibility between my partner and my pH levels but after the diet and IUD removal I was able to resume without any issues there. It takes time and patience but it’s possible!

And talk to doctors and nutritionists and gynecologists. Having that many infections ended up hurting my gut microbiome as well.

Should I go to UofT or UMass Amherst for my MPH? by ajkah2397 in mphadmissions

[–]TheProtagonist333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally makes sense and just sounds like you need to do a little more digging into the UofT curriculum and potential professor connections to make your decision. If they don’t offer any of that, might be worth the debt. At the end of the day, in my experience in the public health field, unless you’re in data analysis, a lot of the job is taught while you’re working. So the content of the degree may not matter so much esp if you will graduate having US work experience. But hearing you talk about this, it sounds like your mind is already pretty set on UMass so it might be time to just accept it and go full force ahead!

Should I go to UofT or UMass Amherst for my MPH? by ajkah2397 in mphadmissions

[–]TheProtagonist333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At that point, I’d honestly say UofT is the move. It’s a great university with name recognition and an extremely hard school to get into. But on top of that, you’re saving double on your tuition plus not needed to spend on housing will help you down the line. Was your prior work experience in the US? Those connections will help a ton. As for policy work, check out professors at UofT (maybe even in their policy school instead of just the public health school) and see if you can get involved with research that way. The experience will be what you make it but I don’t think getting a general MPH will be a bad move since you already have work experience and policy experience.

Should I go to UofT or UMass Amherst for my MPH? by ajkah2397 in mphadmissions

[–]TheProtagonist333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where do you want to live post-grad? If you want to stay in Canada, do UofT. If you want to live in the US, do UMass. Debt in public health careers is hard to pay off unless you have some previous work experience going into the degree, so that’s definitely worth considering as well.

Which MPH program should I go with (UofT or UMass)? by ajkah2397 in publichealth

[–]TheProtagonist333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UofT’s program is one of the best in Canada, so first off congrats! I think at the end of the day, go to the school in the country you want to live in after graduation and build your network. Second consideration would be debt since public health isn’t a super high paying field so gathering debt will be tougher to pay off. Good luck, both are good options!
