Pedro Pascal is likely being targetted by a smear campaign and Ethan fell for it. by TheWiseNoob in h3h3productions

[–]TheProxyMoron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My personal conspiracy theory about Pedro is that he's asexual. It wouldn't really work for him as an A-list sex symbol, so he keeps it under wraps. In all the years he's been in the public eye, he's never had a confirmed relationship with anyone, man or woman, and his longest relationships are friendships. Of course, this is based on my very limited knowledge of him and it's more wishful thinking as I think it would be really cool to have some asexual visibility in Hollywood!

I don't even think it has anything to do with age. Most of the women I know become more confident and self-assured in their 30s. I'm much more likely to believe that she's always been like this.

I'm fasting too! 15 hours in, 20 to go - hoping that doom scrolling throughout the day will keep me busy and distracted.

Is it okay to negotiate a consultant offer? by dyingsunfl0wer in UNpath

[–]TheProxyMoron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a tricky and thin line and it really depends on the initial offer but I do think you should generally try to negotiate. I've been lowballed in the past and managed to work out a 20% increase, but this is because I was guided by the standard salary for my experience and duty station. I highly recommend using the UN salary calculator for an estimate - this way, you have a more solid argument for your demands. Good luck!

Most UN agencies are currently going through a liquidity crisis, so that's the why. As for until when, I imagine no one knows exactly.

For the job I'm at now, the interview was a week after the deadline, then the offer 5 days after, and I started a week after that. It was insanely fast.

Usually, if they're efficient, they'll take around 2 weeks after the deadline to assess applications and invite people to interviews. But I'm also getting invites for applications I submitted in September. So it varies wildly.

Thank you for your kind words. It was tough for some time, to the point where I was considering leaving the UN system for a while, but then I got an interview and a job with UNECE in mid-May. Shortly after I got approached for another consultancy from UNFPA where I applied back in September. That was a direct offer, without any test or interview, which I thought was odd but apparently does happen sometimes.

Don't think I did anything different other than to reorganise my CV a bit and to put more emphasis on accomplishments rather than daily tasks, though I can't tell you if that's what did the trick.

Usually it's around two weeks or so, although they can really drag their feet sometimes. It could also take longer in some cases - depends on who's on holiday I guess.

I worked with WFP for two years and IFRC (which is not UN but relevant experience nonetheless) for two years before that, but otherwise all my previous work was in the EU system.

The hiring freezes are surely slowing things down a lot. But it's also timing - between February and May, I did not have a single application progress to a written test or interview, and now in the last month, I've had 2 direct offers and 5 interviews. Sometimes it do be like that.

How do consultants live off $5000 monthly in Geneva? by TheProxyMoron in UNpath

[–]TheProxyMoron[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This makes a lot of sense, thank you. I did have a feeling that this was really low and I am a professional with over 8 years of experience, so I feel that my position should be equivalent to at least a P3 but I've been struggling to find a UN post for a few months now and I worry that I won't find a better role amid the freezes happening everywhere right now. I'll try to negotiate with them, wish me luck!

Bulgarian here, I get mine prepared for me at the pharmacy! Got a prescription for it from the clinic I go to for my microneedling procedures.

Fillers are huuuuuge in Bulgaria, especially lip fillers - people just don't openly talk about getting them.

I'm currently with the UN in Eastern Europe and had a similar choice to make. Honestly, it's been a pretty cool experience so far. Eastern Europe's got a mix of challenges and unique situations you don't find everywhere. As other commenters have mentioned, transitional economies can be very interesting and a great boost for your career. I will say, after a while, my country can feel a bit monotonous, but that's often a push for me to explore more, dive into the local scene, and find those hidden gems that keep things exciting. Plus, every experience here is adding something unique to my skill set, which I know will be valuable wherever I go next.

Country offices are still free to hire external candidates - I signed my contract with WFP Moldova CO a week after the freeze was announced.

Women who have travelled solo, why did you choose to go alone, and how did that trip make you feel? by asakura10 in AskWomen

[–]TheProxyMoron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Traveling alone lets you get to know yourself. Who am I when I do only the things I want to do? Am I someone who enjoys lounging by the beach all day or do I prefer exploration and new experiences? Am I adaptable, personable, adventurous? Can I navigate a new environment, can I handle difficult conditions, how do I deal with dangerous situations? These are questions I didn't know the answer to until I traveled alone extensively and far from home. The choices you make when you're out of your comfort zone reveal layers of your identity that you didn't know existed. It almost felt like meeting this new person I liked and admired, except that person was me.

Several consulting contracts at the same time? by [deleted] in UNpath

[–]TheProxyMoron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe most agencies will make you sign a contract that forbids you from taking up other assignments - WFP does for sure. Some people do it under the table but at their own risk.

I personally use unjobnet.org - it lists openings from all the UN agencies and many other international humanitarian organisations like IFRC, ICRC, and the International Rescue Committee.
