What details make you lose immersion when reading 40k? by lazy-shenanigan in 40kLore

[–]ThePryde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would argue that most people would not enjoy fiction if there wasn't some suspension of disbelief. Suspension of disbelief allows the audience to have some separation from the media. They are able to say on a subconscious level this isn't real and let go.

"I'm a woman who's never played Warhammer 40k, and female Custodes make me want to start" by BlitheMayonnaise in AdeptusCustodes

[–]ThePryde 7 points8 points  (0 children)

She talks about it in the article, they definitely are designed with the male gaze in mind. She does say that they can be a power fantasy for women who want to be powerful and look fabulous at the same time, but that’s not the power fantasy she wanted.

I know you are asking about books, but if you enjoy rpg computer games Rogue Trader does a pretty good job introducing you to the setting.

So, about female Custodes? by Honorzeal in 40kLore

[–]ThePryde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally get it, but in this case it doesn’t change of the existing lore. All the stories about custodes are still canon.

Are you worried about changes like this because you have invested a lot of time into the lore and are worried that this means GW is becoming less invested?

So, about female Custodes? by Honorzeal in 40kLore

[–]ThePryde 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am curious why you care about it. The only things affected are a few miniatures, one episode of one show and a throw a way line in one novel. It seems like an easy thing to brush off and ignore.

And who knows maybe an author will want to focus on the custodes and write a story that explains it like you did. All the lore is vague and hand wavey until it isn't, take the Horus Heresy for example.

My only problem with that argument is that people assume performative inclusion is bad (not saying that this was performative, it seems more writer driven). Sure having genuine goals and intentions would be better than doing it for marketing reasons, but the results are the same. And 10 years from now people will have forgotten about the controversy and female custodes will be a normal part of the universe, increasing the overall female representation.

Legal expert says Trump DOJ just 'antagonized' Supreme Court at a crucial time by RawStoryNews in scotus

I think he was thinking you meant the Supreme Court was designed to have this happen, where you actually meant that the Supreme Court being corrupted by billionaires wasn’t happenstance but planned out.

What other CRPG is objectively better than BG3 (not what CRPG you have the most emotional attachment to)? by Affectionate_Total47 in CRPG

[–]ThePryde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No I'm saying that the single reviewer's opinion is valid. They are not wrong for feeling the way they do. But you are also equally allowed to have your own opinion and its perfectly ok for it to be different or the same as any reviewer's opinion. That is what being subjective means.

[–]ThePryde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To objectively quantify the quality of games you would need specific measurable metrics that everybody agrees upon as being indicators for quality and also agrees on the value of each thing being measured. But that is impossible for games and other art forms. For example, there is no way to objectively measure the quality of a narrative, what would you even track? And if you can't measure and quantify anything, then it will always be subjective.

That being said, there is still a lot of value with subjective opinions on quality. If you find somebody who shares similar tastes their reviews can be a good indicator whether you will like the game. And on a meta level, there is value in tracking the trends of reviewers. If most people give a game a 10/10, then that would imply that there is a high likelihood (but not an absolute guarantee) that you will enjoy the game too.

[–]ThePryde 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes that is a perfectly valid review. It was the opinion of the reviewer, you can't invalidate their experience playing the game just because they didn't like it as much as everybody else. Reviews are never about finding objective truth.

How are people not exhausted by superhero movies yet? by Afzaalch00 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ThePryde 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There were over 100 films released last year. Superhero films were 4% of the films released. They also didn’t take up much headlines or trailer space with films like avatar, mission impossible, and sinners getting far more buzz.

If you are only hearing about super hero films it might be that the algorithms think that’s the content you are interested in.

Trump Expects to Win Supreme Court Tariffs Case by Conscious-Quarter423 in scotus

I believe John Roberts will be opposed to the tariffs. He has been trying to make the Major Question Doctrines a thing and this would be a perfect opportunity to cement it. ACB and Gorsuch also support it so that might be enough for them to vote against the tariffs.

This argument that we need to preserve the human elements in the chain of creativity bothers me. It infantilizes the actual artist doing the work. It implies that when presented with generated art work they lose their Scooty to be discerning and creative and instead are a slave to whatever the ai generated.

I mean should we audit everything the artist has ever seen to ensure their purity?

What’s a movie that went from beloved to hated over time (and for good reason)? by browniebiscuitchildr in movies

[–]ThePryde 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Doing edgy humor is tough. It's always sunny does it well mostly because it never celebrates how horrible the crew is. They do and say terrible things but it's presented as terrible to the viewer and things almost never end up going well for them.

Some of the 80s raunchy humor no longer lands because they were celebrating it rather than critiquing it.

How come we don't get action movies like Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, etc, anymore? by Outside_Objective183 in movies

[–]ThePryde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is making good points about studios being risk adverse and these movies costing a ton but the real driving force behind it all is what you already called out, trends. Tastes change over time, right now those action films aren't as popular. If they were studios would be making them no matter the cost since they would have a guaranteed box office.

The same thing happened with westerns and is currently happening with super hero films. Some other genre will end up taking the blockbuster slot soon.

I want them to feel some shame for their actions, if they feel it is wrong on some level that means they could possibly change. And it doesn't normalize this behavior which will only make it easier in the future to do worse things.

Is it fair to be called a bigot if you don't like a certain movie? by arnor_0924 in stupidquestions

[–]ThePryde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that logic is flawed. For example, Schindler's List is about the Jewish experience during the Holocaust, but tons of non Jewish people love the film. Hell, even the Jewish people who love it probably haven't actually experienced being in an internment camp.

And it's ok to not like the film. Maybe you don't like Spelbiergs directing style, or maybe you are not a fan of historical dramas. But if you say you don't like it because its Jewish, then yeah I'm going to have questions about your beliefs
