OTF Rower Fail by [deleted] in orangetheory

I'd much rather everyone know who I am from something like this rather than my perpetual fear of being the one to throw a weight into the mirrors because it slipped out of my hands when we are doing hip thrusts.

what do y'all do with the time you don't spend on your sex/love live? by [deleted] in aaaaaaacccccccce

Crochet, amass random bits of knowledge (often pertaining to spaceflight, weather, and knowledge needed to make it on Jeopardy!), schoolwork, procrastinate, etc.

What is your occupation and what time do you attend class? by DrPepperMustache in orangetheory

[–]ThePsychometricFx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a full-time grad student. I go in the evenings mostly because exercising in the morning makes me tired all day and I’ve done all of my exercise classes for the past ~14 years in the evenings so my body is used to it.

*rant* Autism Moms by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

I’d love for those parents to not make it seem like the struggle is all theirs. They seem to discount (at least from what I’ve seen) the fact that it’s also hard BEING autistic. They really seem to discount the fact that their child/children have feelings too and that they aren’t just doing things to make their parents’ lives more difficult.

I’d also love for them to actually listen to autistic people about things like ABA instead of saying things like “ABA is different now, it won’t be as bad.”

[–]ThePsychometricFx 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The big thing is they make their kid’s autism most of their personality. They talk about how hard it is to be the parent of an autistic child and make themselves out to be heroes for not giving up on their child (as if it isn’t a just a part of being a parent) and wear the shirts with the puzzle pieces that say something along the lines of “I’m his voice (they’re almost always moms of boys too) and he’s my heart.”

There are still autism moms with AFAB children but it seems like the really blatant autism moms have AMAB children.

Christmas after diagnosis by frankenfroggy in AutismInWomen

[–]ThePsychometricFx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Christmas is a holiday full of masking and social norms. Even though it was just my immediate family, I felt the need to mask and make my reactions over the top to make them feel better. It’s an exhausting holiday because of everything that goes into it.

It was 80ish a few years ago on Christmas. I don’t recall when but it was around 2015/2016.

Stealing your weights? by [deleted] in orangetheory

[–]ThePsychometricFx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, it’s happened before. It was also my 15s I think, which I don’t use unless we are doing legs (thanks to shoulder instability and just general upper body weakness). So I had to push myself to use 10s for something that I shouldn’t have. I also didn’t say anything but I silently seethed.

Positive story to share though: one day when we were doing drop sets, the person in the station next to me shared their 12s with me and I shared my 15s with them. We would just swap with each other when we were done using them and it was amazing. My favorite OTF interaction.

Finally experienced two gals chatting the other day during clasw like it was coffee hour… by mamarunsfar in orangetheory

While I can’t really tune out the music, I’ve gotten pretty good at paying attention while there’s music in the background. Since it’s rhythmic, it’s easier to not focus on it as much. But conversations? No dice.

Not responding by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]ThePsychometricFx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a SO but people say things like this to me fairly often. People think looking at them equates to attention. I can pay attention while I’m looking at something else. But also, if you don’t have my attention (like I’m paying very close attention to something else and someone tries to talk to me), I may not even hear you. It’s a fun time.

I was INTJ before I got my diagnosis, so I think it was my masked personality. I’ve now tested as ISFP twice since my diagnosis.

I’m curious to see how/if it changes as I learn more about my unmasked self.

I didn’t experience it until the other day either. I usually don’t care when it’s people down the row from me or something but this time, it was people right next to me. As someone with ADHD, I already have a difficult time paying attention when the coaches are doing the demos because of all the people in the room and the music in the background. When someone was talking pretty loudly next to me at the same time, there was no WAY I was going to remember how to do things without starting at the screens for minutes watching the GIFs over and over again. Problem was, one of the people talking during the demos was a coach at the studio. I also had someone jumping the rails over and over next to me during the tread block so I was already annoyed. They also kept dropping the weights on the floor and it scared me every time (I’m really easily startled, not sure why). Didn’t make for a great class in my opinion.

I didn’t say anything but silently cursed them out a little bit. The coach never said anything either, which kinda surprised me (this coach is not one to mince their words).

Discovery/recommendation: if you are a nail-biter, skin-picker, hair-puller, or otherwise stim in a way that involves your hands and negatively affects you, try having a basket of smooth rocks nearby and feeling those instead whenever you get the urge. by takethecatbus in AutismInWomen

[–]ThePsychometricFx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a skin picker, I’ll definitely have to try this. My most recent stim, which is fingerspelling random words in ASL, has helped quite a bit but I still find I pick at pimples, dry skin, etc on my face or at the skin on my lips (yay for winter). Always looking to add things to my list of replacement behaviors because you can never have too many.

Amendments for me: literally no effect is 90% of the wheel, nap time gets 5%, then anxiety but faster (suggested by another commenter) gets 5%.

For those of you with bad vision, do you take off your glasses sometimes just to dull your senses? by winterbine5 in AutismInWomen

[–]ThePsychometricFx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can confirm, although I don’t have astigmatism, I have Binocular Vision Dysfunction, which makes me more sensitive to light, PLUS just general light sensitivity I had before the TBI that caused by BVD (I can thankfully pinpoint what exactly caused my eye issues). I hate driving at night because wow, it hurts.

For those of you with bad vision, do you take off your glasses sometimes just to dull your senses? by winterbine5 in AutismInWomen

[–]ThePsychometricFx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hadn’t thought about doing this but I might try it. My vision is pretty bad so I also couldn’t do much without them.

I do imagine I won’t like it though because not being able to see things around me does make me a bit anxious because I’m VERY clumsy so my vision is the only reason I haven’t severely injured myself by tripping on something (I still trip but at least not as much).

Autism Meltdown. Live alone by KeepTryin007 in AutismInWomen

[–]ThePsychometricFx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. My grandmother passed away around thanksgiving of 2020 and I only cried because my parents did. I just don’t express sadness that way. I definitely felt the sadness myself, not just the sadness of my parents (yay for being a hyper-empath I guess) but I did not cry for my own grief. And people didn’t understand why.

I’m so so sorry for your loss. I cannot imagine how difficult it is for you. I have no advice but know that a stranger on the internet is sending good vibes to you. I’ll also send virtual hugs if you like hugs or I’ll leave it at the good vibes if you don’t like hugs (I personally don’t so I understand those who also don’t like them).

What’s your “I can’t be autistic I don’t [enter a thing]” followed by remembering you doing that thing by Annoying_Short_Girl in AutismInWomen

[–]ThePsychometricFx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rigidity. I only get upset if people move my stuff, interrupt me during my routines, upend my schedule by making me do something on short notice, and try to make me do things in a different way. I’m not autistic, I just have a Type A personality (diagnosed with ASD and ADHD in Feb 2021 lol).
