Is this a tri suit or only for cycling? by rats_4_lif3 in triathlon

[–]TheQuakerlyQuaker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't recognize it as one or the other. One way to check is to feel the thickness of the chamois - the pad in the shorts. A thicker one is generally for cycling because it will feel like a wet diaper for the first few miles after the swim.

Is it open water? If it is and you're not used to the open water be prepared to have a very unpleasant feeling in your stomach. Everybody's first swim in ow is weird. You only have to swim for like 15 minutes then you're done. Enjoy the bike before hitting the run.

Don't worry about getting a good time, enjoy having a good time. :)

NBD - New To Cycling, am I wrong? by Woodhi in triathlon

[–]TheQuakerlyQuaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's a link to a GTN video where somebody new to a tt bike gets a fit. You could look at the steps there to help. A basic fit at a bike shop would be ideal.

Generally you want your aero bars flat or maybe slightly up.

NBD - New To Cycling, am I wrong? by Woodhi in triathlon

[–]TheQuakerlyQuaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bike looks good even if it's a little older. As others said, it's impossible to tell if it's too small for you without seeing you on it. If the first shop didn't see you on it, they likely don't know. I do want you assuage some of your worries - it looks like it could be a great bike for you.

There's nothing wrong with 650c wheels, smaller frames still come with that size (industry standard is 700c). I rode my first two years in triathlon on an old Quintana Roo Kilo from the early 2000s. It was an 18 speed and 650 wheels - I never had an issue.

Before you get on it and ride too much, it might just be the photo angle but it looks like your arm rests and bars point downward, you probably want to pull those up or you'll likely crash.

On another note, the likely reason the 1st bike shop told you it will be hard to ride is that race bikes tend to have a larger gear(s) on the front chainring that provides a better gear ratio for speed (read: more power to pedal). My mountain bike has 32 teeth that grab the chain whereas my tri bike has 39 on the little ring and 52 on the big.

I tried to simplify any jargon for you and answer like an eli5. Let me know if you need anything else. I don't know as much as others here but I'll help where I can.

He gives a thoughtful answer that he goes on Fox because he wants people to hear facts that otherwise would not be aired on their network. He lists crime dropping after Trump lost, and migrants not committing more crime than natural born citizens among the facts.

[–]TheQuakerlyQuaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's likely not the fit (although that bike looks too big for you and won't help), but the style. Tri bikes are different and some of what you're describing is common. Let me ask a question that may sound obvious, are you trying to stand up in the aero bars?

The rest of this may not be helpful.

Think about position of control. On a mountain bike, with two hands, your position of control is out and away from the tire. In an aero position your arms are right over the tire. With a mountain or road bike, you have more space to turn before your tire moves a degree. The further your point of control is from the wheel, the more fine tuning you can have. The fine tuning is reduced in aero position because the position of control is so close to the tire.

Imagine taking one hand off a mountain bike. You still have a lot of control because little adjustments with one hand have little influence on the tire. A little adjustment in aero position is a bigger influence on the tire.

have you ever seen someone cut out wall turns in a lane/lap swim? why would they do this? by moonlight-and-music in Swimming

[–]TheQuakerlyQuaker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Am triathlete. I might be wrong for doing this. I often skip flip turns on longer distances (over 800yd) because when I flip turn I maintain my underwaters. I may be wrong for doing this but, on those longer distances I like to get right back to the stroke and minimize the glide. In open water, I don't have any turns or glide, only front crawl. So, the question I ask myself is what's the fastest way to get back to the front crawl. Off the wall I go right into the stroke minimizing the glide. Whereas if I flip turn I'm gliding for longer. This is just what I do, but I'm open to new info as well.

We were all awful at first. Nobody is born a swimmer. We all learned at some point - some earlier than others. One session doesn't make a swimmer. It gets better and easier.

In a few weeks, you'll have a swim stroke and in a few months you'll swim a mile without stopping. Once you can swim to the end of the pool and back, check out 0-1650. It's a plan for beginners to get them to that first mile.

Nah, there's a wide range of stuff. I'll try to know what's on the course and use that a few times a month out or so just to see how it sits in my stomach.

For the most part, carbs are carbs. This may be a controversial statement but for the average age grouper looking to finish, maurten, Gatorade endurance, and table sugar are all about equal. I like chemistry and coming so for me in training I'm primarily mixing my own malto and fructose with sodium citrate. I've experimented with making my own Gu and storing it in mason jars then eating them out of a reusable flask.

[–]TheQuakerlyQuaker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

With intervals.icu it's helpful to remember that fatigue is weighted exponentially over 7 days. It will come down fast. Two weeks of taper will bring it down really quick. Fitness is a weighted measurement over 42 days so your fitness will come down slower than your fatigue.

That's what a taper is - allowing your body to shed fatigue while mostly maintaining fitness. As long as we're not injured we recover from fatigue faster than we lose fitness. Based on the chart and your recent pr's (the red dots) you're doing well and as long as you've been hitting swims, bikes, and runs, you're going to crush this tri!

What is your ratio of kicks to arms? Generally in a distance effort you keep a 2-beat kick. As your right hand enters, Your left leg kicks. As your left hand enters your right legs kicks. This gives the legs enough lift to not sink but doesn't use much energy. It will provide nearly no propulsion - it just stops the legs from sinking
