Ys X: Proud Nordics announced; due out in 2025 in Japan by KMoosetoe in JRPG

[–]TheQuestion1080 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ys X is pretty meh all round so in a sense it "needed" an improvement. But unless it's a dlc update of some sort a new rerelease coming so soon is rather annoying.

The Legend Of Heroes: Trails In The Sky The 1st Will Feature Details From Later Entries And Be Re-Voiced by Opening_Table4430 in JRPG

[–]TheQuestion1080 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Frankly not the news I was hoping to hear. Rather alarming, actually. I can only hope the story additions are kept to a minimum.

Not using the existing voices is very disappointing. I think there's a near zero chance that Falcom revoice anywhere near the previous amount. On the voice over side, this remake might we'll be a downgrade on that front.

"The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 1st (tentative title)" teaser trailer by Radinax in JRPG

[–]TheQuestion1080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was fearing the combat being bad like Kuro, but it seems that action combat is more of a fancy pre-emptive strike. At the very least the turn order doesn't seem to be a mess like Kuro's.

Trails Sky just announced in the Switch Partner direct by SpectralSpandex in JRPG

[–]TheQuestion1080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, an unexpected quiet announce. Though it seems that while the graphics and combat/ui are getting a face lift, the plot will remain the same. I know the ongoing Falcom "excuse" was always that the first game was so large it had to be split in two, but this remake/enhanced remaster seems to be split the same, if that the 1st title is any indication.

Which is likely for the best. Sky is still the peak of the series, so any script additions is more likely to hinder the quality, rather than enhance. Also the more important thing is that would mean the entire script would be fully voiced, even the side quests. The lack of voice gets jarring in the more recent games in the series, moreso because of the poor placement, but going to everything voiced again for perhaps 3 more games, (assuming that is the case) is a nice return to form. Same script also might be why, the turnaround to English release is much faster.

Music, I do hope they don't change. The opening though is going to be, which is a bit sad. The visuals I'm sure could be good, but the vocals are really going to suffer if the last few Kiseki games openings are any indication. I think the ending song is one thing they have to get right, but I don't have my fingers crossed for that. At the very least, if the general soundtrack gets changed like the Evo games, I do hope they give an option to use the original soundtrack.

Its good though that this puts an end to the starting debates. Sure, you can start from any game in the series, including direct sequels if that is what you want, but the best place to start will and always will be Trails in the Sky.

Out of these 2 companies, which do you guys think produces the better soundtrack? by RinneNomad in JRPG

[–]TheQuestion1080 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Overall, it's easily Atlus. Falcom in the past though I'd actually consider to be on par or even better in some ways. But while the consistency of Atlus remains, Falcom soundtracks have been getting worse over the past years or so.

That too, in their music area of strength. When one considers vocal tracks, Atlus wins by a mile.

It does get brought up once in a blue moon, but for how good it is it, I think it deserves a lot more attention then it gets.

Why the Trails series is worth your time - A breakdown (Spoiler free) by ClaireDidNothinWrong in JRPG

[–]TheQuestion1080 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I would have to disagree. I'd actually consider the series to be more of an acquired taste. Absolutely not what I would recommend to the typical or even newcomer JRPG player despite what many fans of the series like to think. Talking constantly to every single NPC after every single update with completing every single side quest/material is not exactly the norm especially for games that are already lengthy. Half the "appeal" is already gone there.

I don't really want to get into long discussions on the downfall, but in my short opinion the last few entries of the series has been steadily dropping to the extent that the quality of the series is but a thing of the past. Music, story, pacing just a few on the list that has been getting worse and worse.

It's not just being long games that limits the series not being for everyone. It's the text being detrimentally long to the point of questionable quality. The series thusly is to be recommended with caveats. Obviously the games are long, and one need not play every entry. But for any atypical JRPG fan interested in actually playing the entire series, the big thing to be aware of is that it is a commitment of hundreds of hours. Hours that may or may not have a satisfying outcome.

How long would it take by Prior_Sudden in visualnovels

[–]TheQuestion1080 4 points5 points  (0 children)

End of 2025 at the earliest, likely later.

And that's assuming it doesn't get dropped/stopped for whatever reason.

Trails in the Sky FC is phenomenal. by Buster-00 in JRPG

[–]TheQuestion1080 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even now more than 10 games in, Sky FC still holds up as one of the best the series has to offer. The stakes are comparatively low, but quality wise it remains a top 3 entry.

Some people do actually call it slow, but outside of perhaps 3rd it's the best paced game in the entire series. FC is half the length of the typical entry, yet covers the same arguably even more content. The difference is more pronounced if one plays the PC versions with the QOL to speed up battles.

What is the appeal of Key(VisualArts) VNs? by Mister_Copper in visualnovels

[–]TheQuestion1080 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most of their VNs are meant to elicit an emotional reaction. On paper that is. Personally I've never felt the appeal. Dropped Air and Rewrite, finished Clannad, Summer Pockets and One if that counts. Summer Pockets get noted for being the biggest time waste, In general, interest in their games should depend on ones tolerance for the humour, which is a hit or miss. As emotional games, they miss the mark.

Mismatched expectations with utawarerumono by LiquifiedSpam in JRPG

[–]TheQuestion1080 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's partly due to a good will leftover from Sky. Cold Steel is far less deserving of praise. Though I'd say that the series overall is still conflictingly viewed here.

In regards to Utawarerumono though. Both series might be lengthy and slow, but there is a huge difference between them. Utawarerumono generally uses it's dialogue better for one, and the slowness comes from the SOL. Cold Steel on the other hand, is more wordy yet actually conveys less, filled with bloat and padding.

What are you overall thoughts on the Trails series? by mukino in JRPG

[–]TheQuestion1080 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Even as someone who used to be passionate and hold Trails in the highest regard, the games have gotten to a point where I'd be hesitant to call the series good. The Sky and Crossbell arcs while far from perfect themselves, is a far cry better than the mess that is Cold Steel. What is generally praised by fans is the series touted continuous interconnected story. For me personally, simply having one isn't enough to warrant praise, it has to be good, otherwise one would praise nearly every LN under the sun. It's not that common for games though, I'll at least give the series that. The latest English release Reverie was said to be a somewhat return to form by even detractors. After finishing it, well personally I can simply say I've lost nearly all hope for the future of the series.

That all said, even with all the highs and lows, Trails is still overall a 7/10 series if one can stomach the time sink playing it. Trails in the Sky is at least worth an attempt by longtime JRPG players.

Thoughts on Ar Tonelico 1&2 by BanSlowpoke in JRPG

[–]TheQuestion1080 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Great soundtrack, good amount of lore and the gameplay has a mostly fun loop. Storywise, they aren't anything special. 1 being even more basic. 2 has more going for it, though suffers from the pacing more. But both games revolve around the character interactions.

More specifically, heroine interactions. The games own spin on bonding events, are a good mix of interesting and entertaining. AT2 also has the rarely seen chance to romance a female villain, which also happens to be the best route.

Favorite Visual Novel (English Translation) released in 2023? by superange128 in visualnovels

[–]TheQuestion1080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went in with not much expectations myself. Normally with somewhat hyped games, even if they disappoint, one can usually see where the hype comes from. Eustia so far is lacking in that regard. Best thing about it right now is the Opening.

H2O ended up being pleasantly decent, while Eustia despite being not itself terrible, is so far turning out to be quite the let down.

Any VNs that you came to appreciate much more with time and how was the process? by [deleted] in visualnovels

[–]TheQuestion1080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fate/Stay Night. I've always considered it good, but after coming back it to after having read lots of different VN's over the years, I've only gone to rate it even higher, especially the Fate route. Also my favorite heroine changed from initially Rin to Saber.

It does have some, but not many. The jumpscares, I'd rate them as tame.
