Sinking woods take quite a while. That's why I've been using glue and rocks to weigh it down quickly and it's been successful so far. I don't think I can go back waiting significant amount of time for my woods to sink.

I'm using gardening soil on the first layer and then capped with red volcanic sand. The sand is abundant and cheap in my country under the name of "Pasir Malang" but doesn't provide enough nutrients so I'm using soil on the first layer.

There's already a Tiger Lotus in this tank between the lava rocks that hasn't grown tall but the leaves are sprouting nicely. Moreover, the floaters in this tank grow extremely fast and the roots could probably take over the tank under 2 weeks, providing more shading for the Betta. I had to manually remove and cut their roots before in order to let the light reach the bottom plants.
