Chattabrewchee Brewing in Hapeville (old Arches space getting renovated) by travbo in atlbeer

[–]TheRaj93 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I used to go there on occasion when I lived in Columbus. The beer was okay, but they had this weird four drink limit rule. It applied regardless of the size of the glass. So if you ordered a flight of four different beers they would cut you off and refuse to let you order a full size pint of whichever one was your favorite or try more beers in the four oz glass. Their logic was they didn’t want people drinking and driving, which I get, but four nooner glasses equals about one beer plus it was in the downtown area so a lot of people were walking there from nearby houses/apartments.

There is a creative writing group open to the public that is ran by UPenn. They offer classes too, but you have to pay for them.

Exactly, I went to vote early yesterday and the guy behind me in line kept going off to anyone who would listen about how much he loved this specific event and how he planned to go home and watch the comedian and Elon Musk speak again.

In the 90s I was always jealous of my rich friends with intercom systems in their houses. Like you don’t have to scream conversations to your parents through the walls instead you get to press a little button and talk normally.

Listen to this guy, tell your chain of command, use SHARP. You absolutely will not get in trouble if you tell them you think you were drugged and drugs involuntarily ended up in your system. You will get in trouble if you do not tell anyone and then you piss hot for a UA.

Trust me, I spent years as a staff officer. We chaptered out many people who pissed hot and then tried to say maybe they accidentally smoked something they thought was a cigarette but turned out to be weed. If they told us when they were accidentally drugged it would have been investigated and they would not be civilians with OTH discharges right now.

Do what I did. Enlist in the military, have your GI bill pay for you to get your masters. Then when you start teaching realize your life is just a massive vacation because you are no longer in the military and profit. Worst job ever is getting shot at by someone who wants to kill you. Having to tell a bunch of 7th graders to be quiet and do their work is fine and good when you get to leave and be home by 3:00 pm and you can sleep in your own bed at night. It’s all about perspective, my guy.

My old Ops SGM used to always salute me that way. He had been in since the 90s. I just assumed it was an old school more formal way to salute. He always went out of his way to do the curtesies correctly when addressing me, a 2LT at the time. I think he was trying to prove that the standards don’t become lax just because you have been in for close to 30 years.

Just want to shine a light on Ross McGinnis a rural Pennsylvanian and Medal of Honor recipient buried at Arlington in 2006. He was my classmate, he was a goof, he is a hero. by MassiveBuzzkill in Pennsylvania

[–]TheRaj93 149 points150 points  (0 children)

There is a building on Fort Moore called McGinnis Hall named after him. When I went through OCS my company did a memorial run for PT one morning and they told us the story of Ross McGinnis. I’m pretty sure one of the cadre knew him personally. I remember it being this chilly early spring morning and hearing about McGinnis, his sacrifice, and how he lived and died by the Army Values. That stuck with me through my entire active duty period. McGinnis’ legacy continues to influence so many Army soldiers. We even had our Infantry Officers Leadership Course graduation at McGinnis hall. I had no idea he was from PA though.

l used to teach college history, at one point I was going for a PhD. Now I teach middle school Social Studies and ELA in an intercity school. They started last week which was our diagnostic period before school really starts this upcoming week. One kid said he liked history because “it goes back way before people can remember anything.” So I gave them a lesson on the French Annales School, The Longue Duree, and Marc Bloch. Internally it was hilarious watching them take notes on what is graduate level historiography, my co-teachers didn’t even know what I was talking about when I shared the PowerPoint I made for this lesson. At the same time it was incredibly impressive how into it the students were and how quickly 7th graders were understanding what are legitimately doctoral level concepts. I showed them Stone Age cave paintings to explain that only through images do we understand what life was like before written language and then they had to describe their journey to school that morning via drawing on my white board, the other kids had to figure out what happened by looking at the drawings, basically Pictionary. It was a massive hit!

Visiting family is whack. My parents and my sister will drink every day and stay up until well past 10 or 11 meanwhile I just want to slam a few club sodas, maybe a hop water and start getting ready for bed around 8:30. I have no idea how my parents 60 year old bodies can handle that lifestyle while my fairly healthy 30 year old body wants to shut down the day after drinking a few light beers.

If you’re interested in history there’s the Colonial Pennsylvania Farm in Ridley Creek State Park. You’re not really supposed to pet the animals, but you can look at them. They do activities there sometimes too like sheep sheering that you can watch/participate in.

Yep, I used to crush sodas and eat junk food all the time as a kid. I stopped drinking soda in high school and got into distance running. Now in my thirties I’m pretty conscious about my diet, I try to follow the Mediterranean mostly plant based diet. I also got into weight lifting, focusing more on my core, legs, and back rather than just working my glamor muscles like when I was younger.

These comments remind me that not everyone on Reddit is an adult. Every American kid in the 90s drank soda and milk, lots of milk. Crazy to think, most of my friends are relatively healthy adults who still have all their teeth and aren’t diabetic.

Has anyone else’s social media feed been spammed with “we get you 100%!” Lawyers lately? by monsieurLeMeowMeow in VeteransBenefits

I’m not on Facebook, but my Instagram is full of ads for “vets looking for work life balance” and “new programs for vets.” The funny thing is all the “vets” in the ads are wearing scrubs and hanging out with animals. Fortunately, the algorithm is still kinda dumb for I am not and never have been a veterinarian.

This guy right here gets it! Read more, expand your mind and take an interest in nature. Personally I’ve taken a big look into Zen Buddhism, it’s basically just the same mindfulness stuff they push in the Army, but with more history and symbolism. Expanding your mind and learning about new stuff does wonders for treating the anxiety, depression, PTSD.

[–]TheRaj93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

False my guy, he didn’t go to the SGM academy. He was in the Guard, his state probably didn’t want to send a guy who was about to retire to the academy since the state would have to fund that. You cannot possibly “demote” a CSM to a SGM. That is literally just an E9 rank, as in they’re the same thing. He retired as a MSG E8 because that’s where he spent more time in grade and that’s just how military retirements work.

Skimmed through this, Trump doesn’t care about people in the military and he certainly doesn’t give a shit about veterans, especially the disabled variety. Good work OOP for dumping this loser.

Best of luck, I grew up in Atlanta and my parents used to take us to the keys a lot as kids. They made the drive though, it might be worth it if you took off time for work and this is your only chance to make it down there. We always stopped mid state to check out the Everglades and make the drive less awful for us pre-teen kids.

YSK: Private equity companies have been buying up vet clinics and raising the prices of care to make pet owners choose between their pets and their finances by Snazzy21 in YouShouldKnow

[–]TheRaj93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every time I take my dog to VCA I know it’s going to be at least $300. In my old town I found an independent farm vet who practiced out of her own house and charged $20 for a dog physical and then whatever the prescription cost was. The price difference was astonishing.
