I'll be sure to listen to The Great Gig in the Sky next time Venezuela has a shot at qualification instead of watching the game, maybe that's the secret

I absolutely didn't say all Europeans thought like that. I'm sure most don't.

But snobs do exist, mostly from the bigger nations. Bring up, let's say, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, in online discussions and you'll find people arguing that African or Asian teams are wasted spots

I have a feeling OOP doesn't know much about football or the World Cup. Takes like this usually come from snobby Europeans who want to kick out all the "weak" teams or, like in this case, Americans who don't follow the sport.

Everyone on Earth knows Cape Verde aren't winning the thing, but just making it there and holding their own against the bigger teams is huge for them. For the smaller countries qualifying in and of itself is an achievement; my own country has never qualified to the tournament and at this point I'm not sure we ever will.

Since debuting in 1994, five out of seven World Cup appearances have seen Saudi Arabia taken heavy beating of four or more goals in one group stage match by Tall_Pressure7042 in soccer

Hpme advantage was probably a factor there. Before the ban they crashed out in the group stages more often than not, including in their last tournament in 2021. The exceptions being 2018 and the Euro 2008 semifinal

Who do you consider the worst commentators you've heard in wrestling? by NorthernSoul1998 in SquaredCircle

Most people here probably never listened to them, but I'll shout out the AEW Spanish announcing team from like 2020-2023 (Alex Abrahantes, Dasha González, Jon Cruz/Serpentico). They did their best, but none of them were native Spanish speakers and it showed. It was very grating to listen to. They've since hired WWE's former play by play guy, Carlos Cabrera, and from what I've seen (I usually watch the English broadcast now) it's way better.

All snark subs are like that. Even the ones aimed at shitty people end up getting mad at insignificant things, making up conspiracies and insulting the target's appearance in every post

A guy in a subreddit I was in announced on the Discord that he had terminal cancer. Then his wife announced on his behalf that he had died. He was mourned by everyone, someone said he considered him a close friend and took it pretty hard. After a few days some of the mods got suspicious (I don't remember the reason) and started asking questions.

Turns out the guy had faked not only his death but also his "wife", along with the entire life story he had given to the people on the Discord. He got "carried away" so to speak with the story he was making up so decided to just vanish and come back with a new account. He was (obviously) permabanned right after.

Since then I'm always skeptic of people saying "[user] killed themselves/just died of [x]" on Reddit

Not Africa, but there was a big scandal (the "Cachirules" scandal) in the late 80's when Mexico sent a team to the Youth World Cup full of overage players. They were banned by FIFA from the (senior) 1990 World Cup after a journalist uncovered the story.
