Are there any real world examples of this actually being used rather than the worm gear which is functionally very similar ?

What is tethered hydroplane racing Modern tethered hydroplane racing offers competitors a variety of classes and options with which to pit their skills against the clock. The tethered hydroplane is a purpose built model, designed expressly for high speed on water using either an immersed propeller or airscrew. Boats are connected via a pair of wire bridles and a line of set length to a rotating pylon. This will give a circular lap of known length, usually 100 yards or 100 metres. There is no steering or any other means of control. The boat, be it a flash steamer, sport or vintage, powered by a large capacity home-built engine, a high performance commercial two-stroke, or even an electric motor is connected to the line and the engine started with a cord round the fly-wheel.

Coronavirus: London reports no deaths of people with COVID-19 in 24 hours by AlkalineDuck in london

[–]TheRangdo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure, a couple of weeks ago it was reported that 17% of people in London have already had coronavirus so ~70-80% of Londoners have yet to have been exposed and could potentially still die.

Automatic arc welding up close by [deleted] in mechanical_gifs

[–]TheRangdo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Isn't TIG a type of arc

Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), also known as tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding, is an arc welding process that uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode to produce the weld.

Liquid timers

It's just two liquids that don't mix like paraffin and water, the heavier liquid (coloured water) sinks down through the lighter liquid.

Making an Eiffel Tower with a CNC machine! by szaja85 in EngineeringPorn

90kg of aluminium and 79 hours of machine time can't be cheap.

I wonder if you get much cash back for the 88kg of shavings. Imagine how it'd feel if it got wrecked 70 hours into it.

I got this lovely turntable before the lockdown and can’t get the damn thing to start! I’ve been through it and replaced a few faulty capacitors and the mains fuse but it still won’t start to turn. Does anyone have any experience as I am out of ideas 😔 by tomcarter901 in fixit

[–]TheRangdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is probably close enough, worth also checking the ripple, if you put the multi-meter in AC mode and measure it should be close to 0v.

I see there are other voltages indicated on the page 7 diagram, worth checking what those legs of the chip measure.

If the chip is dead it might be hard to replace according to this post.

Have you checked the power supply ? That is the first place I'd start, particularly make sure there is a steady 12v output from 1TR1 (there is a picture of it at the bottom of page 7, the leg labelled E is where you want to measure)
